Bro, I suppose you're giggling everytime you hear the word "Stratosphere" (aka Scrotosphere) or "Stratus" (aka Scrotus), right? :-)

"Stratum" is normal word and it's root is widely used in related words (like stratosphere), so I don't see anything wrong with this. However some people suggested that they have negative connotation to such word, so I'm not so sure now.

Edit: "stratum" is even first suggestion for synonym at http://thesaurus.com/browse/layer . I don't see anything wrong here...

Anyone telling you they envision something negative from the word Stratum is either trolling you or dropped out in 5th grade...

cheers and gratz to Marcus

In my opinion, many suggestions here are intelligent and clever, but they are not easily remembered and they are terrible for marketing.

Think of the name "Kinkos."  This is an especially clever name for a store because it is highly marketable.  And, the reason it is highly marketable is because human infants have the tendency to repeat words with tight consonants, and this tendency continues as people get older.  Ever hear a baby call a pacifier a "binky?"

Look at the names of the Teletubbies.
1.)  Tinkie Winkie
2.)  Dipsey
3.)  La La
4.)  Po Ko

And, the names of the Pac-Man characters...(Stu is the oddball).

That being said, I think there are still much better names out there.

Edit:  Thought I'd also throw "Barbie" on the list.

I'm not sure if the name should have anything to do with "electrum." At first I thought it should, but this proposal could be implemented by any exit node for thin clients.

It is unavoidably related anyway by the technical task being performed, thin-client/bitcoin-server federation. Fortunately, they happen to share the same suffix, um.

It could be nice to have any other thin clients identify with Stratum in a similar manner and hat-tip to the founding idea of Electrum, that now becomes the special case of the wider family, but it is not necessary, eg. Aurum, Hum, Drum, Plum, Rum, etc.  Also related layers can easily be identified superstratum, substratum, etc.

Slush : PM coming your way Smiley Hope you have fun with your new layer, Stratum. I wonder how much overlap there might be here with the OpenTransactions client-server federation crypto-currency transaction s/ware that is already built?

I propose the name: Orichalcum    (or Orichalc if you're looking for something shorter, or Oricalc if you want it to be more about calculations :p)

Reason:

As "Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with trace amounts of copper and other metals" (From Wiki)
Orichalcum is a metal mentioned in several ancient writings, most notably the story of Atlantis as recounted in the Critias dialogue, recorded by Plato. According to Critias, orichalcum was considered second only to gold in value.

I just thought it was fitting.

marcus, "Stratum" sounds cool and I especially like the meaning of the word. It's my favourite choice so far...
Scratum
Strotum
...
+1

Not trying to be a butthead here, but those two choices are too similar to 'Scrotum'. Keep the suggestions coming for the naming of slush's project.

ripper234, although it's more centralized than bitcoin (which is pure p2p), it can be still called "decentralized", because anybody can run his own server or pick favourite server operator which he trust. Something like mailbox providers.

I know, it was just a silly joke, inspired by people misjudging Overlay as a "bad move for Bitcoin because it's centralized".

From all proposed names, I feel like Stratum is clear winner for me. I'll still wait a day, but unless somebody propose even more superior name, I'll pick "Stratum" without a public poll (you can call it 'enlightened absolutism', heh). marcus_of_augustus, can you PM me your bitcoin address?

Overlord ... because it's "centralized"

I'm guessing this won't be chosen for practical reasons (I suspect it has a disturbing psychological effect as a project name), but I like it in a twisted way.

I would use generic name for generic layer, not tied to Electrum. Rather, I would emphasize on the "thin", "light" clients the network allows to work:

Bitcoin LiteNet

(you can pronounce also as "Bitcoin Lightened").
