This post honestly needs to be pinned. Even though I'm pretty sure new members don't read pinned topics anyway.

Tip: One of the most useful refined search tricks in browsing bitcointalk is using the "site:" query.

Example:
Code:
site:bitcointalk.org signature campaigns
That Google query will view you all or most relevant topics concerning signature campaigns, that are only under the bitcointalk.org domain.
Thanks for your tips. This is my first time I know this feature of search function. This one will help me a lot and save my time.

Why does the forum even have the non-Google search option?  (And I agree that this thread should be pinned for newbies like me - some of us DO read pinned topics). I have been frustrated with the 90 second search delays for several weeks now. I often would enter a search query only to realize that I hadn't logged in to the site - and then I was immediately told I had to wait 90 seconds?!? Other times I entered a search and got no relevant results, so I would try again with altered search terms and hit that same 90 second wall. Angry

I saw the "You are searching too quickly. Wait 90 seconds. (There is a Google-based search engine on the search page that does not have this limit.)" note, but was confused and didn't realize that the Google-based search had so much flexibility so I always ended up closing out the forum in frustration. I was about to start a thread this morning about my frustrations, but before doing so finally figured it out - found the Google-based search, and found this thread in doing my search.

I think the OP's explanation should be pinned and the Google Search should be more prominently displayed/linked as the main search option - rather than as a backup option only thrown out after the two-searches-within-90-seconds restriction.

Just as further illustration, I was browsing through some topics of interest recently and came across a thread where several site veterans were berating another member for asking a forum question which the vets believed could have been quickly and easily answered by using the search feature. Rather than do some searching, he took the lazy way out by asking someone else to spoon feed him. I wasn't about to jump in on that one (and truth be told, they were probably right - if the other member would have used the Google based search).  But at that point, my only experience was with the site's restrictive search button at the top right. So my thought was that it was impossible to find relevant information on site and be careful asking what others consider simple questions or you might end up with your head bitten off.

So THANK YOU to the OP who explained it a little better.  I still haven't quite figured out this whole merit thing or whether I have any to give out yet, but there will be a future 'donation' to you once I know a bit more about it.   Wink

Don't think so, as this is done intentionally to stop users/bots from spamming the forum with requests.

If there would be no delay, people with bad intentions / botnets could keep spamming it, effectively resulting in the forum being ddosed.
Which is my theory^, not sure why else they would put a cooldown timer on it.

It is, but i have noticed that with rank i can search faster with less delay. So i think the delay is combined with the post limit a rank can do every min/sec.

Yes, it should be pinned.

I've used the search engine some times, and the most annoying thing is to wait 90 seconds to use it again.

Can that be changed?

Due to the fact that daily we get so many double topics asking for the same question already asked on the forum, and because there is no thread on how to search on this forum.
This thread will be dedicated to the forum search and DFAQ (Daily frequently asked questions).

Where to find the search button

Obviously the search button is located above next to the help and donate button:

How to search
The forum has 2 ways to search on this forum.

Google search
The google search can be found here:

The way the integrated google search works is the same as the google.com search engine, however the integrated google search only searches for topics/post in the public forum boards.
Google search can be used more often than the "normal" forum search functionality, due to the fact that this method costs less forum resources.

The advantages for the integrated google search is that you can use queries to refine your search as detailed here:
https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433

Example
You want to know what a bounty is, you can search for it in 2 ways:

Search: What is a bounty
Yields:

Most of this information is not relevant, that's why you can refine your search results by using a simple method:

Search: "What is a bounty"
Yields:

By inserting the "", google search will search for exactly the same words put into the "", therefore it yields much better information than without the "".

Disadvantages of using the integrated google search functionality is that we can't search within specific boards, for example the altcoin announcement boards.

Integrated forum search
The other method is using the integrated forum search located here:

The integrated forum search uses more resources than the google search and can't be used as often as the google search.

The advantages of this method is that you can use a lot of ways to find topics about certain questions:

Different ways of outputting your search:

  • Most relevant topics first --> Checks based on your search query which topic matches your query the most and outputs this as first
  • Largest topics first --> Checks based on the total amount of posts (the largest) in a topic and based on your query, which topic displays as first
  • Smallest topics first -->Checks based on the total amount of posts (the smallest) in a topic and based on your query, which topic displays as first
  • Most recent topics first --> Displays the output of your query based on the topics that were created recently
  • Oldest topics first --> Displays the output of your query based on the topics that were created the first

Other benefits to the integrated forum search is that you can search in specific forum boards:

Example
You would like to know all new airdrops posted recently

Query:
Search for: Airdrop
Search order: Most recent topics first
Untick all boards and tick only "bounties altcoins"

Yields:

The most recently posted airdrops will be showed on the first page, based on the date of creation.

What to do if hacked
Hi there,

I just made this account in order to get some assistance.  My bitcointalk account has been hacked (password has been reset by someone else).

The e-mail address and bitcoin addresses associated with the account are mine and I can prove that.  If this has happened to anyone, or you know the process to recover the account, can you please share some insight?

Thanks.
