Sending and receiving coins is no problem at all, from anywhere to anywhere. Those transactions are easily identifiable and can be assigned uniquely to the user accounts.
The issue is about using exchange or pool addresses to receive bounties. The standard devcoind client (and probably none of the other bitcoin offsprings) as it stands today is not able to assign the "generated" bounty blocks to different accounts/addresses.

In short: you can mine anywhere and send the coins anytime to vircurex or withdraw anytime from vircurex.  Should you ever apply for a bounty, make sure you use an address that is generated on a wallet that is running on your PC.

Does this apply to someone withdrawing their coins from a pool?  AKA, I withdrew from the bitminersunion to vircurex.  Everything seems to be fine, but is there something confusing in the background making it difficult for Vircurex to know who gave my account the devcoins?

THIRD PARTY ADDRESSES SHOULD NOT BE USED AS BENEFICIARY ADDRESSES IN THE DEVCOIN SYSTEM.

Not only does it actually cause the coins generated to go to some third party who might or might not actually end up giving them to the person we are really trying to benefactor, but also apparently some problems can arise when/if the third party actually tries to figure out which of the addresses the account named "" (the default account; the account that creates new addresses for newly minted coins to be sent to) should properly belong to some other account based on the theory that different accounts in the wallet belong to different people.

So 13 hours later, I'm at 715,000 Devcoins.  This means I'm earning on average about half a million devcoins a day and could possibly be up to 3 or 4 million by the weekend.

Just one additional check to make sure I'm not getting too many coins.  I don't plan on selling right now given there are only outstanding orders for 11 million DVC for only 3.5ish BTC on vircurex.  Seems best to hold speculatively at the moment to see what the "devs" do for the new chain.

Sometimes when I load devcoin, for whatever reason, I don't download any new blocks.  Usually when I try again later it works.

Thanks for the info.  I'll have to see about running the daemon. That may fix my block downloading problem too.

There is no mining in the -qt, it is just for being a pretty client for GUI-users.


The devcoind is necessary for mining. Boost or Qt threads just would not handle mining, we had to disable mining for that reason.

The devcoind actually has the old wxwidgets stuff in it too, but we don't bother with that GUI so I do not even know if it compiles or works, it is just what came in the old bitcoin we hacked with minimum necessary hacks to make devcoind.

By minimum I mean even the names aren't changed, you make -f makefile.platform bitcoind then strip it and rename it as devcoind, and its default config file and maybe even data directory also still say bitcoin I think. I use shell scripts to invoke all the coin-daemons so my shell-script passes the directory and config file names to the commandline.

Even running devcoin-qt I still passed everything on the commandline so never actually tried just setting stuff in the config file.

Config probably works though its just the there is no generate in the -qt one.

I don't know why it isn't synchronising though. I used to find first time I run it it dies of no directory yet makes the directory then second time I run it it works. I don't know though whether the percent downloaded estimator even works, maybe it just stays at 0% until it gets to 100%, no idea really. I always already had blockchain from using the daemon when I ran the -qt and never ran it much at all.

Does the debug.log give any clues? I wonder if somewhere among the changes to the difficulty changes and so on it might have ended up leaving initial downloads thinking dofficulty is wrong or something maybe it is piling all the blocks into the orphans pile or outright rejecting them or something.

Note, I still can't get the blockchain to start downloading.... and I've run out of ideas.

A couple more questions-- 

Devcoin-qt says it's connected to 3 peers, but the "synchronizing" has stayed at 0% now for quite some time and hasn't moved at all.  What might be happening?

Can I set gen=1 in the conf file to start generating?  Not sure how that works, but I tried creating a devcoin.conf file and it didn't seem to change anything.

I've been watching devcoin for a while, and I finally decided to try installing it. Here's the blow-by-blow:

Installing Devcoin-qt on Ubuntu 11.10

1. Went to http://sourceforge.net/projects/galacticmilieu/files/
2. Downloaded devcoin-qt-24-Nov-2011.tgz and unpacked it
3. Opened a terminal window and went to the devcoin-qt directory
4. ran qmake, then make
5. Needed the cURL package, ran sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev
6. ran make again
7. ran the compiled devcoin-qt

Anyone else who compiles this will probably need some other packages. Since I have compiled Bitcoin on this system I may have already had some packages that devcoin requires.

First thing I noticed is that it uses a bitcoin "B" icon.  Should that not change to avoid confusion?

Because DeVCoin gives out 50,000 coins per block as compared to BiTCoin's 50, it also has 1000 times as much transaction fee. So the amount over 5000 you see in the award to the miner is quite possibly largely composed of transaction fees.

(Largely of the ones it considers mandatory. The trivial amounts also there might be voluntary ("donationed" as it were) transaction fees. Obviosly all over the 5000 ought to be composed entirely of "transaction fees" technically.)

How much of DVC (from whole 50 000) per block is for miners? Isn't it 5000 DVC? I'm asking because i just found on pool.devcoin.org on stats page following data:

i have reviewed the csv files of the devcoin daemon and there are no addresses in them that are registered with the exchange other than one of m. in other words, all account balances are correct. the functioning of the exchange is ensured.

I am currently looking into the details. The difference between the coins that you send to the exchange and the coins that you get via bounty is, that the bounty coins show up as "generate" instead of "receive". Unfortunately the devcoind does not fill the account number when it generates a block for a known address, it leaves the account field blank

There are currently two options to solve this:
1. Devcoind sets the account property for the transaction that is generated to the account that is linked to the address in the wallet
2. extend the details of the listtransactions output to include the address

In the meanwhile I will be manually checking on this, I am double checking the devcoind CSV files and compare them against all the current generated DVC addresses in the exchange to look for overlaps.

Hey Kumala, is there a way to check and see how much Bounty we have coming or check and verify its been paid? Is there any way to do this?

Difficulty is only 79 right now, DVC luck changes with every block instead of every two weeks like Bitcoin so it can fluctuate rapidly

I could point all my miners to the pool and single handedly make the difficulty go way up in one day

the difficulty was up around 200-250 pretty steady
but then when we had this issue with the pool a lot of people stopped mining so it dropped quickly

thats why you see such a variance
