** Proof Of Research Official Launch Date**

10 / 11 / 2014 : 6 PM GST;  1PM CST US

UnixTime: 1413032407

This launch will give us 9 days to work out any issues initializing our foundation, finishing the scrypt phase, giving the exchanges time to initialize the new wallet - and starting the coin exchange program by 10-20 (our one year anniversary).  On 10-20 we will be ready to go live with GRC PoR on the exchanges and start the PR phase.

Rob

PS Download instructions and config info will be available by Saturday.

You can just use the same conf file. Or is this a fresh install? What version are you using?

Yes this is a fresh install. Version 2.1.7.7. Although it seems to be syncing now. With my old conf file, after a restart. Hopefully it finishes.

Thanks

EDIT: All synced up Grin
We had a classic release a few days ago that fixed the 125,300 block problem - just click upgrade and it should be fixed.

Thanks,
Rob

Ebola is topical subject, EMC2 is considering making a public donation, we need to know if you are willing to join our campaign as a strategic partner if we carry it forward?

what is EMC2? sorry but i don't know...

have you seen this link? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=791247.new#new

gridcoin is without doubt a cause coin...

Thanks for sharing that asdlolciterquit that is the first time I've seen that.  I think there are some other coins with goals that align with Gridcoin very well.

EMC2 = Einsteinium
It is a scrypt PoW where 2% of every block goes to their foundation in perpetuity, proceeds are divided between coin maintenance/promotion and donating directly to scientific projects.  I remember when it was launched last spring, there was a lot of hype around the coin then all the anon coins and asic resistant algorithms came into vogue and people moved on.  I believe they have actually made a donation or two from the foundation but I would have to check on that.

RTMoney, thanks for that, yes most of what you said is absolutely correct.   The 2.5% collected is distributed for projects (the 2%) and for promotions (.5%), none for coin maint.

Our site highlights most of the donations made.  The absence of our coin creating developer and multiple P&D attacks has lead to many challenges.  The new development team (1 month old) is wrestling with many of those challenges.

Our mission is to advance science in any way we can, we are reaching out to the community at large and other cause coins in particular to help us to realize our mission.

Gridcoin has indicated (on website) a desire to sponsor science fairs we would love to be a co-sponsor in that regard, we could take the lead or play a supportive role, we are ready to initiate that initiative at any time.

As indicated above, we are also considering making a donation to the Ebola matter, however we need strategic partners to consider it fully as well as to carry it out if approved by a joint exploratory committee made up of reps of the various cause coins that want to consider the matter.

This is exactly the type of thing we will be able to contribute to once the GRC foundation is in place and funded.  Unfortunately the timing isn't the best as most active community members are focused on a smooth transition to our new blockchain and there isn't an official foundation in place yet to handle the  collection and dispersion of funds.  I will mention this in a post on the CCT forum to see if there is anyone who can help out.  Even if we don't currently have the resources as a community I am open to a cross post to assist in promotion of the campaign, thank you for reaching out.

Actually the supply is the same, it is just a decimal point shift.

What will be the new MAX supply of GridCoins then? (after the PoR fork)

Cheers!

After switching protocol there will be around 320kk GRC (i.e. 10 times supply of GRC-classic).
Next 9 months will follow a decaying subsidy reward schedule: http://www.gridcoin.us/guides/gridcoinpor.pdf
After our first year there will be fixed inflation around 0.3% per year to compensate nodes for doing computational research and network security. this was chosen instead of discounting for fees per transaction.

Investors had several votes to decide on these metrics and how to ensure long-term participation.
The decisions are documented here: https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/464-gridcoin-grc/

All-

Please see this draft that we will be posting in a dedicated PR thread regarding our transition to the Proof Of Research wallet around mid October (shortly before our 1 year anniversary):

http://www.gridcoin.us/guides/gridcoinpor.pdf

This guide outlines the major differences between the existing proof of work wallet and PoR wallet.

On a high level, we will be exercising the following actions over the next month (will provide details soon):

* Hard fork required in the classic wallet around Oct 1st 2014 (this ensures higher security during the retirement phase and a diminishing block reward for its last 6 month lifespan)
  for all users and exchanges.
* Release of PoR wallet around 10-10.  Mining in the PoR wallet begins.
* Exchanges stop trading GRC classic
* Exchanges start trading GRC using the PoR wallet
* Coin burning begins - extends on for 6 months
* Coins are exchanged via a dedicated foundation site for Gridcoin PoR coins (at 10* quantity)

It is a very exciting time.

We also started advertising on Bing and have had over 600 clicks into gridcoin.us.

Rob

All good news! What will be the new maximum supply of GRC after the fork/update? Capped or uncapped?

Cheers!

FR

Hi,

The new decay schedule that starts on 10-20-2014 is very aggressive.  Please see the end of this document:
http://www.gridcoin.us/guides/gridcoinpor.pdf

Cheers,
Rob

really glad to read this post, just one question: what do you mean whit Coin burning begins ?

Regarding coin burning - or coin exchange:

We are planning to launch the new Proof Of Research wallet on approx 10-15-2014 (we will be writing a summary and will give at least 10 days notice before mining begins).

Once we start mining the new wallet, a web site will be opened up for the foundation that contains the 31-32~ million GRC in escrow.
These classic coins will be converted to PoR coins by multiplying the original coins by a factor of 10.

All users will burn their old classic coins through the foundation site by sending the old coins to a dedicated vanity address.  They will receive coins in the new wallet automatically *10.

In this way all old classic coins will be destroyed and all users will end up with Proof Of Research coins.
The program will go on for approx 5 months to give everyone time to convert the coins.

Rob

this is following a steep schedule, do your calculations and take a seat early! Smiley

Please use the download blocks option, this worked for me. Synced with 49 connections now!
Thanks. Trying it now.

Edit: Update - the download is about 56% complete. Normal so far, but it has knocked out the other version of cgminer (not GRC-related) that was running in a command prompt window. I mention this in case it helps to localize when that happens.

Edit: Further update - the download crashed. I was not there to see it and only saw the unhelpful Windows message that gridcoin-qt had stopped working. On restart everything looks normal though. It is in sync, showing block 185912, 7 connections. Bottom line - the Download Blocks option seemed to fix things, albeit with some drama. Thanks again, Sparood.
