Just checking back today.

** Update **

I am still around.

I still have all my bitcoin.

If you check the original posting from 2 years ago, I did indeed sell my house for Bitcoin, and there are links to the actual news articles.

I currently live in Toronto now, and rent a house with friends.

The price of Bitcoin is currently at close to $700US or $900 CDN.

My original investment is worth $598,000 CDN.

My initial investment is up nearly 50% since I purchased Bitcoin 2 years ago.

Cheers,

Tay More

Does anybody know what the price of Bitcoin was when this person sold their house? I want to know if they made a good decision or not and I think that they have probably held onto it for all this time even through the lower prices so...

i always see this topic gets bumped up from time to time and i have only read the comments so far, and i have to say i doubt if anybody is foolish enough to go all in on an investment like bitcoin.
it is good and profitable but it is also risky and investing all means losing big even with a small drop!
You only must be wrong. From the past performance of bitcoin's growth, definitely we can assume the history is going to repeat to bring us more profits for whatever amount we are going to invest with it. So, this is not wrong in my view to invest ALL into bitcoin ecosystem.

You are right in one point. At the same none is sure that only increase in price happens on halving. For this reason investing everything into the bitcoin ecosystem might get you into trouble at times.

haven't really been following the price that closely.
RIP.

Well it looks like my $400K investment is going to make me a millionaire very soon.
1-2 millions is not a lot of money these days, but sure, soon.

1-2 million is not alot of money these days?

Im sorry but you should jump off a bridge, who is this guy?
Do you have 2 million,do you even own bitcoin. Wait I don't need a answer,I already have it.

Well, you dont need to be a millionaire to say 1 million isn't a lot anymore.

It really isn't.

You can maybe buy a decent house and a decent car, and then you're out of money. You can't even buy a mansion. There's plenty of people with houses that cost several tens of millions.

Sure, I'd like to have a million as much as the next guy, but a million is not as much as you'd think.

So let me get this straight.
You acquire 1million dollars and your ambition is gone? You just buy a house and a car?

You sound like a bum dude, definitely no business man with that mentality.
If I had a million dollars I would turn it into 5 million dollars. Why stop at a million? And yes a million is just as much as I think. It would kick start a business and give you the finest resources to maximize the profit potential. I shouldn't have to explain this to you.

you are totally misinterpreting my words.

What i'm saying is that a million dollars is not a lot, if you start spending it, you'll run out soon, so even if i had a million dollars, i'd be careful how i'd spend it.

investing it is a smart thing to do, because you can't really rely on just 1 million alone.

a lot of people seem to think that if you have 1 million you can buy whatever you want and never run out of money, but that's simply not true. Not even close, because you'll run out quickly.

If you invest and get yourself an income, you can do so much more, especially if you use it responsibly. But I wouldn't spend a lot of money on luxury goods if all i had was just 1 million.

Also, if  had a house to sell, i'd probably sell it too at this point and just rent a small apartment.

You'd be crazy to believe bitcoin would not rise.

Hell it's probably even worth it to take a loan and invest the whole loan in bitcoin. Risky, sure, but might be worth it.

I wish I had a house to sell too... would buy everything I can when we are at 300 again this summer Smiley

You might meet the same fate as the OP.... Huge paper losses.  Smiley
If you go all in in Bitcoin than you have to be for sure that you must make some profit with it otherwise you are losing a lot of money with it and than you became poor.
So that must now happen so it is one of the most risky thing that you can do with your life to go all in.

I think it doesn't matter how sure you are because first of all you will never be 100% sure and it can go wrong at any time. also going all in means you are risking everything you own and this profit is not going to happen overnight and it will take some time. it can be one month or it can be one year that you put all your money (as OP says selling house) in an investment for a long time and stay up all night with the stress of losing or not losing it all every day.

He obviously is living somewhere else, possibly his partner already had a house or something like that.  The house was inherited explains a large part of why the sale took place as is often the case, assets are sold not kept when its duplicated.
If this is someone who wants to move around the world, having bitcoin a global currency could be a smart move longer term though its obviously risky.  He seems to have been smart enough not to be a forced seller in recent lows, hopefully he'll get his money back and more just when he needs it.   I think nearer to retirement is his gameplan

That is not a good thing to go all in and even sell your house now if you lose then you have nothing left. Your house is the most important thing that you can buy in this world so I suggest that you get it back as soon as possible.

If the bitcoin price is just around $500 in August and September, it is better to buy and wait for the rise.

it looks like the starter of the topic was meaning to just troll but actually i think at the current state of the market it would be a good idea to go big in bitcoin and invest what you can (obviously not everything you own) because of the recent decrease.

No he really did sell his house for Bitcoins. That link in the OP is for real. Here's two more links about Taylor More who made history as the first person to sell his house for Bitcoins.

https://www.rt.com/news/house-for-sale-bitcoins-781/

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/man-offers-to-sell-house-for-bitcoins/

It's the same guy as in the cbc story from the OP.

Hi All,

I have been following Bitcoin for over a year and was the first person ever to put my house for sale for bitcoin.
