I think not.
But it can be disappear because no more people using it anymore.
Since it decentralized and it's really free for anyone, i think no one can shut this down

I think  electricity and internet are logistics support that make it happen but some other factors like governments legal prohibition all over the world can also make it ineffective and useless. Anything becomes obsolete when it has no use.

I was just wondering, what would it take for the Bitcoin Network to be shutdown completely?
I can't think of anything to close bitcoin, which I don't think is possible. When all countries in the world ban bitcoin, bitcoin can still be traded on the Internet. Just as drugs are banned all over the world, people still buy and sell drugs.

Yes, of course. The government may shut down Bitcoin’s presence (in the same country controlled by that government) so that it becomes “basically non-existent”. The government may simply say that the mining of the Bitcoin; and/or buying/selling of the Bitcoin for the national currency; or some other services; or even the promotion of the Bitcoin or products based upon it is illegal – and punishable by a fine and/or XY months or years in prison.

I don't think it's possible. Nobody can close bitcoin. If you want to kill bitcoin, you can only shut down the Internet, but I don't think that's possible. Now we can't live without the Internet. Even if all countries in the world ban bitcoin, it can still be traded on the Internet.

The blockchain is a living thing and it would take many years to bring the network down.

To be able to finish Bitcoin you just need to remove internet and Bitcoin will no longer exist. But this will never happen because the internet is an important factor in sustaining this development. The promulgation of the ban limits Bitcoin's development without destroying it.

I think that's very unlikely to happen. Unless there will be an interruption in the power grid all over the world or the internet will be shut down. As long as we are in the digital age bitcoin will keep on functioning and keep on growing.

I do not think this is possible because it is a decentralized currency.

Well, no electricity, and no internet connection would kill BTC for sure! You wouldn't be able to make any transactions without these.
Other issue can be all the countries in the world ban BTC, but this will not restrict it's circulation, as no internet connection do!
I agree if we dont have electrixity and internet bitcoin will die because it digital coin.

Not sure.
Its possible to do it without internet. You need to spread it on memory cards.
No electricity in times of cheap solarpanels? Unbelievable!

Bitcoin face a risk by shutdown self from unpopularity of all the bad news propaganda! If no one use it, the price will falling until end and the coin is dead.

No, bitcoin can't ever be shut down because it lives on so many computers at once. Even if power was lost in the entire world, it would be back the moment the computers power back on.

Decentralized network like block chain is nearly impossible to shut down. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
Just because it is decentralized. No central authority, No central server , Bitcoin algorithm is running in thousands of computers.
If someone wants to shut it down, every computer must be shut down. Actually it is not possible.

But there is a small probability if one mining pool acquire more than 50% hash power.(Ghash got 51% of mining power recently. But they cut it down willingly)
If someone or a team has over 50% hash power  they can wage a denial-of-service attack against the entire Bitcoin network.  Undecided
Read here - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/06/after-reaching-51-network-power-bitcoin-mining-pool-says-trust-us/

Block chain is safe and secure than any technology in the world.
Don't worry it will never be shut down..  Smiley

Can the Government step in?? I guess so

The straight answer should be a big NO. A government only can make rules for a single country, but can not stop it's using and supply. Due to its high demand, people will use it in dark web are somehow they want. People who invested Millions in BTC, they don't want to be destroyed this way. So, the government is powerless in this case.

BTC or any other cryptocurrency cannot be shutdown so easily, it's worth to note that with the millenial age
electricity is just one of the utility supply, by it's Government that cannot be put off or shutdown.

If the Electricity or Power Supply shutdown all over the world, then we will be in a dark ages.

Therefore BTC cannot be shutdown.

I think bitcoin will be shutdown because there are so many popular person or famous person that are involved here and I think they will not let anyone to destroy it or shutdown it. Even if there are so many professional hacker that wanted to destroy it there still a hacker that wanted to protect it.
