I believe something pretty bad happened with him...

I sadly believe the same, seeing how passionate he was about moderating the mining boards, it's very unlikely that he would leave for no reason, he has always been criticized by many members before and he probably grew a very thick skin so I don't think someone pissed him off and got him to leave, one thing to notice is that frod is from (and probably lives) in one of the countries that had a new recent pandemic wave and the positive cases have been skyrocketing there for weeks now, I hope he is safe and healthy because that's all that matters.

With that being said, I hope nobody does more digging on him, if he is well and happy to be away from the forum, leave him be.

better everyday ♥
I am one of the most active members in the section, I watch every child board in it every day even when I don't post. When frod was around the amount of spam was close to zero, we hardly had the time to report any post as he was actively removing spam around the clock, he even did a great job in arranging different topics in their appropriate child board, that task alone is a lot of work.
this compliment seems to be something he's proud of, but I'm afraid it can also lead to a sad story  Sad With a positive and responsible person as you describe, is it possible for him to quit his job without any reason? I think NO, the worst thing now is that maybe he has encountered some problem, maybe illness, accident, ... this world is really mysterious, (Or he's been taken by aliens  Cheesy). Just kidding, whatever the reason, I believe something pretty bad happened with him...

I was aware of this almost a few hours after he was removed, I only noticed this topic after ChuckBuck mentioned my name.

I am happy to see frodocooper finally demoded because he was to restrictive with editing posts from every members who posted in mining section.

While I do disagree with a few things frod used to do, I am certain that the mining board was a lot better when he was around.

Since he left, the amount of spam went up, not by a lot simply for two reasons.

1- Most spammers probably are not aware of the fact that he left.
2- He left at the bearish/no so spam friendly time.

I am pretty sure that when BTC hits new ATH and mining become very attractive again, the mining board will have to deal with a lot of spam, I report a few posts every day since he left which I didn't have to because he took care of it all.

Another thing I noticed after he left is that many topics are put in the wrong child board, the child boards can be very confusing to most new members, even to old members who are not active in the mining board, as for now, I am so glad that whoever handles our reports actually agrees to move topics to where we ask them to, although, I am pretty sure most mods won't understand why do we request moving a topic from board A to board B, it's like a general consensus that was build between the members of that section, so I do hope the mods keep moving topics to their appropriate child boards based on the community requests to keep things as neat as possible.

With that being said,I don't think we need a new mod, for now, we just need the miners' community to start utilizing the reports more and more, it's a habit we need to develop now since we didn't really have to when frod was around, i am positive the mining community will overcome this and continue to be the most anti-spam section in this forum.

Frod, despite all the arguments I had with you, you did a great job and you shall be remembered. Thank you

This is too bad to hear.  I think frodocooper was a little heavy handed with the moderation, but you could tell that he was doing a great job at keeping the section clean.  I'm sure he probably stepped down once he started receiving heavy criticism on this board as that is what most people do, and I think that's a loss to us all.

Come back frodocooper!  I'm sorry for adding to the criticism.  We need longtime members like yourself who obviously care about this place to stick around.  I would take overmoderation of my threads before letting the trolls loose like has been the policy on the rest of this forum (as long as they don't mention a Bitcoin fork).  I hope the mining section doesn't become a new home for trolls.  There are less and less places here where one can engage in productive discussion and this is another big hit to the forum.

No, not really. Mods are more like volunteers who are rewarded with BTC for doing certain tasks. Theymos doesn't send us salary sheets every month (although there is some little administrative paperwork at the beginning)
And frodocooper didn't make a post about his leaving in the Staff section, like you I learned it in this topic.
oh ho  Shocked Nice to hear this from an insider like you. So that means only when there are certain events or tasks, you get paid for it. Since covid 19 spread all over the world, there have been quite a few mysterious disappearances on this forum  Lips sealed
Do staff members get paid?
lol, no fixed salary, but rewarded for the work, that's how I can understand
Mods are labeled Staff when they post outside their own board.
I used to think that Staff and Mod are 2 different positions  Cheesy this information is really interesting  Grin

I'm not sure of the exact boundaries of their roles and there's not much information available. I believe mods are restricted to their boards, while staffs can function on various boards just like global mods, except global mods have some extra privileges such as restoring posts moved to trash can.
yup, I also think that global mod has more perks in different section than regular mod

What exactly are the roles that staff members do, that are different from those mods do?
Mods are labeled Staff when they post outside their own board.
That is not always true. If they are wearing a Copper Membership, they will be labeled as a copper member. For example, see when mitchell posts.

That does not mean I am against moderation but changing my own words, restructuring them, changing size of my images to miniature size is not cool.
I wish you all the best frodo, I hope you enjoy your retirement in Shire, and maybe some better member will jump in to replace you.

I find your lack of faith in Bitcoin disturbing.
I used to think that mods are employees of this forum and they get paid for their work, dont they?

It's probably a bit late for me to touch on this topic, but I'm a little curious, people often disappear on this forum and leave no reason behind, so even for a mod, yes Who really knows who he is and what he's been through?

Also, if nominated, why does no one choose mikeywith, he's also an excellent guy...

I also think philipma1957 would be a great candidate but he will probably decline.
Don't be so sure about that. I remember that philipma1957 was one of the members who complained in the past that some of his posts and threads were being deleted in the mining sub. If he was offered or applied to be the mod of the mining section, he might accept to show a more lenient approach and don't go straight to post deletion.

I just checked the activity in this section for the last few years and for the last year, apparently, philipma1957 candidacy is the most suitable for the position of moderator, (not to mention the quality of the content and its loyalty). Although for some reason it seems to me that even if he is offered this position, he will refuse ...

If someone wants to propose another candidate for this position, then we can arrange a vote similar to the election of a global mod, (although theymos appointed a different person anyway).

I also think philipma1957 would be a great candidate but he will probably decline. Wouldn't it be better to know who would be willing to do the job? And more so in that section, if many are miners, I don't know if what they will be paid for moderating will motivate them.

He was replying to PMs as recently as February so obviously post count means nothing but don't let that get in the way of your shitposting.

Frodocooper was last active just over a month ago--does anyone know when he was removed as a moderator?  I don't know of a way to check that.
I think no way now if no data was scrapped.

The forum's Search for members with the option Search by position (using Staff as keyword) can help if there are data scrappers do their scrapping regularly.

I am not sure there is anyone does this.

He made one post last month and the last post he made prior to that was in October 2020. My guess is that he has been similarly inactive during that time. He may have responded to some reports during that time if he was still a mod, but has probably not been particularly active as a moderator.

He might have resigned due to the lack of time, but he was probably removed due to inactivity regardless if he asked to be removed or not (the underlying root cause).

He also only made 14 posts in 2020, if that gives additional information.

In any case, since this is the internet it's not unexpected for people to come and go from a discussion forum for various reasons, even if they're a moderator on one.  I wouldn't jump to the worst case scenario (not that you're doing that, OP) for any member who takes a break or just disappears for good from a site they were active on.

Suchmoon, I'm with you as far as hoping the mining section gets a strict mod.  That section was perhaps too strictly moderated, and sometimes I felt like I was going to get my post deleted if I didn't come off as an expert (which I am most assuredly not).  Keeping a section free from garbage posts is one thing; setting a bar to posting in it that's extremely high is another, and IMO the bar was perhaps a little too high.

I wouldn't want to speculate on "why" but I do hope that someone similarly strict will be appointed in frodo's place. Despite some complaints, those boards are a pleasure to read compared to the rest of Bitcointalk and we do need at least some part of the forum to remain like that.
