Such a situation won't arise and if that happens too  no altcoin grow same as bitcoin. Lot and lots of altcoins are found, people prefer different coins based on the requirement. This will diverse the user profiles causing the altcoins to be listed next to bitcoin.
It could happen, even if the new coin is not as strong as bitcoin was, the amount of money invested in crypto will get bigger as it gets more popular and that will allow any altcoin to eventually reach a greater market cap that the one bitcoin could have reached.

Wow nice topic it really caught me,
There are plenty of alt-coin right now but I don't really know where would I go if bitcoin dies,
Maybe I would go where most of people would go that's what I think I would do if it ever happens.

XMR.

The only other decent contender would be ETH, but ETH lost me when the devs abused their centralized power.

if bitcoin dies crypto dies, but I would go all-in on XMR, and hope I was wrong

2012-13 maybe, but definitely not any more. there's dollar markets for enough alts now and some of them are off doing things that bitcoin can't. it's kind of getting to a point now where i think it's stupid that people get uptight about bitcoin losing 'market share'. the market should be splintering. there's so much more happening now.

PIVX, DASH look good. I tried ethereum but neither mist nor solidarity wallet would open and work on my machine. However, I think ethereum might just takeover.  Grin

LTC without a doubt, I  have not checked recently but the support for segwit was big there so we may see the activation very soon if it has not happened already and with it we may see a bull run for segwit.

if Bitcoin dies, crypto dies for a generation.

Of course not.
There are already better alternatives on the market, more resistant to hostile corporate takeovers.

My realistic answer is that I wouldn't put my money in crypto anymore, if Bitcoin dies, crypto dies for a generation.

Using your rules though, I would have to go to an alt. Looking at the top coins, I couldn't imagine why Litecoin would succeed when Bitcoin fails. I don't trust ETH or centralized Ripple. Anonymous coins have no wide spread future, they are fo buying drugs.

So, the highest coin on the market cap list I could find that I don't dislike is Peercoin. So I will go with that!

I think more than 50% of the people will leave the crypto currencies. People are here because of Bitcoin.
I don't trade into altcoins more but I would like to try LTC it Zcash if there was a certain situation. I think they both have the potential to sustain for some years.
Initially Bitcoin caught all of the attention, yes. But if any coin could claim beeing "Bitcoin 2.0" or similar, kinda the right inheritor? Would have to be in line with current source code. Some further developped variant.
I don't think a coin with such a potential of bitcoin exists anymore getting a good developer team as bitcoin has got. Bitcoin 2.0 might be a possible one, but it might exist as a competitor and not as a replacement for the present bitcoin.

i will do with ltc and etc although i am not sure with this 2 altcoin but i think its fine to choose them. but i think, as long as many people still using bitcoin, then there is no chance for bitcoin to died and only because of the dev and the team with the community, bitcoin can get stronger than we know.

None, if Bitcoin dies the money will leave the market and other Altcoins will follow. I still believe in that Bitcoin is what is keeping Cryptocurrencies network effect together.
Just a commonsense thing to happen on which people will surely jump on other coin or crypto when bitcoin tend to die and dont think too seriously since its just an assumption since we do all know bitcoin wont easily die or being replaced.there are lots of potential alts around does capable on taking the top spot.

I would personally go with Ethereum. But, because Litecoin is so much like Bitcoin, I would also go for Litecoin.
I guess 2 is better than 1 XD

Good choices, since these two are making noise in the crypto market. But still when this happen, I really can't see any alt coin to choose and well if I will ever quit after this scenario. Maybe I'll be back for a couple of months or longer and will look on the news on what's the current and if the market is still promising I'll in and will choose.
