Both bitcoin and altcoin are the virtual currency. Bitcoin is bitcoin itself, but altcoin consists of many coins (for example BCH, LTC, and ETH). So according to me, altcoin is the alternative /derivative of bitcoin. Actually, it's almost the same between a gold and the other metals.
There's a huge difference between Bitcoin and Altcoin. Bitcoin is the father of all cryptocurrency which altcoins depend on. Let's Bitcoin is the currency of all the coins in the cryptocurrency space. In terms of Technology, Bitcoin is the first yet it isn't the most advanced which is why we have altcoins to make transactions better that Bitcoin is not yet good at.

Bitcoin is an evidence of Cryptocurrency and is the center of cryptocurrency, while altcoin coin stands in place of Bitcoin, secondly both have different use cases and each altcoin have their problem they intend to solve but bitcoin seems to stand the chance of answering all those problems just like USD ($) which you can use to solve every problem you can possibly think of (as in you can easily exchange it to get what ever).

in my opinion bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency or pioneer of cryptocurrency while altcoin is an alternative currency development similar to bitcoin, maybe in my opinion
