I think he meant he's leaving the site too, not just Bitcoin. I doubt he'll see any of the PMs.

How much ฿? A lot can be done if significant value lost. Don't write to drive.

The top experts recovered 99% of the data off the Challenger HD after the explosion, fall the sky, and sinking to the bottom of the ocean. I can't imagine your hard drive being in worse shape than that.

Even if it isn't economical to recover it now. Just save your HD. Years from now, the best experts will be willing to recover it for a small portion.

If you have a lot in your wallet, send me hard drive, i'll take 10% and send you the rest back if I can retrive it.

Pm me.

This is very generous, and you should take him up on it. What do you have to lose?
I agree and I'll bet the wallet can be recovered, hope the OP comes back to at least see the replies.

Try the program recuva. If it still can by scanned and didn't do to much with it then you can save it. But really 100% broke then you need something more professional.

If you had more than 1 BTC, I'd invest money in a reputable data recovery company like others are suggesting. They will go as far as transplanting the platters into an identical working hard drive to recover the data, but mind you this isn't cheap. Depending on how bricked the hard drive is will influence the cost of recovery and whether or not recovering your wallet is worth it for you.

If its less than 1 BTC, you might try tricks such as the freezer method to see if you can revive the drive long enough to pull the wallet. Assuming the failure is hardware related and not partition corruption.

One word of warning, if the amount is significant, don't risk any diy methods or unreputable recovery services as they can destroy the data in the process.

What kind of noise does the drive make when it is turned on?

Even if the hard drive is physically in pieces, it isn't necessarily impossible to recover the wallet.

High end data recovery companies are very good at doing what they do, here's a presentation where some advanced techniques such as replacing the disk stack in to a new drive and replacing boards while swapping proms are described. If you are in to the thousands of dollars lost, it is something to consider.

What's wrong with you people insulting him? You truly are pathetic excuses for human beings.

This could be Bitcoiners that sell out make a good profit see price continue to rise, somewhere after anger and denial is roaming the forum full of bitter small minded sarcasm and regrets. Might be wrong of course  Grin

Like many stated here, you still have hope i strongly suggest taking it to a professional recovery service especially if it's a large amount. I worked as a Tech for a while and i've seen wonders with hard drive data recovery.
