so does it basically come down to who can provide a signed message from an address posted further back in time? in the case of the recently posted address for instance.

it is a proof of ownership, if a seller can prove that he own the account, then the buyer is safe for the possible retrieval attempt

Consider this hypothetical: An account is dormant for a few months. It is hacked, the hacker posts an address, and then sells it a couple months later. The account is then recovered by the original owner, who can sign a message from a post made a year ago.

but what if the hacker, deleting posts containing addresses many years ago, and then he made a new post adress and as if it was indeed her account?

If it were me, I would only accept a signed message from an address that was posted at least 2+ months prior. Even then, it could be hacked, but at least at that length of time, the account would have been dormant so is unlikely to be recovered anyway.

While it is always recommended to use escrow for trades, most escrow agents are not going to have sufficient expertise to be able to protect you from hacked accounts. I know of at least one instance recently when an escrow accepted a signed message from an address that was posted that day which is worthless. Not surprisingly, the account turned out to be hacked.

Which escrow was that?
bitpop. At least according to what I was told. Was sold by puzzel.me

Edit: this is what was given to me for the communications for the trade. I haven't verified the authenticity of the PM's

Yes obviously. I even talked to kirjangka and he agreed.

and signing message will not cut it, because some of those were not carrying any address in their profile

A message posted in their profile is useless as there's no logs of them and anyone can change it on a whim. They need to be on an unedited post on the forum from a long time ago so people can prove they account belongs to them without a doubt.

You're right. That's what this thread is for - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/stake-your-bitcoin-address-here-996318

I guess there's still the risk of the person quoting it being an alt but it's better than nothing.
so it should be careful in buying bitcointalk account, so as not to get account the results of the hack

usually hacked account will be reported on meta section by the owner and get neg-trust ( from other members ), so the first thing you have to know is don't make a deal with newbie account and neg-trust ( except using escrow while transaction )... Smiley
So how do I know if the account is not the result of "hack"? due account hack results usually go round the old accounts that are inactive, and the owner does not know that his account has been taken of people

Thats why using escrow on dealing things is a must. You can ask your escrow to help you on check it whether it is hacked account or not because if you simply ask seller they would not even tell you. May be you can check it through meta. Its on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0
a better piece of advice would rather be that you should ask for a signed message from an address that was posted a long time ago.

well accounts market already happens but is hard to trust in them.... we should trust on hero account saying that wanna sell account... but can be the second owner that wanna scam soo send pm to 3 people and scam both...... will get banned and with pocket full..... better stay away and invest a bit time to reach high ranks here lol

this is true especially after the forum went ddos, now there is a high chance, that some hero has been hacked, and are used to gain trust or to be sold for few pennies

it is better to use escrow with anyone
DDOS doesn't leak any personal info/password. Ddos is an attempt by the hackers to try to disrupt the service to other users by flooding useless packets. The recent hack was by social engineering. Even though passwords were encrypted, it doesn't harm to ask for a signed message if the person was inactive for a long time or posting style changes.

i know it, l i said ddos, i the sense that it went down , i should have said "ddos'd"

it's is certain that many account were hacked, i see already suspicious activity, there are for example few old acccount, that were practically never used for a long time, that has returned suddently, active

and signing message will not cut it, because some of those were not carrying any address in their profile

agreed. and remember to always ask for a prove of ownership by signed message from an address on an old unedited post (preferably quoted). if they can't do this then that account is probably hacked or have been sold by the original owner before.
