Do they really take away from BTC and LTC?

At the end of the day almost all ALT Coins are directly traded for BTC - BTC is like the Gold standard of crypto currencies. This just further establishes BTC as the primary crypto currency.

The other point is why have people felt the need to create these alt coins. The answer is quite obvious - the difficulty of BTC forces centralisation and with the likes of ASICMiner who seem to know no limits to their greed are making it impossible for the common man to make any money at all.  ASICMiner are incapable of maintaining a steady hash rate with massive fluctuations to the magnitude of 30Ths  - no money has been spent on resilience or redundancy otherwise we would not see the erratic network performance just further indicating their commitment to filling their own pockets at the expense of everyone else.

To top off the fact the totally incompetent manner the ASIC technology has been rolled out giving a select few a massive advantage over everyone else just furthers the resentment.

What is the difference of having central banks - a monopoly on printing money versus several massive centralised mining operations who have a monopoly on generating BTC. AKA Meet the new boss - same as the old Boss. (I realise there is a technical difference in the way they operate - but to the man on the street - there is none)

Look at the most profitable coins - they are all scrypt for the simple reason the current generation of ASIC's do not work for scrypt mining and the community has decided that a level playing field (hardware that can be purchased next day) is preferable to specialist technology that is almost impossible to get hold of.

If you're making $3 a day with 4 GPUs they must be pretty weak

Think the only coins worth looking at are the ones on Mt Gox, litecoin included because it will be on Mt Gox in July. Yes I believe when cryptocurrency is mainstream a few others will make it to the top as well, but right now BTC and LTC. I think any genuinely innovative new coins will have to wait until all the money-hungry clones stop coming.

yes the number of coins is getting a bit silly, think im stopping at 23 listed on my website unless something else notable comes along....

 Can new coins fix these flaws, yes... but then they will have flaws, then another coin will replace that one, and another replace that one...

 There is going to be a never-ending flow of new ideas coming in to implement into a coin, it will never stop. So, most people dont stop to think about this long enough.... Thats why I say BTC and LTC.

I only mentioned PPC and NMC due to their actual innovative contributions to the cryptocurrency world. That's why I believe they are worthy.

It's pretty simple. The coins that should get a pass are the ones that A) introduce something new and B) were around before the coin craze started. It's not as though it's hard to distinguish shitty coins from potentially valuable ones.

For me, the clear coins in this category are LTC, PPC, and NMC. There are arguments for NVC, TRC, and DVC, but they are (respectively) a sketchy premine, a difficulty roller coaster, and institutionally-controlled.

Given, all efforts should realistically be focused on BTC, thats why we are all here today, and we all want to see it gain tremendous value and make us lots of money while being accepted worldwide in many various applications. LiteCoin can have its useful purpose as well, but if we say "X" coin should be counted in, and "XX" coin shouldnt be left out, where does it stop, then we end up right where we began in this mess. Everyone has their own opinion, and these people wont stop mining and putting useless efforts into all these alts, but the fact is BTC is where we need to be, and people getting into LTC wont hurt as it can provide a good alternative to BTC, we all like LTC anyway. BTC, LTC. Imagine if everyone here stopped mining all these other coins, stopped throwing money at alts, and just focused on these two, advertised, created websites... etc.. We would be a lot farther along...

also namecoin should be left alone as well, doesn't deserve to be on your shitlist
