my 280x rigs are crashing but hashes @ 175 then full stop. Stable at v6 but v7 seem to use more power.
With Claymore V7 some of my GPUs have slowed with the modified bios's, some are faster, some are faster being stock.
Best is the reference R9 290 running at 230 h/s.

Yeah now for full speed you need more GPU power at least on 280x
1000mhz -> 163
1100 -> 180
1200Mhz -> near 200
Also looks like it more now about memory clock and bandwith then about latency

this is modded from a Sapphire HD 7970 3G OC w boost, Hynix AFR. It should actually work on your 280x as well.
I tried the 7950 bios on 3 of my Gigabyte cards, one saw a nice improvement, up to 90+ h/s but it fails after a few minutes. The other two only hash for about a minute before crashing. Even adjusting the clocks up/down made no real difference.

You sure you had the Hynix memory? The most I can get with my Gigabyte 7950 is 130 Sols because it crashes with any memory clock higher than 1500. I think I run it at 1000/1400.
Pretty sure. I run ethos (linux) so GPUz doesnt do me any good. Ethos reports it as Hynix. Its not the exact model you list, its a Gigabyte Twin Frozr II but I thought Id give it a try anyway. I also planned to try the same bios on my reference Sapphire 7950's but have not made it that far yet.
I think I even went as far as to drop the clocks to 1000/1250 and it still crashed.
Twin Frozr II is usually MSI, not Gigabyte. Maybe try the MSI 280X instead.

The MSI 280X bios seems to be working fine at 1000/1575 clocks pulling 82 h/s on silentarmy v5. Im sure Ill get more once its updated. I did notice that the voltage is 1.2v which is lower than stock (1.25v) but higher than I had it before. Back in the Scrypt mining days I had flashed a bios to thee cards which lowered the voltage to 0.9 or so, this dropped my over all wattage by about 50watts per card and didnt affect the hashrate at all.
I have not tried the 8950 bios yet, that I'll do this evening.

What memory does it have? Some guy sent me a XFX 280X bios and I couldn't mod it because it had HYNIX BFR memory. I can only do AFR and MFR.

I don't know technically what the difference is between the 8950 and 7950 but mine runs rock solid at 1100/1575, and peaks at 150 H/s.
However I got a few Gigabyte 7950 and those can only run at 1050/1400 since anything higher and its unstable, no idea why.

RAM cooling can make a difference for overclocking. For any new card purchases I look for the RAM to be cooled by the main heatsink, or at least a clear airflow path from the fans over the RAM.

Yeah that's what I used with 987mv and -9 power limit and just 925/1250 to run at 125h/s with not much more wattage than stock. You can push the core and memory higher and get a little more but it is almost not worth it imo. On a Sapphire though not MSI..

The timings stilt has posted are as tight as they can pretty much get for 200 based cards. Im more involved with 300/400 based cards. Either way the gains you'll get from copying lower memory straps into higher clocked straps will get you most of the way there. Any individual timing tweaks I would do would just increase stability and maybe get a few % extra hashrate.
Alright thanks for your input. For some of my Pitcairn cards that pretty much what I was doing taking the lower straps and using on the higher clocks, basically what we all did for the RX480s.
