...you may be a fellow geek if...

I modded one more single before I turned in, mostly for experiment control purposes as I'm not able to tell one single from another or a single from a minirig engine by scrutinizing bfgminer's output and I wanted the results to be crystal clear. I've numbered the singles and connected them to corresponding rails on the beastly antec PSU, but it doesn't help much when trying to determine which single is running hot or cold due to the way the minirig reports and the fact that I have them all plugged into one powered hub and one nekked mobo. I've snapped off a few screenies throughout the morning to help with examining the effects of my mods:

It got cold here last night(cold for July in MI at any rate) so ambient around the bfl gear dipped below 16c with the two ACs running...which turned them into fans as they don't have settings lower than 16c. This caused all of the engines to increase their hashpower overnight. It's now right around 18c ambient around the gear and all of the engines have risen in temp slightly with the two I modded rising the least and continuing to perform above average and above spec.

My conclusion is that this is geek time well spent and we should be able to increase our hashrate by a few % just by optimizing airflow.

Cheers.

I had some time to tinker today so I stripped one of the singles down to it's bare board to get an idea what kind of water block would fit. Both swiftech and enzotech make northbridge blocks that would fit...at least in theory. Trouble is the chips on the BFLs are pretty spread out and these are really small blocks. I may go ahead and order a couple as it would only be .75BTC or so to find out. I have a pump, clamps, and hoses as I've been a watercooled computer nut for years.

(credit to xoxide.com)

When I put the single back together I cleaned the chips and sinks with alcohol and applied a dot of MX-2 paste to each chip rather than re-using the thermal pad supplied by BFL. When I powered it back up with a delta intake and exhaust fan both connected directly to the PSU(LOUD) I was greeted with temps that never climbed above 42c(19c ambient). That single is now approximately 15c cooler than the other three or the engines in the minirig. It remains to be seen if this will translate into more shares submitted, but it was a larger drop than I'd expected.

Cheers.

Edit:

For some reason I enjoy posts like this A LOT. Keep up the good work and more HW porn like this ! Smiley

Some interesting and generally calming words from conversation on the latest letstalkbitcoin episode about pirate40, SEC and bitcoin securities.

first segment is the relevant part.

Hi AngelSky. We're not an investment fund...bASIC-Mining is a mining company and I have more than enough to do without morphing us into something we're not. I don't know anything at all about coinlenders, why should we should trust them? ...the exchange they're on? If we follow this course and these proposed investments go south(just as they've done with numerous other mining concerns) there's only one person that will be blamed for the lack of foresight. We invested in ASICMiner when we had next to zero mining revenue and I wasn't managing a minirig, four singles, four GPUs, three Avalons(with a fourth on the way), and all the power and cooling requirements that go along with dissipating 6500w.

Cheers.

This is exactly why I'm still long BASIC-MINING creativex.

agreed wtb creativex calls let go of the guys ears good management is hard to find and here we have it.

As a side note regarding SEC stupidity cant you simply reincorporate abroad say in Asia and relist/transfer shares. Honestly if the American government wants to over regulate confiscate etc there are many countries that still respect personal property and the entrepreneurial spirit.
More like all countries, except the US, for better or worse, have less rules and regulations.  It's kind of ironic actually because US residents often lead the way when it comes to business innovation.  It's almost like the government there is mirroring the fear behavior that they teach their citizens.

Whilst we are discussing options though. What are the best options for bulk chip purchases. This would seem to be the the most cost effective way to vastly increase hash power. Do you have the mad skills to handle this yourself? Or would we need to bulk purchase and let a 3rd party perform the operation for us?

Do you have any thoughts on this direction?

My electronic component building skills are rusty(high school), so I wouldn't trust myself to get that done in a timely fashion. As to the chips themselves I really don't see Avalon chips as a great play at this point. I'd consider clones built around BFL chips with their significant efficiency advantage. Does anyone know of a BFL clone project?

Cheers.

There are a couple in the works.  This one seems the most promising at the moment:

Hi lunarboy. I know that some have received their batch 3 units. I have a 1300w platinum PSU and a dedicated circuit all set and waiting for our 4 module rig. Let the 1Th/s barrier fall! Cheesy

you have 1K coins to spend. Spend them on what you do best - hardware deals dont have to be huge - adding another 100GH will add to our value now.

Please no investments in any other securities. unless it is a 1-5% stake in an emerging company

First, I want to thank creativex for keeping a cool head. And I'm glad we are returning back the "normal" talk of what are we going to do with the coins.

woudlnt be bad to put on the 0.05% daily bonds of ukyo (owner of bitfunfer) and/or other half to just-dice which of course is risk that in short term can be losing investment but the longer it sits there the more likely we will make a lot of money of it.
I think you can put some (maybe 15-20%) in a not_so_risky place like coinlenders unless

Cognitive did this very thing "back in the day." They invested their excess coins with Starfish Bank (considered one of the safest places to leave your coins at the time).
Then Starfish Bank went bust along with Cognitives' and many other people's coins.

The safest place to keep bASIC-MINING's coins in with bASIC-MINING.

We're not an investment fund
I can agree with that.

I agree with this too.
