Bitcoin works on the fundamental of Block chain Technology .Block chain bring transparency in the system and it can survive without BTC . Apart from the Bitcoin, there are many industries like banking, insurance, supply chain, etc, where blockchain can be implemented. If they cannot create more market for these coins then the blockchain will be a hollow block empty and void. The blockchain technology can live without cryptocurrency. The answer is quite simple. Can you survive without water. the answer is No. So it is for bitcoin. It is the transport vehicle or protocol that makes whatver we do with bitcoin possible.
Your understanding is reversed, the OP discusses whether blockchain can survive without bitcoin. So the analogy you mentioned is not quite right.
