Today I knew was going to be a slow day. I kept waiting and waiting for confirmations. There were multiple times of the day where it took 2 hours to find 6 blocks according to Blockchain.

yeah my idea is close to yours. make 81 ranges -10 to +10
then use randomnumber.org to assign ranges to the entries.
if you get assigned 0 you get .2 prize if you get any other range you get .1 prize
end entries at block 1000.
since all ranges will get picked randomly you can put your name in from block 0 to block 1000.
if we don't get 81 names some ranges end up rollover.
more ideas are welcome.

I know I said it's a game of chance but still completely random may be a bit too far. I'd like to try to maintain at least the illusion of choice
.We could allow multiple picks for the same range, maybe up to five. Then the timing wouldn't matter so much but the prize might need to be split between multiple winners.
Another thing we could consider is limiting participation to Full Members or Sr. Members and up (an exception can be made for former participants).
I've only played the "Game" a couple of times and cannot see much wrong with it as it stands. We were asleep in the UK when picks opened this time but I knew that was going to be the case, could have stayed up but chose not to. For me all part of the game and I think it would be a great pity to remove choice, and let's remember that even with first pick this is already a game of chance.
So yes more slots would be fine, so long as they get filled. How about a combination of smaller slots and opening picks earlier so that early voters have less information but first choice.

I really like the idea of slowing down I was starting to get scared on first one. I really don't want to see 5-10... I like level under 5.... 2 is my favorite as I use it as best case on most of my ROI. Worst case I do a lot of numbers... but best case I normally just do 2 and if it's under I am extremely happy.
I'm afraid of Avalon and Bitmain both making gear at same time. The good thing is our overall hashrate is pretty big so it's getting harder and harder to do a huge percent jump. I wonder what it will be like in a year or even two if hashrate will be even more steady.

At this point everyone just jumps at the very start... I almost think you could do football squares instead and have a great turnout.

I was thinking about this issue a few weeks back but then it didn't look so busy yet.
Perhaps we should do an early round - maybe blocks 300 to 500 - for users who participated in the contest at least 5 times or something like that. Another option would be to give priority if you use the same spot from the previous round. Yet another option would be to charge a small amount (0.001?) for an early entry and add it to the pool. Or some combination of these.
The problem is of course that any extra rules increase the bureaucracy and this should be simple and fun. Anyone has any ideas how to make this more fair for more people in various time zones etc - please share.
One thing to remember though is that this is pretty much a lottery. We've had many cases where the winner didn't pick their favorite spot, where the diff moved a few spots within the last hours before adjustment, etc. Due to the inherently random nature of mining this is much more a game of luck than a game of skill.
