I'm even quite happy when people around me ask about my activities with Bitcoin because they can provide an explanation of the advantages and disadvantages that I get from Bitcoin.
That is a different case, while you have stated the right thing in the next point.

Apart from explaining the advantages and disadvantages of Bitcoin from the positive side, I will absolutely not show them the number of assets and things that are confidential that other people should not know.

It's never safe to show assets to someone you don't even know. Even if you're very much in favor of privacy, you should also keep your bitcoin holdings tightly sealed from the government and anyone who knows you. For me it was done to minimize the risk, so the tips and user advice here seem worth considering. Your assets are for you, and you must secure them in various ways. You don't need to be someone like Michael J. Saylor who is always announcing his bitcoin holdings on social media. He was someone different, but there was a possibility that he would become the target of a hack.

Talking about our crypto investments make us a target, and not only from the mafia, the hackers could try to access our coins too, and that's why it isn't a wise move at all. While lower profile we have will be better for us. We have to play it smart.

Some years ago I read a story on the opposite side, a youtube kidnapped a couple and asked for cryptos to let them go, and I don't know how the police trace those bitcoins and find who was responsible, now the guy is on the jail, but the news was all around.

Showing the number of assets and other things that are important to keep secret, is the same as giving people the opportunity to take actions that will harm us.
Not happening today, maybe tomorrow, next week and for sure they will try to get what we have shown.

I agree with @OP because that's what we must do to protect our assets from the target of bad people who want to take our assets. We can hide all our assets without anyone knowing, especially from people we don't know because we don't know their true intentions.

It's better to keep it for ourselves so we can keep using crypto in peace and pass it on to our children later. In addition, owning crypto means we are responsible for everything from people who want to cheat or steal our assets.
Bitcoin's security depends only on a private key. Whoever has the private key to a wallet can access that wallet and control assets at any time. So whether or not anyone knows about our bitcoin holdings. we must first make sure that our private key is secure on In a safe place. And if our private key is kept securely and no one gets it then no one will be able to steal our bitcoins. So I don't care if anyone knows about my bitcoin investment or not

The first thing that came to my mind after reading this was that one should not talk about his crypto investments with strangers or friends as it can pose various risks. If you are active on forums like bitcointalk and involved in trades, you should not give information which can help others relate to your identity.
If you keep your mouth shut, you would save your life and that of the members of your family. The only person who in my opinion should know about your investment deals, your assets, how much money you own and others is your lawyer. Many people want to show off as if they are in a competition with their neighbours who do not even given a damn about them.. you'd see them on Tiktok and other social media sites talking about how much they have made from a trade, showing off expensive crypto lifestyles etc. These people are only putting themselves at risk. Keep shut, build in silence and most especially be more cautious about your friends than your enemies becasue your friends know your weak points and could easily strike than your enemies.

The issue is: how can you introduce new people to Bitcoin and promote it without telling them you are a Bitcoin investor? If you close yourself inside a shelter of anonimity, you won't share experiences with other people around you. You limit yourself a lot by not absorbing what they have to teach you, and by not teaching them what you know.

I think there is no issue to tell others you are a Bitcoin enthusiast, and to share ideas with them about this subject. The only thing which isn't advised to do is to tell them how much money you have invested and to never boast an ostensible way of life on your social medias (what is also valid for people who aren't Bitcoin investors). Being discreet, but not lonely or introspective is a more healthy alternative...

There is a proverb, or even two, that can be applied to the topic.
"Money loves silence" and "Your language, your enemy"
I think everyone understands the meaning of these two proverbs. Many people like to show off, telling, or showing on their social networks, or to their friends about earning in Bitcoin. Boasting, people put themselves in danger, which can come unexpectedly from scammers. There are too many envious people and other dishonest people in the world who can go to crime to take what they think someone else has. The most ridiculous and at the same time terrible can happen to someone who boasted about the amount of bitcoin in his wallet but did not have the amount he was talking about. It will not be difficult for bouncers with a wrench to find out his passphrase from a wallet, so the most expensive “gold” is silence. No matter how much the earnings are, there is no need to shout about it, vanity is a bad quality that never leads a person to good.

Actually, it's not only when you invest in Bitcoin or crypto but in all types of investments it's better if it remains a secret and only tells your spouse or other closest family members, and I'm not quite sure that anyone will be happy to show off their asset portfolio because it will invite many who are not good to come to him.
From the news link you mentioned, I only see that the media uses the keyword crypto investors to be able to get traffic to its website from crypto lovers because no details have been conveyed apart from the kidnappings and crypto investors, so it's not news that is made in detail so it's not convincing enough to believe.

Never talk about any of your assets to people you don't trust. And it's not just Bitcoin. Because bad things will happen if you open all your assets to people. I only talk about Bitcointalk but I never talk about anything like how much assets I have and how I make profit from forums. I'm just saying if you want some money you can try investing in cryptocurrency or become a bounty hunter on forums.

My bitcointalk life and my physical life are very different. Different circles, different areas, different languages, etc. But occasionally I do mention Bitcointalk to people, and some know I'm into cryptos. They don't know how much I have, how long I've been into Bitcoin, what I do on the forum or what's my forum name (only a very small handful of people know that). I don't have much, to be honest, so I feel alright. But I understand that some people have more and may not talk about Bitcoin at all because they want to avoid being targeted.

It depends on your circle, be watchful of your circle first and get rid of any threat lurking, jealousy friend and co, you should know them because the answer is always within, do not deceive yourself thinking it's not what you saw.

Bitboy and other crypto influencers on Youtube have family and friends and I've never heard that one got kidnapped or betrayed, the thing is, such people go around with someone like them, everyone knows where they get their money from and they influence others too, either friends or family.

Going around enjoying yourself with friends that are also millionaires from crypto is far safer than going around with friends that are finding it hard to catch up to you, it is dangerous.

This is the reason Satoshi make this forum decentralized and anyone privacy is anonymous here.
Bitcointalk forum is not decentralized, it is owned and controlled by the admins, but there is no kyc and you don't have to register with your personal details; but the forum is centralized, though you can keep your privacy and be anonymous as a member in the forum.
Some of my friends recently get to know about me being into bitcoin because sometimes when I'm less busy I come on the forum to work, so in doing this some questions arose here and there.
If your friends find out you are posting and reading on Bitcointalk forum, it does not mean you own BTC's, Bitcointalk is a discussion forum and you should tell them that you want to get knowledge in BTC, you can even invite them to join the forum, the only problem can come from you, and that is if you start to tell them wrongly that Bitcointalk is a place of work, or where one can make money.

He asked his friend if he knew anyone in the area — they put him in touch with a trio from Greece and Albania. After partying together for several days, they apparently decided to turn on him.
I guess his spendings must have alerted the criminals that he's well to do or he must have spilled some secret about his wealth when under the influence of alcohol. But come to think of it, why would his friend hook him up with 3 criminals? I guess he would claim he didn't know that they were criminals... It's up to the police to connect the dots.

Advice: Be careful of the kind of people you keep as friends and don't draw attention to yourself by unnecessary or lavish spendings.
The last line I totally agree with.

1. It is very important to always keep our financial status or information a secret, most especially, from friends, and it doesn't matter how close we are to them or they to us, never trust anybody, except family, and even family have to prove themselves trust worthy before we give them our complete trust, anybody can do anything for money, one movie I watched, a son told his mother "when it involves money, trust no one, even me".

If Bitcoin and other digital currencies are completely illegal in your country, it's best not to discuss your Bitcoin holdings with anyone. You can be in danger if you discuss Bitcoin with everyone even though it is completely illegal in your country.

And if cryptocurrency is legal in your country, you can discuss it with people who don't know about bitcoin or crypto currency and show interest in learning about it but never share your personal information with them. If you share something personal with them, no matter how much you like them, it will be seen that you have suffered a lot from their point of view.

As much as you can talk to them about bitcoin or cryptocurrencies without sharing your personal stuff, it won't hurt you. But always keep your personal safety in mind.

You can use your brain to think how privacy matter is important, it's not only limited to Bitcoin, but it's happen on anything that's has a value.

You can try using your social media to know what's the other people will react to your condition. Start from today to the next week by complaining about God and you don't have money, act become the most painful person in this world.

Then the next month you can upload all of your achievement e.g. have a house, super car, luxury lifestyle and a lot money.

After that, compare it.

It is important to keep your bitcoin investment secret from others specially if you have a lot of investments, to protect yourself from potential theft or scams. It is important to check on the potential risk and benefits of sharing information about your investment to others. So be vigilant in discussing your investments to others because they might be spying on you. Never ever disclose to anyone your earnings stay in a low profile level to keep you safe.

Be as secretive as the secret service. Never discuss your investment with strangers but if you must say for example in a gathering of people with like minds, and you have to talk about it, remove the important details or better still, talk about something similar but not the exact thing.

The kidnap story has more to do with being security conscious and doing a deep background check on wherever you are travelling to than is crypto related. As a stranger in another country where you are not familiar with, stay where other visitors stay and not with the locals. Overall stay alert.

It's not a big deal for people like us who don't have big investments. You don't need to tell anyone about your investments, big or small, though. In a bad situation that may occur in your health, it is useful to tell a relative of your investments. Do not tell anyone about your investments in any way other than for health reasons. Because there is no need.

You can talk about the presence of savings in bitcoin only to those with whom you are ready to share this, leave it as an inheritance, or simply give it away. The rest of the people don't need to know about this, for the sake of your own safety and the safety of your funds. Today you trust people and share such information, and tomorrow you can ruin your relationship with them and their desire for easy money can cost you dearly.

There is nothing to say about precautionary measures in public forums. This has been discussed many times and is a banal safety measure on the network, which implies the following: don't talk too much.
The subject shouldn't be limited to cryptocurrency; the victim in this case happened to be a crypto investor, it was a simple coincidence, anyone wealthy or well-off could have been the victim. Unless you are intimately linked to someone, there is typically no reason to disclose your financial situation, and even then, it is best to keep your distance. Never assume someone or anybody else who may be listening is completely trustworthy. You shouldn't brag too much about how well you're doing, just as you wouldn't count money in a public setting, you'd get mugged. You can't comprehend the lengths people will go to in order to ruin something because they are envious beings.

Dear op it's not the first time when you expose your earning, investment and salaries openly, you always face consequences. It does not matter, if your investment or salaries is in BTC or Fiat. All that matter is money. Because if the scammer, hacker, blackmailer etc. Have to ask for money they will always chose crypto as method but you know what they could also be tracked from crypto method.

The best practice is to not show your earning openly, why? Let me tell you:
  • The worst scenario is what you have mentioned , because if a theft knows your earning, he could steal it from you. In any way possible like by kidnapping too,
  • Second scenario is, once you showed your earning, people in your friend, relative zones will try to borrow money from you. Its not a bad practice to lend interest free money but they will borrow money for no necassary reason and always will be late to pay it of.
  • Many will try to judge your way of earning and will think accordingly about you, for example if you are earning more or have big investments, manuly will think about you having a bad job which makes you more money. And that's true because i have seen people talking the same.

There were many cases about kidnapping a investor or there nearby ones (loved ones). But still many people try to show off by think that it's not that much money while to others its too much. And they fall for greed and think to take it from you with any way possible (only the devlish mind)
