So with this design the double scroll is left out.  Does that mean I need two PSU's, one for each board?  Or is there an adapter that would work?
The double scroll holding the two boards would only require one plug for the whole miner.

As already mentioned, 2x 6-pin PCI-e plugs for the miniplane, and 3x 6-pin PCI-e for the double-scroll. Smiley

Don't forget there are topics for cooling, psu's, etc in the drillbit forums: http://drillbitsystem.com/forum/

Look back a few pages.  The miniplane and double scroll have been switched to two PCI-E connectors now instead of ATX 24pins.  Change happened with the switch from 5v to 12v.  A nice single Power Supply that's ready for SLI GPUs with four or more PCI-E 6+2 will work nicely with the double scroll or two miniplanes (especially the very efficient Seasonic ones).
Thanks!

Hey hey.

So yes a beefy power supply can potentially run up to 3 full double scrolls. I have a Seasonic X-1250 80Plus Gold 1250W whcih used to run my GPUs. It has 8 6+2 pcie connectors + you can convert 2x4 pin molex into more. Thats my plan. You could also get smaller ones per miniplane or doublescroll if you wanted to keep them separate.

As for the BTC rise, this is most excellent, and as IAS says, if it keeps going could well push us back into profitability territory on the drillbits, which is pretty damn cool. IAS, do you think we're in for a plunge any time soon, or is it up up up? Should we sell all our belongings and buy BTC?  Roll Eyes

As for the fan thing, i can't really say what will be better, but i like the vibe of the top down thing. Spotswood case is looking cool.

Latest update on our wayward package is that it has left the states. Hooray. Almost there. Thank you everyone for being nice and decent about it. It is frustrating the hell out of me not having these things done yet, but it is a great relief to not be feeling the wrath of annoyed bitcoin punters, who as we all know can be a spikey bunch at times! ... not you guys though  Wink

Thanks

If I could pay in USD rite now I would. Its hard to come off BTC now when I wont break even in BTC. I do agree with what your saying here though this has been an awesome project that I have kept a close eye on for some time. I just wish I got in when they where still accepting paypal.
Also what I know about fans from the experience I have with HVAC, fans are more effective when pulling rather then pushing. But Im not sure that applies when its an open system since I am used to pulling through closed ducts. Although when setting up a passivise intake I always pull air through the room.
you can still pay in cash. It just has to be transmited as bitcoins to barntech. It just scares the crud out of me how high its come up and still going up.

Nice! I think that looks better anyway, like having the fans as a lid of sorts, or at least a neater looking top surface. Also gives easier access to dust filters on the fans, should people decide to install their own. Smiley

So, I imagine it would be better to blow the air down and not pull it up? I am not sure of the effect this is going to have on cooling (as opposed to blowing across the blades from the side with the back end opened.)

Barntech, is the cooling much different with the current heat sink direction or is it negligable? A bit of a concern as you mentioned cooling is going to be important with overclocking.

Congrats so far and good work in bringing it all together. You are in KNC's class (No BFL or Avalon!) LOL

ps - BTC is looking SUPER DUPER BULLISH guys. Really, I'm not gonna trade this. The buyers are in control and China is going ape shit. This is something to behold. Another "mine crash" today (hour or two ago) and I knew it was gonna just jump back up - the norm now. Even though the difficulty is up, these rigs might pay for themselves pretty quick if the price doesn't let up. I'm thinking a Mini Plane can generate 4 or so coins in a year, maybe 3. At 1600 or so for the mini plane, a BTC price of 400-500 should break us even. That is going to happen before April imo.

An Atmel microcontroller is not crypto hardware, and this group buy started Aug 2nd. so there has been a lot of time to organize components.

Do a google on Atmel distributor Australia and you will see that Digikey is not the only player.

1. Maybe barntech & co didn't have the funds to secure all components at once?
2. He mentioned in his post that they ordered from Digikey because they where the only ones that could deliver the amount of microcontrollers they where after.

What a surprise... US regulations stopping us from retrieving cryptohardware.

Also,

I have an update from our manufacturers. There is going to be a delay of about 2-3 days on our boards. I am really sorry for this. It is very frustrating from my point of view as it is entirely out of my control.
Don't worry about it. Delays suck, but next week was the expected timeframe anyway. There's nothing anyone can do about it, it's just something to know for next time.

The Drilling will still proceed as planned.  Grin

There has been an issue with the Atmel processor chips which are the main brains of our boards. Apparently the United States has particularly tight regulations about parts which have encryption capabilities and makes you jump through many hoops to get them shipped. Digikey U.S. was the only company that had enough of these chips in stock for our production. I thought this had been dealt with long ago but just found out there were still issues. Basically the states don't want to be providing China with spy capabilities or something, which is of course ridiculous in this context but has meant that the processor chips for our boards have been held up delaying assembly. Rah!

O.k thanks Barntech for the details. I hope all goes well "back" to the U.S as well.

I am just glad that we will see the birth of a new product and another day or 2 sucks but it is what it is and it is. Nothing like the year or more all the BFL people had to wait.

It's not as long of a wait, but the end result is the same: Profitability is out the window.

Dammit.

Sorry for the lack of atmel chip stock. They are also used on our USB units.
