One such a device is almost a half of the total HBN PoW network hash, which is around 700-1500 MHs last days. But it is only one.
What will be if someone smart and evil enough will point out couple of them to solo mining? Yes PoS is an additional security mechanism for the network, but it is still dangerous, dont you think?

HBN retargets difficulty every block. This will at least guard against trying to overload the blockchain with PoW blocks in a row that are exclusive to one miner. The retarget and the proof of stake should allow HBN to shield itself.
Ahh..how could I forget about diff retargets) Yeah..it will be very unprofitable soon after the attack.
But the diff will rise not only for the attacker, but for other PoW miners too...and then goes the distributed PoS, you're right.
*Just some thoughts aloud*

By the way, LTC GPU mining is already barely profitable even in Russia with 0.1$ per kwh, I think in Europe the situation is more sadly.
And HBN mining is around 105-110% of LTC mining most of the time.

Not to digress this thread too much, but an "ASIC invasion" is not necessarily a bad thing. There are many ways to mitigate the various attack vectors against HBN, and changing the algo is not necessarily the best approach. I support ASICs, because a more secure network means HBN is more likely to be taken seriously. Noobs and pump-and-dumpers forget that aggregate network strength is something merchants, end users, and non-mining investors look for in supporting a currency. The LiteCoin devs wisely chose to keep LTC sCrypt, and I fully support maintaining the sCrypt algo for HBN. Absent a fork, Tranz makes the final call of course. The discussion about sCrypt by Coblee et al in the LiteCoin thread elucidates the issues quite well.

The exchange volume is extremely low. Everyone is holding so if I want to buy a lot, I am screwed.

I would like to buy the equivalent of 4 BTC from someone at the current price, anyone ?
Yup, the whole Cryptsy sell volume is about 7500 HBNs, and if you buy the price will rise up to 0.0006.
And this is top volume exchange, and HBN volume at Cryptsy is sitting in around top 20 most traded currencies.

Everyone is holding and many ones are constantly buying, so the price is steadily rising.

... do we have a long term solution against thoses problems?

Do we have a long term solution against ASICs invasion?
Tranz, you were saying that they will secure the network, and this is a reason, but what about really heavy weapons, like KnCs when they will show up?

I saw similar threads in other not-so-big-as-LTC-and-DOGE scrypt coins discussions, may be there is a positive thought to run something like a vote of our community members concerning possible change of coin algorithm in some of the future forks?

What do you think guys.

talking about thoses huge blockchain makes me think: do we have a long term solution against thoses problems? because when chain will bu up 20gb like btc blockchain we kind of have a space management issue...

i know it's far ahead from us but still, having a solution around mmight be a good idea for when we need it

I don't think mintcoin was copied from hobonickels. Mintcoin had a brief (about 4-5 weeks) period of POW then went fully POS. Mintcoin has a 70billion coin cap and HBN has a 120 million coin cap. Mint is supposed to provide about 20% interest; hobonickels is currently providing around 100% interest. There are actually a lot of differences but those are some basics.

I only brought up mint to make a comparison about the blockchain sizes and to point out that HBN only being up to about 400mb is quite impressive as far as I am concerned.

I am new to the HoboNickels and minting concept so excuse my noob questions :

- is Mintcoin a copy of HoboNickels ? How many copy are they ?
- What is the difference between Mintcoin and HoboNockels ?
- What exchange do you use ? Do people buy/sell directly on the forum ?

Thanks

Not sure where Mintcoin's src came from, I am guessing it is a copy of peercoin or novacoin.
Mintcoin is now PoS only and HBN is still hybrid PoS/PoW.  Cryptsy is a good exchange to use to get HBN.

HBN is actually doing fairly well regarding block chain size.  Heading in on close to a year and just pushing 400meg size.    Also closing in on 1 million blocks.    So the size is good overall, just many small blocks.  I think this is a better problem to have then lower number of blocks, but bigger in size.

For comparison, the mintcoin (which has only been around for a couple months) blockchain is already around 600-700 mb.

hello tranz,

is there a way to include into the wallet (around the minting information) the rate of interest we can get with the current network size, i kind of like the way you displayed the minting process as a probability but right now i am concerned about the number of new holder and if i am actually reaching 2%/10 days
or if i am under it.

well basically i am just asking if you plan on putting more minting info in the new wallet ^^

May the force bit with you.
The new wallet 1.4.0.0 keeps crashing. I tried redownloading the blockchain several times, and after a while the wallet crashes. Anyone any ideas?

Might need a bit more information to help pip point the problem.

But it sounds like maybe a wallet maybe corrupted ? You can try to rename your wallet.dat(or others) to noloadwallet.dat and see if the client is still crashing.

See this page for more information

tranz,

wanted to get your opinion on Reddcoin's new innovation Proof of Stake Velocity (PoSV)

I wouldn't get too excited about it. They can't seem to provide any meaningful information in the "whitepapers" and when questioned about the basic functionality they explain like a politician.

They have been asked if their system would just encourage people to send coins back and forth between addresses they control, and the response was basically "oh no they won't need to do that, there wouldn't be a reason to" but then they say "the system rewards users who make transactions." So in other words this garbage will launch, and people will just send back and forth between their own addresses and abuse it, and the whole thing will be a clusterfuck.

Once the code is released, I'll have a look.  But if it is anything like rewarding people for sending coins, all you are going to get a bloated block chain.

The last thing HBN needs is adding more bloat to the chain. I was thinking about txcomments but then got to thinking that it adds extra bloat.

I can't believe they call that "innovation"!!!
What a freakin' mess  Grin

Hey don't get me wrong, if they have some valid explanation of how it is actually some amazing revolutionary new thing, I am more than willing to hear it. But the papers they released are a joke and when questioned about basic things they just deflect/ignore.

Try to play with the RPC command dumpwallet. You will visually see in a text file, all your keys and this will make more sense.  It's also a nice way to print out your keypool and physically store it in a safe place.

dumpwallet is a good way to see your keys. This is also in the GUI under File->Export Wallet
