What about those next gen Avalon chips for sale now? 24BTC for 500 seems a bit high but it will likely drop soon since no one is bidding anyway. Maybe Barntech should request a free set of sample chips http://avalon-asic.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=238a9ecd2e5192e3cd3ace26d&id=66a64ac414&e=d106924af8

We already have some samples. Our Avalon next gen design is currently in prototyping.  Smiley
I won't touch Avalon with a 10 foot pole, and I would imagine a lot of other people feel the same way.

If I were you guys, I wouldn't waste my time with the 2nd gen Avalon 55nm chip.
more power cost and not efficient at all. YIFU had his time.

Any tests on mix and match with boards you already have? I'd love to have the ability to just pop them in to the set as I find my need to buy more boards as improvements are made.

Well Its end of friday, I guess no production over the weekend, I wonder how far they got.

I would also like to ask what the final hash rate was before production and is it still being worked on/tweaked ?

and keeping with that theme is the firmware upgradeable over USB, If so it makes sense to ship ASAP and let us flash any improvements later.

Big Thanks to Jes and the team, I hope there will be further Drillbit products in the future..

Hey hey.

Latest status update is the PCBs are ready and we are going in for assembly. This process will take a few days. We will then need to test the boards and get onto shipping. Still should happen this week, at least for the first bunch. I'll let you all know as each stage is happening.

The firmware is upgrade-able over USB. The boards will come with firmware, but more features will be added as we go. Don't worry, there won't be any delays due to firmware.

The final hashrate before production was about 2.5 per chip, but all adjustments that will improve this are in software land. The hardware is ready and capable. The main factor for what these things end up being capable of will be heat management. They will all be able to comfortable sit somewhere round the 2.3 GH/s per chip range but will need more special cooling if you want to run them really hard ongoingly. Those of you in cold places, with good fans etc will see the best hashrates.

As for price drop, i will be putting prices down one last time for a bit of a 'sale' as it were before we get the boards in. Once they are in, we will be looking at trying to sell some on ebay for silly prices because people will probably pay them, so if you are wanting more boards, grab them now.  Smiley

Cheers

I'm personally planning to direct my Drillbit USB at alternative SHA-256 coins when they are more profitable to mine than BTC, particularly PPC and TRC. No real need to stick solely to mining BTC, IMO.

The sha256 coins are under priced, none of them have a strong support community like say LTC does, so the strategy is simple, you mine and hold them, don't dump like you would a scrypt coin, and wait for rallies and pumps to sell softly only when you are sure the price is fetching more than the portion of BTC it represents when you mined it, that way you keep ahead. The trouble with mining BTC is you won't find a block unless you have many TH/s in your pool, by doing the alts at least you are getting something!

Yeah nice one.
It's a bit like BTC when it was about $5. The difficulty started going up and it cost more in electricity to mine than profit. (pre asic for anyone new)
Anyone who kept mining (or brought) and kept those coins are laughing now.

I remember getting 1000's of LTC when gpu mining first started and it was worth nothing.
Lets just hope some of these alt coins stick around and don't die. I think the worst thing will be if we get over saturated with all these useless little alternatives.
I don't think anything else will ever get close to BTC or LTC.

If scrypt asic mining ever happens, those will be interesting times.

Well I agree that they are a better price than KNC but they still won't break even... just too risky for me at this price/time.

Thanks, but I'll pass for now. I sincerely wish good luck to all that try though, you never know what can happen.
You don't know that it wont break even, as that is speculative on the future difficulty and the price of BTC/USD.

Very very true. If you mine but one coin with a 400 dollar miner, you are close to breaking even when BTC is 400 dollars. Yes, it is more profiable to just buy a coin but at this stage in the game, it is a hobby that will not only pay for itself, but my bet is it will REWARD you handsomely. Make sure to paper wallet that first BTC you mine!

meh... too steep @ 2BTC, I would be interested in several though @ < 1.2BTC if they ship before the end of next week.

Nothing personal, I think you have a great design and you're getting fucked by bitfury et al but with all the KNC shipping and HF close the current price won't break even.

http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/a0752023cd

I don't think there is a miner that you can break even on.

Let's take KNCMiner who is one of the very very few shipping on time.
If you pay with BTC's you can get 550Ghash/s for $4500. That is $8.18/Ghash.   (Note, their boxes so far have quite a few duds. My group buy has theirs running at 350Ghash/s and we are still waiting on an answer back from them after a week.) If you pay with CC it will run you $5,000. (Not a bad way if you are cashless to get BTC! LOL)

A Bitfury 8 chip (at 80Ghash/s I hope, haven't heard back yet from Barntech at what they are running at and how overclockable they have gotten them.) is $400.
That is $5 per Ghash. If we are only going to get 64Ghash (no overclocking at all), then it is $6.25 per Ghash.

So, if you convert Bitfury to Jupiter, and order 550Ghash/s, you get this:
If 80Ghash/s is delivered - $2750 for 550 Ghash/s. An almost 40% savings.
If 64Ghash/s is delivered - $3438 for 550 Ghash/s. An almost 25% savings.

So, my question to you is, where can you get a much better deal? Might be out there, but this is a pretty good price for a delivery in the next 2 weeks or so.

At this stage in the game, mining is not about breaking even unfortunately. But a lot of that will depend on where BTC goes.

IAS

I agree IAS, I feel no matter who we buy from, we will be likely to run at a loss.  KNC have done well, but the rush has been telling as the firmware is patchy at best.  I don`t know about you, but if I pay 4 grand plus on one product, i expect a certain quality.

Also, with each 8 chip miner board running at say 21.6 gh\s (thats a steady 2.7 per chip x Cool for a 4 board system in a mini plane, thats 86.4 gh\s.

having got my hands on a bf based miner, I`m confident that Barn et al will have the chips running at 2.7gh\s each without too much issue.

My apologies, I made a major mistake in my calculations, by 4X. (Foot in mouth) For some reason I calculated 80GHash, for 400, when it is 1600. I was thinking of what I bought and used the wrong price. Again, sorry about that.

Hey Barn,

Am I too late to get heat sinks for my order?

Thanks,

Barntech said he was including Heatsinks in everyone's order but was going to ask people to volunteer their fair share of the cost of 0.03BTC per Heatsink for their order and relying on people being good sports. Here's the post that also lists the Wallet address to send the money to:

They are more than bitfury chips on a $/Gh and a W/Gh basis, not sure why anyone would use them. Especially given Yifu's track record
BFL have proven to be more ethical than Avalon (I can't believe I just said that). So far ASICminer and KNCminer win at keeping promises, and keeping prices relevant to the current market.
