It depends!
If some serious bug is found in code this will be the end of all coins, because they are all copies. Trust will be lost forever, and i believe this advantage will be taken by big corporations and banks this is simple. Their solutions will save us all!
Else i don't see how Bitcoin can suddenly be dead?

Money often costs too much.
The logical answer is ethereum but i guess better projects are out there. Not dash, but maybe pivx and stratis and nem
NEM = "new economy movement" that sounds nice at least, marketing wise. I have forgotten what NXT stood for Sad and seemingly its a ghost town by now, not a prospering competitor. NEM and NXT stood on my notecard since when I began exploring BTC.
Maybe their Ardor rebranding can revive it? Nobody mentioned it so far as I have seen.

Look ARROUND!
Ripple
Stellar
SingularDTV
IEx.ec
Golem
SingularDTV could have the huge price increase that everyone in that thread wants, as of now the price of the coin is very expensive so I would have to sit that out unless there's a huge dump.

so let's assume bitcoin has imploded. there's still an alt market and you're still committed to the concept of crypto.

where do you put your money after that? what other projects do you truly believe in long term? i don't mean the pursuit of quick dollars, i mean something that you're willing to sit on for many years with enough integrity and potential to really go places.

Ethereum, litecoin and ripple are big contenders but any coin could make a big surprise like dogecoin and burstcoin and who knows a darkhorse coin could emerge like Burstcoin and Mrai all of these has a strong community support

It would be LTC without a doubt.  China's only option also...  Ripple and XMR would have no chance.

If the idea is to "store value for the long term", or "play greater fool" I don't see the use of crypto.  If it is to use as a currency, it doesn't matter much, does it, from the moment you can acquire it, and spend it.  But "currency usage" is not something that became a success in crypto 'currencies', is it ?

The only reason to use crypto is when you can't do it with fiat, for one or another reason.  I can only think of things like monero, or zcash or so, to be suitable for that.  I wouldn't touch DASH with a stick.  I guess LTC could be used for those things that have some fiat obstacle that isn't a legal obstacle, and where you don't have to hide (but in most cases, then you CAN use fiat).  And if you want to gamble, most probably eth or one of its ICO tokens for gamblers, is suitable.

But it all depends on why you need crypto (why can't you do it with fiat ?) ; different needs may/should induce different coins.

If it is to trade and to play greater-fool games, the coin doesn't really matter, does it ?  It is penny stock then.

In my knowledge if ever Bitcoin dies then 99% all of the crypto currency will die because when Bitcoin like old coins can die then what is the fate of other coins. All of the coins are valued under Bitcoin and do you think that if Bitcoin dies do the crypto currency users will have faith on other altcoins, I dont think so. So Bitcoin death is the death of crypto currency and all of them will go back to the fiat currency way.

XMR is actually the good choice, fair mining and large adoption in black market, I will go for ETH, XMR, STRAT, GNT.
XMR is pretty good though I think that it's overpriced for the time being. The Darknet price pump wasn't worth the hype, there should be more people trying to use Monero instead of Bitcoin.

It might seem funny though I think that Ripple would be the one that survives if Bitcoin fails.

None,

It wont dies, just because asciboost miner are investing tons of money/time to try preserve their advantage..

Bitcoin have the Brand and the Brains !

I stick with it,

After this drama, when we'll be in SegWit mode, mining and Bitcoin in general will just be more fair, and more eficient for all..

Dont panic, be patient..

Nothing last forever. Eventually Bitcoin will die. But I agree with you will not be that fast.

About the choice who would took over, you could hear opinion of guy who saved a NASA shuttle mission back  in 1994

Howard: Yeah. I suppose if you dig into Monero as I have done and do the reading and you think about cryptocurrencies work or how they should work, you start to realize that Monero is actually unique. In a field where there are thousands of coins out there, new ones being forked off and presented every day, Monero is actually, as I put it, it’s the only one that actually deserves the title of cryptocurrency, right? If you look at where the word “crypto” comes from, from the Greek “cryptos” which means hidden, okay? And you look at the science of cryptography; most of cryptography is oriented towards obfuscating data, hiding information. Alright, hiding information such that only the person you want to see it is allowed to see it, right?
Mike: Yeah.
Howard: But if you look at every other “cryptocurrency” that exists, none of them actually hides information.
Mike: I guess, you could argue that Bitcoin uses cryptography to hide the keys to your wallet and that everything else while being public, if you can’t hide the keys, then there’s no way that this could work. You could argue that that still fits that definition, couldn’t you?
Howard: That’s like saying, okay, you hide the keys to the front door of your house, right? Everybody still knows that your house is sitting where it is.
Mike: True.
Howard: But the important part… You can consider a key to be an access control mechanism, it says, this is how you get through this doorway, right?
Mike: Sure.
Howard: But with Monero, everything is hidden, even the door is hidden.
Mike: Okay.
Howard: The information that’s being transmitted over the Monero network is hidden and that’s really what cryptography is about, about hiding the messages.
Mike: Yeah, okay, so maybe you’d be happy calling Bitcoin a digital currency, but Monero is a true cryptocurrency, I can buy that.

Mentioned here a few times already, but I would also go with Litecoin. It's similar to Bitcoin and a little bit better imo.
I also really like that fact that there will more coins in circulation than with Bitcoin. I've always found that 21 million cap a bit on the low side.

So, the highest coin on the market cap list I could find that I don't dislike is Peercoin. So I will go with that!
PPC has gotten my attention as long as the pegged at a dollar NBT NuBits project was healthy. Now I would not know what to do with those PPC besides selling.
And by coincidence Tether currently has legal issues against Wells Fargo, Bitfinex might get affected.

If high volatile crypto coins fall flat, maybe anything "1 Dollar" stabilized construct might jump into the gap. Makes sense that those occasionally have run into issues, maybe there are bigger forces watching this development too.

None of these pegged coins seem to be able to survive. Tether sounds like it might be screwed for now. And what's the point of holding a pegged coin long term anyway?  Stick with a bank account and you get the same money with insurance and zero risk.
