Overfunding -
Why? For the owner: It's fun, its a way to make your coin stand out from the rest, OR use it as a wallet.
For me: I was simply curious how many coins had extra bitcoin.
How? Send any extra amount to your Casascius Bitcoin Address and it will register on the website as a coin having extra value. Example: You have a 1 BTC coin and you send 0.01 BTC to it, making the total received to be 1.01BTC. That will cause my script to flag it as Extra and it will have the + sign by it's USD value.
There's another "why": you can use a casascius as saving wallet (if you really trust Mike).
I trust Mike, but it's still a really bad idea. You can't backup your casascius coin!
Seriously, make an encrypted backup of your wallet, put it on dropbox or gmail. Then, when your house burns down including computer and casascius coins, at least you'll still have your Bitcoins!

Sir Naypalm,

Many thanks for the charts.
I have a number of September 2011 BTC's that I want to check for overfunding.
The chart shows 20, but I can only find 10 marked as 1+ in the list.

Thank you MIG, You are correct. There are 10 active extrabtc coins and 2 opened that are from the September 2011 batch. Heh, I mistyped a single variable and it was throwing off that one number.  Cheesy

Also, if you know a link to help explain the whys and hows of overfunding, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards,

MIG

The site was getting hit by spambots last year so the extra CAPTCHA was required.

Check the bottom of the page, where "BTC:" is at under the bitcoin logo. If it says BTC: 26.52, you type in 26.52
Prices are in USD. The exchange is Mtgox.

Also: It appears that the ISP for my hosting provider is having issues today, so the website may be up and down throughout the day...  Embarrassed

I'm trying to claim some coins which have been lost by the german postal service.

I can't get past the "BTC price" captcha (that's quite stupid imo). What BTC price? Which exchange, vwap, last, hi, lo, what, currency?

hey naypalm, I love the site.

would it be possible to discern the different series of the 1-BTC coins?

Yes this is possible. On the main page simply click on any denomination or status then click on which version.

I've also updated the charts page to include the Versions produced for each month as well as the yearly totals.

Thank you for the suggestion!  Grin

What about the OVERFUNDED ones?

Overfunded counts are now included on the charts page. Please note that this includes Active and Opened Casascius Bitcoins as well as the occasional oddball Unused Casascius Bitcoin.

Thanks for the question suggestion.

I have been using a 1btc coin for cold store. Not a lot. Handfull of btc but still. Smiley
