A few years ago, there was a survey by a reputed institute in Crimea. More than 85% of the ethnic Russians and some 65% of the ethnic Ukrainians wanted Crimea to merge with Russia.

Among the Tatars, some 33% wanted Crimea to merge with Turkey, while some 17% wanted to merge with Russia. The remaining wanted to create a Crimean Tatar Autonomous Majlis inside Ukraine.

that was before Ukraine economy collapsed and nationalists (or Nazis, depending on your point of view) took control in Kiev.

At present if you want a guess, I would say 99% of people who live in Crimea right now would gladly abandon the ship that is Ukraine and join with anyone.  Even Turkey.  Why not.  At least in Turkey no one minds when people speak Russian, they seem to like it.

Of course Turkey may not make it into EU as quickly as Ukraine will. To get into EU faster, Turks should have built barricades in Ankara, and Istanbul, then kill a few hundred people from sniper rifles, and burn a few buildings.  After that of course EU politicians would have immediately agree that Turkey is a democratic and truly "European" country and admit them to the Union right away and give them a pile of money.

By the way, speaking of "ethnic" Russians and Ukrainians.  I really do not get this.  My grandfather had 5 brothers, three of whom were Ukrainians and the other three including him were Russians according to their passports.  How can you really figure out who is who?

I suppose by the color of the flag one is waving.  Of course carrying flag all the time it is also very inconvenient, because one's hands are occupied and it makes it difficult to punch other people.

I suppose this flaw can be easily rectified if democratic Rada will issue a law requiring everyone to wear armbands, say blue/red/white for Russians, zhovto blokitny (or may be red and black) for Ukrainians, and of course mogen david for jews if there are still any left.  Just like good old times when there was das ordnung in Ukraine.

In December 2009, when Barack Obama was already being president at the International Court in The Hague held hearings on the request of the UN General Assembly, according to international law the unilateral secession of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo from Serbia.
Speaking in the debate, the U.S. representative Harold Koh Honjo said: "The United States calls on the International Court of Justice to leave the declaration of independence of Kosovo without modification, as an expression of the will of the people of Kosovo, or to refuse to comment on the legality or declare that international law does not prohibit the department."
The representative of Germany Susan Vasum Rainer suggested judges consider the case of Kosovo, taking into account the principle of effectiveness, that is, taking into account the situation on the ground. She said that the unilateral declaration of independence is not in contradiction with international law.
The representative of Austria Helmut Tichy said: "In international law there is no provision prohibiting the adoption of the declaration of independence and separation." Tichy said that Kosovo's declaration of independence adopted the "elected representatives, who expressed will of the people of Kosovo."
And finally, a masterpiece from the British representative Daniel Bethlehem: "Serbia has made it clear that she would never accept the independence of Kosovo, and Kosovo do not want to be part of Serbia. Courts can not force the warring couples stay married. "
The court listened to the arguments. July 22, 2010 at a public meeting in the Great Hall of Justice at the Peace Palace in The Hague announced he received ten votes to four decision that Kosovo's declaration of independence did not violate the principles of international law.

People in masks, with bits on the bus came from the French-speaking province of Quebec in Toronto and made a revolution. Catherine Ashton fed them biscuits, ministers from France, Germany and Poland were the guarantors of resolving the situation. Legitimate government agreed. But revolutionaries ignored the agreement and changed the government of the country using violence. By the first act they banned the use of the English language in all spheres of life in Canada. Population revolted and the People's Gathering decided to ask a neighboring country to protect by adopting the English-speaking territories as new states. Question: what actions should take Obama, the president of the neighboring country?
Thx. Very good analogy  Wink
