If your CPU mining then you will use up allot more electricity than you will ever earn. Same goes for low end GPU's now and maybe even for high end GPU's.
But like someone else said, if the Bitcoin price increases enough, who knows?

Trying to use puddinpop's rpc miners. I've never joined a pool before--what am I missing?
EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. Replacing server/port with -url=http://example.com:8332

i am also using rpcminer... what's the difference between the 4-way and the cpuminer? i can't tell a difference in speed... does one have a certain advantage over another?

EDIT: Now you can try some new exciting feature - optional Pay-Per-Share mode is enabled in my pool. You can choose payments method for any of your workers, look at your account page for workers configuration. Current rate is 0.00002209487837767 BTC per share.

The rejects are negligible. .1% for BTCGuild and Deepbit.

Too many other good pools have fallen by the wayside because they dropped common sense business practices and tried to bend to the consumers whims. That doesn't work when most of those consumers of a service couldn't care less about anything but themselves.

Interesting, because I actually feel as if I get more shares on Deepbit PPS than BTC Guild running block erupter - which is how I tried rationalizing the 10% fee. I am going to run on each one for 24 hours to compare, although I know difficulty is always going up -- I think I'll give deepbit the advantage and run them first.
2 Hour Test (336MH/s ASIC)
Deepbit: 555 shares Hardware Errors: 14
BTC Guild: 560 shares Hardware Errors: 4
Also, a 2 hour run at a lowly 336MH/s can easily vary way more than that ... you are getting a lowly ~1% variance there
I've had 20% last for 2 hours (that of course had nothing to do with the pool, it was simply statistical random variance)
The item that DOES relate to the pool, the protocol and the device being used, is the reject %
However, you'd need to run 1000 AMUs for days to get anything that you might consider evidence of issues
... or you could just analyse the protocols and the devices, to work it out ...

The only thing I could think of that may affect HW errors beyond the usual temperature, OC, etc is work latency.
i.e. the gap between each job "might" increase or decrease HW % depending on the effect it has on the chip.
However, for a 335MH/s device, GetWork vs Stratum would not affect that.
