i bet he's still down because real estate been going up... if hes in alberta sure maybe hes even.. but in BC the prices rising like 10% a month.

Didn't look it up, but I assume you mean in the very short term.  10% a month is 1.1 ^ 12 = 314% of price per year.  Nothing does that consistently.

That is a pretty dumb thing to do because betting your house is way to dumb. I would never sell my house to  go all in, my house is way to important and special to me to give away.

That I'm agree with, to sold house for any investment sounds just to crazy. I remember a guy from few months ago, who sold everything and put all on red ( you can fins video on YouTube ). This is totally similar story, both of them risking a lot in my opinion.

Its a thin line between crazy and dumb, this guy's are proving that. The guy on roulette had luck, he doubled his money ( he took more then 230 000 $ ), I hope OP can have also luck to double, and with btc is possible to triple his money.

I wouldnt see why not.

Youre not aware of the housing situation and not know enough about it. It takes 30 years for a house appreciate in its value, and 2nd you dont know about the markets within where that house is so bitcoin is probably the best solution for them.

Its same thing as getting cash value and I`m sure he sold of his bitcoins and prepared for it while the price held.

Looks like it's starting to pay off, congratulations on your foresight and bravery. Enjoy the rewards, and give some of it to others, to those who need it most and are best able to use it. The more you give the more you get! Plus receiving for yourself as well as giving to others is more fun than just receiving for yourself without giving to others.

Remember most people who win the lottery or more depressed a number of years after winning than before. People need direction in life, having wealth is great, but Wealth makes a good servant, but a terrible master.
Use your wealth to increase your love and wisdom for others, this will help you not only acquire even more wealth in the future, but be able to additionally give more that you acquire away while maintaining and increasing your happiness and direction in life. It's a wonderful feedback loop  Cheesy

Hi All,

I have been following Bitcoin for over a year and was the first person ever to put my house for sale for bitcoin.

http://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/yourcommunity/2013/03/alberta-man-accepting-bitcoins-in-exchange-for-home.html

Not sure if you followed my story from a year ago, but the house just sold on Friday, and will make the news tomorrow I suspect. When the house closed on Friday I got approximately 648 BTC for my house which is based on prices over the past 6 months when the deal was actively negotiated, legal fees, realtor fees, and a bunch of contract wording that I frankly don't understand. I am now all in! I really believe in bitcoin. It is the future of the world. I look forward to the continued price increase and one day I plan to own my own island. I will truly be a bitcoin billionaire by the time I am 25 I believe. This house was inherited from my father who passed away a few years ago and he always believed in me and told me I would make it big one day and so I shall. Wish me luck Smiley

That took some balls!  You'll make a fortune if you HODL.
You have some balls if you are selling your house for some Bitcoins I would never do that because my home is my base. Only for some millions I would be able to sell my house.

Just checking back today.

** Update **

I am still around.

I still have all my bitcoin.

If you check the original posting from 2 years ago, I did indeed sell my house for Bitcoin, and there are links to the actual news articles.

I currently live in Toronto now, and rent a house with friends.

The price of Bitcoin is currently at close to $700US or $900 CDN.

My original investment is worth $598,000 CDN.

My initial investment is up nearly 50% since I purchased Bitcoin 2 years ago.

Cheers,

Tay More

a newbie with 6 posts, but a 64 page thread & balls of steel and approaching his first million $(can)...  very, very efficient. jgray, you showed them all. congrats, mate.

The OP came in here and posted an update. Don't be such a grump LOL it was a huge news story at the time as the first house sold for Bitcoin. Can you think of a more legitimate use for Bitcoin THAN BUYING A HOUSE?!

Canada is the only western country to own no gold at all to back its currency and I guess the countries main asset is oil.   With the price down now, they are effecively devalued vs USA which is heavily supported as a reserve currency so from that point of view its smart not to be exclusive to one country

Must say - whether you believe in this guy's actions or not - this thread is becoming EPIC.

Quite ironic he listed as a noob because of only having six posts but he is quite a legend really.   I still wonder why only the one asset of bitcoin, I'd assumed he had a house elsewhere but renting with friends can be cheap also

I remember when this was all over the news. I'm glad to see the op coming back and updating us.
OP, are you planning on holding them all or do you have plans to lock in some of your profit.

Damn man you got some real guts selling your ancestral house for bitcoin. If I were you I would not do that because there's a small probability that bitcoin will fall in the future so better that you sell some of your bitcoin in the coming halving, just recover your investment and leave the extra.  Grin Goodluck to that man hope bitcoin meets your expectation.

He stated he's up 50%, that puts his buy-in point about USD 466/btc. +50% in 2 years is decent if you ask me.

Nah, his buy-in was somewhere in the low to mid-600s, the reason for the discrepancy is the depreciation of the Canadian dollar.

Glad the holder didn't sell when it was "dying" but indeed profited from what BTC did recently. All the best for this dude in future to come

Does anybody know what the price of Bitcoin was when this person sold their house? I want to know if they made a good decision or not and I think that they have probably held onto it for all this time even through the lower prices so...
