Lazy Lurker Reads Alot
Well in summer with 46 c any miner is unhappy, the heat is making my space where the miners are go up to 55 c last summer.

In winter its ofcourse pretty nice having miners heating the building Cheesy
However last couple of years it has not been very cold as we had in the paste, current winters are hardly having any temps lower then -10. temps we had in the paste where -20 to 26 and sometimes even colder
Ofcourse not as cold as our norway, sweden and finland neighbours.

But cold enough for miners to be cool enough to run fine in winter.
Summer has made me turn off mining devices often enough.

Sydney is generally pretty warm by my standards, but not too bad. But it is prone to the occasional week-long mid-high 30's degreesC (or more, if you're really unlucky) heatwave that can pop it's annoying little head up at any stage during the warmer half of the year.  In any case (or non-case, as the case may or may not be), the underlying point is that ambient temperature itself is perhaps too significant a variable to enable a blanket proclamation that something can/can't work with/without certain cooling.

Not to mention the vast variance introduced by clocking differences that many will play with (assuming that's still a feature!).

In that light, I guess I personally want the best cooling available, just to ensure that all the simple bases of my significant investment have been covered.

My fun is I need for both hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

I haven't thought to check if Bartech is having winter or summer right now or where the boards are being tested. Austrailia weather says Sydney 75*F/24C* during the day.

An excess of heat compromises any chip at some point, and heat dissipation increases performance headroom i.e. how far you can reliably overclock.  And also to some degree (as a long term form of the very same principle) there's likely to be a positive effect on longevity.  That pretty much applies to all silicon based microprocessors under heavy load.

So if you want those advantages and feel it worth the cost, then heatsinks are going to be a positive for you.  I think it's about as simple as that.

For me personally, it's less about cost (though obviously I would prefer to keep the financial impact from ballooning too much, for this auxiliary cost) - and more about what's best for the hardware and it's performance.

You've also gotta account for the fact that some boards will be run in a Russian winter and some in an Australian summer.

What's the temps with and without heatsinks?

I only ordered one board so not really exited over having to pay extra for heatsinks.

I believe the heatsinks will be optional.

Yeah but I would obviously not wanna run the board without heatsinks if it damages the chips?

Not to put a dampener on things, but I personally feel that heatsinks will be unnessesary as long as proper cooling via fans is provided.  As stated before, I beliieve that BF chips seem to like it warm, so to speak.  Having said that, if its going to prolong the life of the board as a whole then maybe worth a pop.

I seem to recall that BFSB and MBP boards do not have heat sinks at all?

Agree with this. To me the only question is what is needed to optimially run the boards? If they run fine with no heat sink go with that. If they require a basic cheap one go for that. If they need water cooling to be optimal go with that.

I'm most interested in what is needed at the max power efficiency point with no overclocking. In 6 months the difficulty will be so high that power efficiency will dominate everything (just like with GPUs where I undervoltaged / underclocked mine).

In this prototype image, there seems to be quite a bit of space between the boards.

I'm willing to go with the black ones along with the caveat others expressed in that they fit the mini-planes and double scrolls without needing engineering delays.

find out what the silvers details are. I´m looking at the pics and the seperates pop too much. My thought would get a thin one and work on a mount for the planes to pull heat a way. Get some of those screw pins like butterfly labs has to hold a fan over the planes. theres fan plugs in on the bigger plane [I think]. As long as they are strong enough for four and gentle enough for one.

Heatsinks
- fitting the boards into the minibackplane is a must.
- assuming boards are in a backplane with a case fan blowing on them, is there any demonstrable increase in hashing speed when using the two black heatsinks rather than the silver one? [I guess you don't know until you try them]
- will including the heatsinks affect the postage rates we've been using?
- how will the heatsinks be fixed to the cards? Will you be doing that?

Alright. Heatsinks.

In the end, these are the ones we're getting for the thumbs. All the thumbs will come with these.

As for the 8 boards, considering a few options. One is two have two of these guys on the back like so. These are pretty great but they are quite expensive, will come in at $17 for the pair.

Another pretty good looking option is these guys. Will be cheaper and probably pretty good, though we don't know thermal details. This will be $10

Let me know your thoughts on these. We will need to order them very soon. Will probably be easier if we just get a bunch of the same ones, so perhaps the cheaper ones will be more universally appealing, though i guess two options is an option. Can i get a show or hands?

Cheers

Barntech

What is the height on those black heatsinks? will they allow enough clearance between two boards in the miniplane? and how much clearance does the silver one allow for?

That was my first thought. In the mini plane you have very little clearance between boards. I thought Barntech said a fraction of an inch?
Anyway, the looks aren't first to me. The Fury chips work fine with heat (and perhaps even better if not running too cool - I heard that somewhere) so we probably don't need the most optimal heat sinks, just something aluminum. (Like that last one).

I am certainly willing to pay more for the better quality heat sinks.

I assume they will allow enough clearance to still use the mini plane?

Yeah crazy spam town. I've changed the setting so that new registrations require admin approval and made Lajz99 an admin to help keep things smooth over there. Should be sorted now.

Hey Barntech,

If you want to provide us the other forum and use it, gotta clean it up a bit.
i cant see a fuckn thing the whole first page is spam!

might have to resort in those silly screen captcha things where you type in the numbers/word in the picture.
Damn, whats with the spambots, why the attraction to our forums ?
Spambots attack most forums and wordpress sites etc. basically any site where you can register and post content other people can read. captcha is essential.

It wasn't just spam it was the fact that you could sit there and watch it pop up minute after minute. Its like bad morning tv. Thanks for cleaning @lajz99.
