I have calculated the area and population of Novorussia based on the conflict status maps.
Some 17,500 sq.kms of land is currently under the sovereignty of either the DPR or the LNR. These regions had a combined population of 3,950,000 before the conflict started. Right now, the resident population might be somewhere around 3 to 3.5 million.
