Just encountered this news - "DuckDuckGo blocked in Indonesia over ..., gambling search results." which has dropped a bomb on me. I have never been in this country and always thought it is loyal to gambling. But it seems to be not. How does the matter lie at present? I wonder this because of my plans to visit Indonesia for a couple of weeks and when visiting countries for the first time  I commonly show myself  round the local casinos.
The role of every government has always been to maintain the sanity of law and order in that region where they govern, so with this news about "DuckduckGo" a search engine been block in the entire Indonesia region doesn't stop you from exploring the place, if only you have had a genuine reason why you want to travel to that country, because just as been said in the article link you provided above, i'm very sure that with the help of VPN and other browsers such as Brave and Chrome, you can still be able to navigate through your usual gambling platforms during your few stau in that region. Because gambling is not the only reason why "DuckduckGo" is been banned in Indonesia, the high rate of porn search within that area is another reason that prompted that action, been a Muslim dominated region.

So, it's possible that they'd do something to bypass that and still able to continue their gambling activities.

Yeah, many people are doing it. I honestly didn't know their government has such stance on gambling until someone mentioned it because I've been seeing many indonesian in crypto gambling community lol.

Another reason why this move from indo government is poop. Imagine blocking a pretty useful website just so you can hamper down gamblers who will easily just gamble anyhow. But I guess, this probably has to do more for their report submission or smth.
That only means that many of them are defying their government ruling about online gambling and they're bypassing it.

It's just sad that many countries sees gambling as something negative where it can contribute to their own economy. Just always give that tip to the players that they should do it moderately.

But if this is the kind of action that they wanna do, no one can be against them but still able to continue their gambling activities wherever they are and use some VPN.

One thing we may not know as well is about the policies and law that guides each countries, some were friendly and some were not, depending on the kind of government in place as at that moment, secondly, these same laws are subjected to review at anytime, which also tells us more on how they can make changes to anything as they like at anytime, gambling is not what we should be surprised at when things like these were behold, we should have known that all countries don't totally go in support of it.

Regarding gambling in Indonesia, it is very strict and everything will be blocked.
Even now, many Online Bookies have begun to be arrested and the disclosure of local casino houses that have finally been dissolved.

Indonesia does prohibit gambling and actively eradicates it.
But it is not effective when there are individuals who do receive payments and the gambling business is also still running.

You can visit Indonesia and go on vacation, but don't expect the gambling atmosphere you want, you won't find it in Indonesia.
Local gambling is still around, it is covert and unofficial, and it is more risky for foreign nationals.

As far as I know, Indonesia is actually a Muslim country. There are many Muslim groups in this country, according to my research. So if that's what the country of Indonesia did, they have jurisdiction to do that.
You are right about that, the state of Indonesia is the country with the largest Islamic majority and opposes all types of gambling and has full jurisdiction to prohibit gambling. But of course for some types of online gambling there are still many and this is illegal.

The government of a country is like that; whatever they want to do, it is really necessary to obey that government, and we as abiding citizens must obey.
And probably, there are still some legal gambling operates legally I guess.

Not only in crypto gambling community, I can even say that the number of Indonesian gamblers who gamble with fiat is much bigger.
Based on the latest local news which can be said as the reason why the government did the thing as mentioned by OP, is because there are more than 80k under 10 years old, more than 400k teen (from 10-20years old), more than 500k adults (21-30years old), and more than 3 million people (above 30yo) who are involved in online gambling.
Of course the past pandemic increased this number significantly, maybe the number was less before pandemic and it started to increase significantly during pandemic till now.

To inform that DuckDuckGo search engine has been blocked in Indonesia due to certain gambling demands sheds light on how strict their approaches toward online content regulation, including gambling, are. Its gambling laws are among the most severe in the world, a fact serving as a mirror image of the broad cultural and, correspondingly, legal stand of the country. In highly secretive Indonesia, gambling is illegal both online and offline. This is because the country has a huge percentage of its population who are Muslims, and gambling is considered haram—war—in Islamic laws.

The DuckDuckGo case points out that Indonesian authorities are very active in regulating and controlling the nature of content available within their borders, especially gambling-related content. The move is in parallel with broader efforts directed at enforcing local laws and regulations on online content. If you are to visit Indonesia and have a desire to wager or participate in any form of gambling, be informed that such legal opportunities are very few. Most of the forms of gambling are prohibited, and the enforcers of the law do not go easy on the rules at all. Rather, you might like to look up all the other means through which the Indonesian culture has a lot in store for you concerning all the varying forms of diversion that do not violate the laws or any custom either.

For my point of view, it is always a good idea for travelers to be familiar with local laws and cultural norms to ensure a respectful and enjoyable visit. Indonesia offers a rich and rewarding experience with a focus on cultural icons, natural beauty and local cuisine.

You have not researched the country; if it is a Muslim country or the dominant religion is Muslim, expect restrictions on everything that is forbidden. Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim country, so it's your choice if you still want to proceed with visiting Indonesia to try out their land-based casinos, if there are any.
Indonesia is one of the countries worth visiting in the South East. Although it does not have casinos, it does have many historical places, foods, and entertainment.

DuckDuckGo should have updated its preferences for its Indonesian users so they can continue to tap the Indonesian markets; Google is quick to do so because it knows Indonesians are heavy internet users.

If gambling is banned in Indonesia, which I think is the case, then you should not be surprised if they take actions to limit their citizens access to information related to gambling. These actions might not completely stop people from gambling but it has a way of limiting how much people know about gambling in such country. However, this does not stop you from visiting the country since you are not going there for gambling related activities. Just ensure you take a break from gambling for the period you will be in that country to avoid getting into trouble; I know it will be difficult but you have to try and play safe.

AFAIK, Indonesia has majority of its religion in Islam and that might have affected this law about blocking popular gambling results.

I haven't been there as well but in Asia, there are countries that don't allow to gamble online. But some allows gambling to happen inside their jurisdiction but only for the foreigners and not locals.

So, religion always affects the decision about banning and blocking gambling related things.

That's my take here also on this situation. The religion is the major contributor on why their government is banning gambling and of course their laws towards gambling, which has been said that they are considering gambling and all forms of it, online or offline, as illegal.

"The ban on gambling in Indonesia is rooted in Law No. 7 Year 1974 about Gambling (UU No. 7 Tahun 1974 tentang Perjudian), which was enacted on November 6, 1974. This law prohibits any activity related to gambling."

Therefore, it is understandable that they will ban even the search on gambling as they are not tolerating gambling, consumption of alcohol and other illegal activities owed to their faith.
All of those activities that are said to be not allowed by their religion is most likely going to cover all of those.

That's understandable and okay in all terms if that's what their government believes to be rightful. But here, we know that not all of the citizens there have the same religion.

So, it's possible that they'd do something to bypass that and still able to continue their gambling activities.

Since the past, gambling has always been restricted in Indonesia. And this is stated in the law, Article 27, Paragraph (2), of Law Number 1 of 2024. So, there is no bargaining for that.

Even the sanctions are very firm and clear, as conveyed by the Minister.
Quote
“Everyone involved in online gambling will face legal consequences. This action is a tangible effort to eliminate the negative impact of online gambling on the general public,” the Minister said during a press conference on the handling of online gambling, in Jakarta, Tuesday (08/08).

That is why the government, through Kominfo and other institutions, is trying to block all advertisements and online casinos in our country. Although it may not be 100% successful because every individual always has a way to do it.

Atleast this time when you visit Indonesia, you’ll get to sit and visit other tourist sites rather than casinos(stop testing gambling skills in every country 😂😂)
But I don’t know why Indonesia government is getting really strict with gambling and blocking every search engine from giving gambling result is already a great show that gambling is totally prohibited and you should please take it off your mind atleast for the first time you intend visiting the country so as to stay on the safer side.

It seems you travel a lot
I don’t mind going with you 🤦🏽

Unfortunately you will not find any legal land based casino in Indonesia because all forms of gambling are prohibited here.
If someone invite you to play at an illegal land based casino here, it's better not to do that because it could bring complicated problems for you if the police caught you there.
And if you play online on a phone, I suggest not to do it in public places, and you also have to prepare a VPN or change DNS when using a cellular/wifi network because everything has been blocked by the internet providers here.

The headline says ban for showing porn and gambling but you omit that aspect. I'm not sure if gambling is going to be the primary reason why they ban the gambling search result but even if it is, the porn must have been the reason for the ban. Another reason could be they don't charge citizens from their earning and since it doesn't benefits the nation, they look for a way to reduce the effect on people.

Just know that gambling and porn are two addiction that many people suffer from. Children within the range of teen and adolescents stage suffer from porn addiction and if they are exposed to early gambling, majority of them get addicted to gambling due to peer pressure from friends trying to leave above their means and look for money to get things that are impossible.

As far as casinos in Indonesia are concerned, currently no legal casinos, poker rooms, betting shops, bingo halls, etc. run in Indonesia. Even a state lottery run by the government of Indonesia was shut down due to a protest by the Muslim community.

Maybe it's a surprise for you, but there's nothing strange here. Indonesia is not the only country where gambling is prohibited, but people always find an alternative, online or some illegal betting houses. So if you are planning to visit Indonesia, you will have to settle for some other beauties of that country, and maybe if you have some friends there they can show you some secret casinos, that can be a real adventure.

I have also visited the local casinos on some trips, but not in recent years. And I don't have any particular desire for it, I like gambling from my laptop and in crypto casinos... I don't plan to change that. Even when I go on a trip I always have my laptop with me and if I want to gamble I just open one of my favorite sites.

Gambling and pornography are illegal in most Muslim areas; it will be better if some of the citizens here can shed more light on how seriously they take this, and in such a country, I doubt if you can ever find a legal land-based casino there that you can visit.
Yes this could be true because most of the Muslim countries prohibited pornography and gambling ads to be promoted openly, as I know they are too strict on their laws and for that if there are site maybe browser that carrys more information about what they don't support it would be very easy to shut down or restrictions her citizens to have direct access to it.
Howeve, op you could try to visit any other countries that could be more better or more friendly to gambling/cryptocurrency at large otherwise it could affect your gambling exercise.

You should maybe do more research before making big assumptions about a country then, as it has a heavily Muslim population and gambling is generally frowned upon in that religion - why do you think that they would be "loyal to gambling"? In fact, why do you think any country would be "loyal" to gambling? It is generally associated with trouble making behavior, because while the casinos contribute tax revenues the users who lose money are often the poorest and most desperate in society. Now, whether it is fair for them to block a whole search engine because they disagree with some results, that seems like censorship taken too far, but it's up to the people to overthrow their government if they really wanted more openness and change.
