Simeone has no bright future with Atletico Madrid from now on. He must also be aware of this truth now. His game plan doesn't work as good as in the past anymore. I guess the problem that Atletico has right now is the gigantic contract that they signed with Simeone. ATM definitely plays worse than they should, but just because they had a half a season of bad matches doesn't mean they should sack their manager right away. This is the same manager that took them so far both in the league and in the UCL as well, and they recently got a title as a team too, so its still a great team. What they need to do is build a good team once again, with the same manager. Teams keep the players and change the managers too frequently because its cheaper, but I think if you find a good manager, give him funds to change any player he wants with that funds, and keep the manager instead.

The age is a good reason to pay this amount of money, clubs usually prefer younger players because they can mold them according to the team's needs, this is important.
Maybe they can ask the player to gain weight, to change position etc, some older players can't change during the career or it's more difficult.

I agree that De Jong isn't a defensive midfielder, he isn't suitable to put in that position. He is better to play as a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder, he will play more effectively in this position. Sandro Tonali, Declan Rice, Rúben Neves, Bruno Guimarães, and Wilfred Ndidi can be some candidates to be a new defensive midfielder in Barcelona. FC Barcelona seem to be turning an eye to Ruben Neves as a potential replacement for Sergio Busquets who turns 35 this summer and has had a bit of a decline in performance for club and country. Frankie De Jong has somehow failed to be a natural replacement for the holding midfielder and that presents a huge hole at the center of the midfield which is a pivotal position to Barcelona's style of play.
