Basic model and the cheapest. I like it because it has 2 fans. one 6pin connector and 90watt in the wall. (doesn't need powered risers)  If you oc too much the card will trottle down to the maximum stable speed.
Nice..

if used for mining 7/24, the fans will likely break way before the warranty ends.
for mining, ball bearing fans are way more reliable, and I'd say required, unless you sell the cards after a handful of months.

this is the reason why i usually set them at 40% speed, which is the minimum, the other auxiliary fans will do the jobs

I find that the killer is dust and not speed - unless you go max or close to max speed which is a bad idea for 0-24h use.

I'm about to buy a bunch of replacement fans for the Gigabyte 970s as they start to get beyond repair (cleaning and oiling them has less and less effect).
My fans on my gigabyte g1 980ti fans are flying off the cards. Cheesy
Doing an rma on them. This one card may have been part of my problem with that rig.
When they test the first one...it may show bad and give me a new one. But gigabyte doesn't allow to swap for another card. If they did I would get a 1070.
But how do you oil a non bearing fan? You would think they would put an oiling hole in the darn things.

thx

Yup had this happen with old XFX cards, occasionally I pull out the fan blade that fell off to show people what happens on cards with shit fans. Gigabyte uses the same fans.

If you're wondering how to oil a sleeve bearing cryptominingblog did a article on it with easy to follow steps. Expect to spend a decent chunk of time doing it though, which is why it's just better to buy fans that work. Interesting that they still put shit fans on their cards now days, you think they would've lost more money in RMAs then they make by putting cheaper fans on their cards.
Thx   that is why I'm buying evga double ball bearings cards from now on.

my strix 1070 is on RMA for that... 15€ shipping erffgh (2.2 kg package)

and was not the dust... its nice to put 3 fans, but if one is locking the others are put at 100% and do... real noise

i think the reason is the card length... which bend a bit the card and put some pressure on the fans motors. the card was in a normal (filtered) tower

note: it was also the first time ive a fan problem in 3 years Wink

So one lemon isn't the same thing as having a bunch of data points. I have over 25 Strix 970 and 1070s and none of them have had problems yet with the exception of one. The fan was catching on the mesh wire jacket inside the fan, eventually wearing out the fan and it started wobbling. Even then, that one fan took over a year before it finally failed.

If you have to regularly 'grease' your fans, they aren't doing their job.

I've never owned any 390 strix's. I owned some 280 and 7970 strix's back when I mined with AMD, neither had fan problems.

Asus also has the most painless RMA procedure out of all of the manufacturers. I've had to deal with Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA, and XFX over the years... Hands down Asus is the best.
To be clear: On 3 out of more than 50 (giga and MSI ) nvidia cards I had fan slowing down and greased them. That was on 970G1 Gaming and 980 Gaming 4G. And they are still working, more than 5 months. On 2 (out of 2 ) ASUS STRIX 390 I had fan failed fast and RMA'd. In my country RMA for Gigabyte is same as for Asus. Only MSI is problematic. And 2 out of 4 MSI 980 Gaming 4G just died after 5 - 10 months.
and last few months:  MSI 1070GamingX 8G seems to have ball bearing fans. And Strix 1070 OC8G are workig fine for now too. Also 1070G1 Gaming8G's. Also no prob on 480 and 470's of all 3 brands.
And I was afraid of these new cards cooling.
Speking about many cards ( just part is mine :-(  ) from several miners.

STRIX 970 fans just don't fail, no matter how hard I try. If they fail I will most probably get 1070 as a replacement.

STRIX 390 is completely different story. Panic bought some last winter and still have one left. Huge size, bad cooling, bad fans, actually nothing positive to say.

RMA here is free, you have a new card that is at least as good as original in 1-2 business days.

I had few STRIX 390 with failed fan ( third one) recently, just days after put to work. And Gigabyte fans ( many nvidias ) doing good after greasing them for long time now.

I'm about to buy a bunch of replacement fans for the Gigabyte 970s as they start to get beyond repair (cleaning and oiling them has less and less effect).

That depends entirely on the fan. Some fans are made to run at or close to 100%. I've seen some video cards whose fan never goes over 50% on auto mode regardless of how hot it gets. I've also seen some where the fan maxes out at 70% and increasing it to 100% wont actually increase the RPMs at all. Which is why I never touch fan speeds anymore. I let the card do whatever it wants to as I assume the manufacturers actually know the specs of their fans.

As I've mentioned before Gigabyte fans are terrible. The small thin fans, pretty sure are sleeve bearings too. The 1070s also use the same fans and are likely to fail after about 12 months of use.

I've had some cards I've never cleaned, like Asus cards, and their fans never fail regardless of how dusty they are. All fans are not created equal and it's not a dust thing (unless your place is encrusted with cigarette smoke and cat hair). Some manufacturers willing put shit fans on their cards.

ah yes dust also play a good role in ruining your equipment, i usually clean my rig once a month with air compressor

I know Wolf is going to be selling a private miner, any of the Nvidia devs working on Zcash already or have plans for a private miner?

...here is a crowdfunding for an open-source nvidia miner.
https://forum.z.cash/t/crowdfund-for-open-sourcing-tromps-solvers-funding-cuckoo-cycle/2465

Yeah, I'm keeping tabs on the Zcash forums, but not everyone posts in there... especially developers.

Due to the reward model for the miner (all or nothing), I have a strong sneaky suspicion a lot of developers are getting discouraged and not working on it because they think someone else will. That and not wanting to spend time and receiving no effort for it. It really should be a reward model based on contributions rather then just for the fastest overall miner. Although the reward guidelines don't really specific 'fastest' being the 'best' miner, so features, reliability, and usability might play into it too.

Almost no one has 1060s dude. Most people have 1070s and 970s.

I think the gtx 1060  could be profitable in the zcash algo with a proper implementation...

That was pretty good statement , we will see where this huge hype will go...

Z-Cash is just another anon coin with some funding.

I would stick to Dash or Monero. (organic growth, No (D)Heads inteference, Free and untracable...).

I will harvest the coin. Let the Heads create another slow miner for $30 000 optimize it, deploy it, harvest and dump it.. 300 000 KWH is reserved for the z-cash

He just cannot make competitive miner now - that is all. All other is bullshit ))

You are wrong. The opensource does 160MHASH the sp-mod 198MHASH (1060 3gb) (+24%)

In other news Zcash is supposed to be the next 'big' coin, but I'm pretty sure it's going to make a plop and fizz, not necessarily because it wont have support, but rather there is so much god damn hash on Ethereum and it's already a very visible coin, it may even start out earning worse then other coins simply due to the amount of people hammering it.

There are still people who hammer Lbry when it starts earning more then 'just' Ethereum (not counting duel mining), basically always pushing it lower then Ethereum.
