In Dota 2, I think I can watch even without commentators. It's because I'm trained to do so to make my watching in silence.

But it's fun to hear commentaries while watching and I'll choose that than to put my watching experience in silence. I'm doing that because of some situation when I'm watching.

They portray a huge role to hype each play, good or bad and that's connecting them with the viewers that are truly fans and passionate with the sports or esports that we watch.

Commentary is underated in sports and commentators are not giving enough recognition for the role they play in sports.

You cannot ignore their roles in any sports because they are the first you will see at the start of the events and you will likely listen to what they will say in the whole course of the events

I had this recent experience where I streamed live a recent premier league game and it had no audio, although it was expected to be an exciting game, I did not enjoy the game, not until the audio came up and i could now hear the commentary.
No one will, for me when the game or match is boring and I happen to watch it on the internet I change my tab but still listen to what the commentators are saying.

Commentators add colour and enhance our viewing experience, they are well informed about the sport and the teams in contest, and give real time updates on a live game that can even make someone new to a sport pick interest. Without commentary and sports commentators, some sporting games will be entirely very unexciting and eventually boring to watch.

That's true that is why the promoters will pick the best people who are knowledgeable in the sports you don't just pick anyone to be a commentator, the resume should be more on the sports they cover

Can you enjoy your sports viewing experience without commentary and  commentators?

I tried one but I cannot focus on the game I need commentators' input to see how the match or game is happening.

Commentators are what brings matches alive and enjoyable to play and exciting for the watchers unlike watching a game where there's no one giving commentary and it is so boring. I don't think that commentators are underrated and not recognized, I have watch somewhere where a commentators are what shown first before the match of Dota 2 and introduced before the game start. Well, there are times that I don't like the commentators in a game which he is not fit with the game that he is giving commentary which doesn't bring excitement and needed another commentator to do the job.

May we know why you end up in that conclusion?

What do you mean by commentators are not giving recognition? What are those things you really want to point here?

What kind of recognition? Should they being praised? Should they being awarded? There are lots of popular commentator on each sports. What's the problem you noticed? How come you think they are underrated?

Please explain and let's discuss.

There’s no live commentary if you watch the game on a live venue and yet many are still enjoying the whole game simply because they love the game and they understand how it works so even if there’s no commentator, you can still enjoy and have a good bet. Commentator on the other hand have an important role online, they really made a huge difference and even made the game more exciting, I don’t think they are underrated here.

Can you enjoy your sports viewing experience without commentary and  commentators?
I think it will still depend on the game. If two teams are playing good that it's almost impossible to predict if who will win then I can enjoy it even without a commentary but if the game is boring and there is a commentary, it won't still be fun to watch although it's better that they add commentary on the side as it might help a little.

Not only that commentary can add an excitement in the game but they are also informative if you don't know what is going on, in the match. I have known a couple of people behind the commentary of the game that I am watching and I always look for them. By the way it was esports game I am watching and betting on, not the actual sports games.

They play a big role in sports, but they are not that big because they can easily be replaced by qualified people. Unlike a player that is so talented, he can actually make his team wins, and that makes him so valuable.

Commentators do not affect the outcome of the game, it's only the refs and the players (team) that could affect the outcome, that's why some bettors also look at who are officiating the game to add the factor to their analysis.
No one said that it would really affect the outcome of a certain game which these commentators are just telling on whats happening on the game but we could not deny that they are adding the spice of a certain game which it is really interesting to watch if there would be comments and someone is talking behind those plays which makes more your watching to be that good to look at
and you wont really be making yourself do watch purely without any comments and some nice tone or voice talking behind on every moves.

these commentators for me are very knowledgeable, basically everything about the game, the players and all. hard to comment on something you are not familiar of. so i appreciate their role in adding colour to the game. i also sometimes think that they are also good bettors on the game they are covering as they are very knowledgeable with it. but sometimes it is ok to mute them from time to time esp if you are focusing on the game and you also know exactly what's going on. and you don't want any disturbance or of that sort.

In NBA, we often see commentators that are once upon a time also a NBA players. When I was a kid I use to watch Bulls and Phoenix Suns all the time as they were  the dominant teams that time. Those ballers today can still be seen on the tables of commentators like Charles Barkley, the reason is indeed they are pretty much knowledgeable in this sport.

Same with MMA and Boxing. The commentators are usually accompanied by boxers who can analyse the skills of the boxers telling who has the advantage much like a sports analyst.

I understand OP saying without commentary on a match the match become uninteresting looking like only picture viewing. Yes basically sound sometimes give another life to something. Like if no one is hearing sound in the whole world, this will be like grave place. The sports commentary whether football, boxing, wrestling, atletics or others they pass very good information to the listeners and that educate more and adding value to the sports and the viewer. Watching of football match is more attractive with listening to commentary

For me, commentators give a huge role at the same time they are narrating the game to the people who just want to listen at the same time it gives different energy and excitement to the listeners or the viewers themselves. When I watch e-sports games I pick a commentator so I know what's happening with the map if I didn't see the important details.

I don't request loans~
I probably won't. Commentary is a HUGE part of watching sports, well specifically for me, eSports. Idk how much it is in sports usually but just in the Dota scene where the game collects all the iconic commentator moments and puts it in-game, that already speaks volumes of how much a hype those commentators could bring into games. They also explain a LOT to the average viewer, especially those who don't know much about the game. Heck, even I who know about the game enjoy all their effort to explain something that happened.

What would be bad though is a commentator that doesn't know jack about the sports, now that's just disgusting and painful to listen to imo.

Sports commentators basically add another dimension and can get carried away and they add to the experience, this has a lot more in common with having a guided tour than doing it yourself.
and while it's hard for me to speak in terms of value, they definitely make the show more entertaining and lively, and keep you informed too, many of whom are ex-sportsmen themselves, and will have in-depth knowledge of the game. They will also know trivia about the club, the coach and the players.

I completely agree that commentators add color and enhance your viewing experience. they hype you up, they add details to the gameplay that you might have missed, etc...  that being said, there are commentators who are bad at it and ruin the game for you, especially those who are extremely biased toward the other team.

I've seen that so many times they make the other team or fighter look good in the eyes of the spectators and listeners so you have to be knowledgeable or you will be influenced by these commentators, I hate it when I see biased commentating like the Casimero - Tete fight where the commentators are very sure that Tete will beat Casimero and they keep praising Tete as a great boxer, but they got the shock of their lives when Casimero knock Tete out.

Some people with visual problems might see this very helpful since some of the visually impaired sports enthusiast and through these commentators they managed to get track what is happening in the game but not all commentators are good there are some who are biased and you will know that they are against or pros on the other team where in fact they should be neutral and only giving comments. So for me it is alright and I get used to with the commentators as long as they are not too noisy or too irritating but there's no problem with me also to watch without commentators but the OP is right, there's no much excitement on a match that doesn't have commentators.

Correct, they can help visually impaired people. Most of the commentators are noisy because they want to hype the people, they need put more energy so that it will reflect to the people listening. Maybe it is kinda irritating sometimes to hear those loud voices that will made me not to focus on the game, but we need to get used to it.

Actually sports commentator exist since the sports event broadcast was first introduced on radio so technically they exist to give live action and quick analysis on the game since most the people is listening on there radio and can't see what's going on in the game so same with person with visual impairment case. They are just still exist since it's already a tradition and fans like there joyful comments during the game. In reality, There purpose is indeed to serve as an eye to those people that can't see the actual games.

In my country way back 10 years ago, We are using radio to get an update on Manny Pacquiao match since they are allowed to broadcast real time the match in our country in free channels while all free TV channels broadcast the match 1 hour delay. This radio commentator help us to visualize the fight even though we are just listening. The sky is the limit when it come to imagination.

I wholeheartedly agree with your post. As someone who loves hearing people from the background commentating, it just feels so different whenever you watch a game without any live commentary. I remember, I watched this highlights in NBA where the announcer got disconnected briefly and watching like some seconds of the game felt so bleak.

I also remember another instance where I watched live commentaries of Dota 2 tournaments where the announcer hyped every single clash and battles. These people really bring another element to the game- they actually attract more people into the game as they bring more excitement while watching the whole series.

I don't think I can, it adds excitement to the match or the game, especially in boxing and MMA the drama and the action are not complete without these commentators, they are an integral part of the show, and they keep the audience fully excited and well informed, sometimes they are biased but they educated the audiences and listeners and keep them concentrated on the game, their analysis is very important too so you'll have an idea on how the match or game will progress.

Can you enjoy your sports viewing experience without commentary and  commentators?

In my personal experience, no. I can't actually enjoy my sports viewing experience without commentary. It keeps me engaged and interested, especially when I'm cheering for a sports team I have no interest in. Having someone talk over the action, either during or after the games, also really helps me make the connection between the game and various information like injury statuses and potential trades. If it's something I don't already know about, it's also nice to learn something new

It makes watching a game even more enjoyable to have someone help you make some sense of it all.

I actually enjoy with commentators as long as they know how to do it since there are some commentators that doesn't good and it really irritates me but most of them are good where they explain what is happening and what's the status of the game, etc. and it adds up to the entertainment and lightens up the mood sometimes.

My experience is different. I used to watch matches on mute during night time, which means I don't want to disturb others sleep. During the morning time I prefer watching matches with commentary on regional language. Even when the match is going so serious, some regional language colloquial terms gives some peace of mind than just pumping high.

Commentary play a big role and gives the better watching experience. During the covid-19 lockdown we had zero audience matches, it was really bad to watch those matches.

If you have room mates, its batter to be that way. The old folks before TV are only relying on radio commentary and its their brain that works like imagining whats happening as the commenter describes.

If I were in your shoes, I would rather be using headset to watch the sports, I don't wanna miss the crowd's cheers.  If I wanted to fully enjoy whats happening, I would turn on the BIG TV screen and volume to watch Joe Rogan's reaction every punch he sees.
