Sure, they can do it. A government has big power to push bitcoin's activity in a country. Even they can't to stop 100 percent. So, I think to make Bitcoin will survive, we have to collaborate with government. I mean, we have to pay taxes for digital asset, fee transaction, or something else. At least it can release one of threats of bitcoin in future.

I don't think that any government could stop Bitcoin since Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency that the transaction is done without any third party interference and it is done all over the globe freely. Since Bitcoin is not linked to any territory or financial institute we need only network connections and wallets for the transaction it is not necessary for exchanges so I don't think that even powerful governments could stop Bitcoin even if they wanted.
I do not think so, I believe that if power governments want, stop bitcoin is possible, power is absolute in this world, Bitcoin is still a technology created based on human knowledge, humans can create, humans can also destroy, Bitcoin can not resist this power. However, they will not do that when the bitcoin does not affect too much to their country, as long as bitcoin is still valuable to build their country, they will still let it survive, but if it creates big trouble, bad impact to the economy and society, they can only take all measures to remove it

Nothing and no predictions can be made beforehand in case of in-beta currencies like bitcoins

I don't see that they can do it by now and I think if they wanted to kill it they naybe work for it for some change I mean they will legalized it for their own way of building their coin market and acquiring that bysiness can really help the government more active in their own coins that they have in a last few years

Just because it has no taxation no Govt can ban it. If there were some more of the legit reasons then it would have been possible

The governments could stop bitcoin. First,  the governments could make bitcoin illegal to buy/sell/own bitcoin. This would reduce the demand for bitcoin for anything other than black market transactions. Second, they could increase pressure on anyone exchanging bitcoin for cash to record the transaction and identity of whomever they bought or sold from. This would make it much harder to use bitcoin anonymously and also substantially reduce the ease of using bitcoin. If the governments could do those two thing,  it would stop bitcoin I guess.

That will be a remote possibility because almost all of the powerful countries tend to implement more on regulation and taxation rather than banning cryptocurrencies. The virtual currencies aready recieved some positive statements from G20 summit for cryptocurrencies. The ongoing summit is set to discuss the potential impact of cryptocurrencies and also coordinate in the effort to eliminate dta gaps in the emerging market. The summit will also try to discuss about regulations and adoptation of some existing rules on the governance of cryptocurrencies. So there is no possibility that some of these powerful countries will try to stop bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The governments would not be able to stop their citizens from trading or selling bitcoins online, but the governments could always try to impose much more tighter rules and regulations on crypto-currencies and this will definitely affect the values of bitcoin.

Bitcoins are so loved by global mass that if any govt dared to go against it then he would have to get crushed under pressure

The problem with the crypto world is not that bitcoin can be banned, but with ICOs and related companies are under SEC eye now. Court proceedings have already started, SEC is investigating cases of non-licensed companies involved in realising of utility tokens.

Governments cant stop bitcoin but they can lower the price enough that you nearly lost your whole investment. Without government and bank approval bitcoin will have to fall back to a level where it is supported by the underground, probably back around $250, before rising up again for good.

I think the government can stop bitcoin with their power and shut down the internet because the internet is a way for people to use bitcoin. but I don't think that the government wants to do this because if they shut down the internet or stop bitcoin, then it will be a chaos in every place and they will face many demonstrations from the people.
I think it is more impossible to shutdown the internet just to stop bitcoin. All new technology are works through internet and even all the company and industry are dependent to internet which it cannot work without it. Bitcoin can ban by the government but will not totally stop it.
Yes, I think the possible to ban bitcoin by governments is to shutdown internet .They cant stop bitcoin because people are really interested and have willingness to do such transaction like bitcoin. Internet is the most important to communicate with others If they shutdown internet people will make a protest, so I think bitcoin will never diminished by the powerful of governments.

They could regulate it, but I don't think they have any legal backup for bans. Bitcoin, having open ledger, could be used for governments to track transactions...

I think killing the bitcoin and altcoins is impossible, but they can cripple the communication, blocking websites like bitcointalk, forbid exchanges, and so on.

The one government that could theoretically threaten bitcoin, I suppose, is China, given that a large percentage of the mining is done in that country. However, I think the probability for that is very low.

Well, they can buy down 21 million BTC and keep all of them to themselves, essentially 'killing' Bitcoin. Smiley On a serious note, no, I feel that it is difficult for them to do so. Even if countries like China tries to ban Bitcoin in their own country, they cant exactly do so to the whole world, and there will always be a use for Bitcoin somewhere else.

Bitcoin is still gaining popularity, and its community is growing, so unless all the governments team up and say NO to BTC, it would not happen (I hope).
Citizens > Government, and we need to believe this as well.
Yes bitcoin will never die so the altcoins. There will be big event in this month which G 20 will have some conference about cryptocurrency in argentina. I hope it would not make cryptocurrency even worse than now.
