They wanted to see how they start and if they had wickets in hand, they would have gone for the semifinals. Why is that? Why is winning without targeting the semifinals is even an option?

As India has played more matches and won trophies than South Africa in T20 World Cup. So Indian team players have more experience than South Africa, as there are many old players in experienced Indian team, today's match is in their favourites.
India is far ahead of South Africa in all aspects of the T20 format, so it is difficult to predict the outcome of today's match. But the South African team will try hard to win the trophy by defeating India in today's match. However, as the match is tossed now and India have got the opening batting, surely India will play very well in today's match against South Africa and every player will work responsibly.
