The problem turned out to be a bad USB cable. I went ahead and installed Ubuntu 16.04 server as I was tired of playing with device manager.

All three cards are now chugging along at ~470 sols/s.

Anyway know how to tweak the cards under linux ala MSI Afterburner?

I've been using AMD rigs for a while, and I thought I'd try my hand with some CUDA boards.

I have a rig with Windows 10x64, 378.66 drivers, and three Geforce 1080 boards. For some reasons, Windows keeps shutting down one of the boards. If I click on it and have it find the drivers, it install older drivers. All three boards do work then however with the older driver.

When I run EWBF, the hashrate starts out around what I would expect and then quickly decays.

My questions:
1. Are the 378.66 drivers required? If so, any clues on why one of the boards doesn't like it?
2. Why the decaying hashrate? I've not mucked with any settings yet. These are stock.
3. Are the hash rates from Linux comparable to Windows? I'm much more comfortable with Unix.

NOTE: I do have the BIOS set to integrated graphics chip. This I've found makes managing things much easier. The motherboard is a MSI Z97.
I would bet that if you switch the card with another that would indicate the culprit is the slot it is in.
I think that it indicates a conflict with the integrated graphic.
Tried Disabling it ?

my budget is $390. only

which is the best investment for mining?

                                      1x1070 slower more efficient 

hmmmm.  Undecided taking out the electricity cost... so 2x1060 is more likely to generate more cryptocurrency? expecially ZCash?





yeah it's better, you can get 280 with one toal 560 sol vs 450 sol for a 1070

Right but... do you have any expansion plan?

I f you do not plan to expand than go with 2x 1060
If you plan to expand and add more cards then you will thank yourself by going with efficiency. 6x 1070 for example.
But all this might will change when NVidia release a new card. Than 1080 will drop in price and will be the card of choice.
Well my choice that is.

I dont make nearly close on other algos, of what I make with zec.
(1070), it's doing 410-440 sol/s and sipping the max amount of juice, even though I limited its power to 84%,
temp is 75c, mem clock +250, gpu clock + 200.

Totally agree, but today you have to look at others algos like lbry, skein, and such to make an opinion because Zcash is diving

3x 1060 GTX 6GB Gigabyte extreme gaming - @ 270-280sol/s on 92w - power 52%, core clock +150, mem +300
3x 1070 Gainward @ 365-375sol/s on 107w - power 72%, core +200, mem +300

instead of +300 mem on the 1070 try -500mhz or even -1200mhz if it will handle it (mine does) gives more power to the core which will bring your hashrate up for the same power usage... my setting for 1070 atm is

G1 Gaming: 1070  samsung mem :       power -40 % / core (default) / mem -1200mhz / temp 91 /   =400sol's on 90wats......

but I was just messing around with afterburner, and plugging in estimates (based on max TDP of 150 watts) into whattomine.com, and I think it makes more sense watching hashrate changes, etc - if I set the power limit to 75% (100 watts I guess?) - then if I put mem up to +600, and core at +80, I can get 425-430sol/s.

Why has everyone decided that dropping mem is a good idea? Is the TDP number for the whole card or just the GPU chip and doesn't include the power consumption of the memory? If that TDP is for the whole card what is the point of choking the memory and losing all that hash-rate?

No this is not how it works, each card has different TDP slider settings and each algo takes different amount of watt. You cannot estimate watt like that. For some cards 55= TDP is the same as 70% TDP for other just based on the TDP curve. Also lowering mem for zcash does not make sense since it uses quite a lot of memory. It makes sense for example for pascal, lbry etc. that do not use the memory controller at all.

I think you are right about the mem -1200, in theory at same TPL if the mem uses less power the core should work faster at the same TPL!
I will try it tomorrow!
