I've heard about it but have been hesistant to try out new clients, but the fact that you mentioned
you can easily store it in a Truecrypt container makes it a winner in my eyes.
I'll give it a shot, but just wondering does it have any built-in security features like
you have to enter a password or something everytime you send btc.
I like that feature the most from the main bitcoin-qt client.

The core is still the main client, the only difference is the portable mode.
Dont forget to safe a copy of your wallet (electrum.dat). You can put it in a Truecrypt container or similar.
