Just received a replacement MSI 470g4.   It has a new 213 bios now.   And strangely, the Powertune settings have changed

210 BIOS Powertune
TDP  85w
TDA  125w
Max  150w

212 BIOS Powertune
TDP 85w
TDA 125w
Max 150w

213 BIOS Powertune
TDP 85w
TDA 107w     <==== HERE
max 110 w    <==== HERE

Not sure what impact the 107 and 110 have...  I was able to set this new card at 1130mhz/900mv core and 1950mhz/925mv mem as my first try and it is stable there, even with those lower Powertune figures.

I took some of the 212 BIOS that have 125/150 powertunes and moved them down to 107/110w to see if it lowered my TDP at the wall.... it did not (at least on ZEC mining).   I'll give ETH+DCR dual mining a shot and see if my TDP is lower at the wall.

I have 24 of the MSI 470s and they are my favorites, I actually prefer them over the Sapphire 480/8GB variants which I have as well.

My latest batch of MSI 470s (4GB) have Samsung memory.  You didn't take the 1500 strap and copy it up and expect it to clock at 2k on Samsung memory did you?

On my MSI 470s with Samsung VRAM I copied the 1750 strap to the 2000 range and I am running them at 1150/2100 and I am getting 29.3Mh/s out of them rock stable.

hmm i  messed up then. have a powercolor 470 4 gb  red devil dragon single fan 470 with samsung mem. copied the 1500 strap up (oops) and run it at 1300/1850 for 26.5 mhs. mining eth.

gonna redo it with the 1750 strap and run the mem up to 2000 or so and see what happens.

Dont waste your time.  You wont be happy with the performance if you copy 1750 straps on a 470 4gb.... I've tried it... gives like 24mhs.  Only 1750 straps if you have 480s and overclocking like 2250+.

Samsung is a very good and optimised memory, indeed they have lower timings.
That's the reason why 1500 Straps are too tight and you need to use 1750. Someone uses 16** timings with good results either.

The current production rx 470 4gb, I specifically was able to source the lots for samsung ram, unfortunately I still ended up with a mix of Elpida and Samsung ram on the 4gb version as the date code doesn't necessarily mean it will be one type or another.  I have much fewer elpida than i do have Samsung though.

Elide aren't bad either. I prefer those than the Heriox.
I've just ordered another 470, i hope to receive a samsung!

Elide=Elpida, Heriox=Hynix.

Dude, you need a translator.

What is your BIOS name for your newer cards? Is it *****-212 ?

I got a few in Sept/Oct and they were the 210 revision and had them running all at 2000Mhz memclock.

Later bought some more with 212 revision and these also run at 2000Mhz memclock but the ASIC quality isn't as good (65%) and they need more voltage.

Now however almost half of these cards need to run at 1950mhz or they get crazy amount of incorrect shares. Both revisions. I think its because as the DAG gets larger the VRAM chips get more unstable.

Yes, these new ones were 212 revs.

What is your memory VDDCI for all of them? 1V?

All of my 210 rev cards with hynix memory can run at least 950mv and 1950mhz.  I have a couple that are stable at 900mv and 2000mhz, and a couple that are 920mv and 1980mhz.

Of these 4 new 212 rev cards, I finally ended up with...

mem 925mv/1880mhz
mem 950mv/1880mhz
mem 950mv/1870mhz
mem 950mv/1910mhz

First, I found what my maximum memory clock could be at 1.0v.    Then I started undervolting 25mv at a time until it was unstable.    So I cant run at 1.0v and get more mem clock out of them even if I wanted to, and I pay for electricity so overvolt is not an option.

How do you know what memory brand does a card have before buying it?, neither amazon or newegg advertise it i think, thanks

You don't.

With sapphire they currently use samsung.

The best way to know which memory a manufacturer is using is by reading here and seeing what people are getting, they can and will change the memory type at times such as sapphire has done.

You can also look @ gpu reviews, often they take screenshots of GPU-Z especially in the overclocking part of the review, this way you can see the memory brand  Wink

Thanks, i do have gigabyte rx480 8 gb, msi rx 480 4gb, all of them with hynix memory i think, will go for saphire. How does perform the saphire rx470 4gb (the one has only one fan)?

All sapphire 470 8G use samsung memory.

The fans are of poor quality but all my card can do -96 mv at core 1151 and memory 2100 so 29,5 MH

I have 10 rx 470 4Gb nitro+ sapphire. Some of them have bad basic quality (60%, better than 1.5% of similar GPU's) and they run at 29.5Mhash stable because they have samsung memory.
So i would say that the real problem in my GPU's is the memory, GPU's with Heriox memory are shitty and i cannot run the higher than 27.5Mhash even though they have high ASIC quality.

Well Im really happy with my MSI 470

Reason is that the fans wont make much noise and also working pretty cool
it also under volts very well so the hashing/watt performance is good
only the card cant handle 2000mhz at memory

i believe msi card rx version had slightly higher clock than saphire rx.  if you overclock your memory too high sure enough there will be problem. sammung memory good, but not high oc

have a few rx 470 nitro, not too impressed with the quality. Big difference in temps between cards and 1 had dead fans on arrival.
