You get it wrong IMO, he does not mean to say that he wont get free spins by playing normally.
He said that he wont be able to buy means that he does not want to do not due to some reasons.
It can be because the price is too expensive for him or he do not want to take the risk.
Buy feature is actually a new feature on slot game, there were no slot with this feature few years back so players have to play normally and find the luck to get the free spins.
Now with the feature, players can get the free spins instantly.
I cant say it costs more than normal playing since there are always 2 possibilities.
In normal play, there is no guarantees that you'll get the free spin after losing/wagering equal amount to the feature's price.
While on other side, there is no guarantees that a buy feature will give you a good outcome or at least give what you have paid back.

It is insane to see such a huge amount of bonus purchases. It is no wonder that big-time gamblers do such things. That's that magic sentence, only if you are lucky! When you win that bonus round, and you need to be lucky to hit it sooner, before your bankroll drops hard, you really need to have luck in that bonus round! Many (I mean really many) times I was lucky to hit the bonus round, and I was really unlucky with payouts lower than 10...

Honestly there are way too many people I know that thinks that way. My spouse plays on spins with maybe 2k+ spins per period, she doesn't gamble everyday and that is good but when she does, she deposits money and keeps gambling on everyday for a very long time on the same thing. Yes, you're right. I only use mobile because I always use it and I'm not used to opening the desktop version maybe if it's really necessary, so I didn't become aware that it already exists and so I didn't notice.
