Criminal Investigation Sought Into Hillary Clinton’s Emails

Justice Department asked to consider a criminal investigation due to concerns about mishandling of classified information

WASHINGTON—An internal government review of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email archive has revealed that hundreds of those messages contain potentially classified information.

Due to concerns about the potential mishandling of classified information on Mrs. Clinton’s personal email server, the inspectors general for the Department of State and intelligence community have asked the Justice Department to consider a criminal investigation, a Justice Department official said.

A memorandum from both inspectors general viewed by The Wall Street Journal found that an investigation discovered “hundreds of potentially classified emails within the collection” of Mrs. Clinton’s emails.

The inspectors general also found that at least one of Mrs. Clinton’s emails already publicly released on the State Department’s website contained apparent classified information.

Mrs. Clinton “followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials. As has been reported on multiple occasions, any released emails deemed classified by the administration have been done so after the fact, and not at the time they were transmitted,” a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton said.

News of the request for a potential criminal investigation was first reported by the New York Times.

New York Times alters Clinton email story

The New York Times made small but significant changes to an exclusive report about a potential criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton's State Department email account late Thursday night, but provided no notification of or explanation for of the changes.

The paper initially reported that two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation "into whether Hillary Rodham Clinton mishandled sensitive government information on a private email account she used as secretary of state."

That clause, which cast Clinton as the target of the potential criminal probe, was later changed: the inspectors general now were asking for an inquiry "into whether sensitive government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account Hillary Rodham Clinton used as secretary of state."

The Times also changed the headline of the story, from "Criminal Inquiry Sought in Hillary Clinton’s Use of Email" to "Criminal Inquiry Is Sought in Clinton Email Account," reflecting a similar recasting of Clinton's possible role. The article's URL was also changed to reflect the new headline.

As of early Friday morning, the Times article contained no update, notification, clarification or correction regarding the changes made to the article.

One of the reporters of the story, Michael Schmidt, explained early Friday that the Clinton campaign had complained about the story to the Times.

“It was a response to complaints we received from the Clinton camp that we thought were reasonable, and we made them,” Schmidt said.

Nick Merrill, a spokesman for Clinton, said in an email that Clinton always followed “appropriate practices.”

“Contrary to the initial story, which has already been significantly revised, she followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials. As has been reported on multiple occasions, any released emails deemed classified by the administration have been done so after the fact, and not at the time they were transmitted,” Merrill said.

The inspectors general request comes after their assessment that Clinton’s private email account contained “hundreds of potentially classified emails.” The Times' report notes that it is not clear whether the contents of the emails were marked as classified by the State Department when then-Secratry of State Clinton sent or received them.

Clinton's use of a private email account at the State Department has been a subject of intense scrutiny by both the media and Republican adversaries for months. No news outlet has been more aggressive in its coverage of that issue than the Times.

The Times' report also includes the following error: It states that a hearing in Washington about the State Department's refusal to respond to Freedom of Information Act requests had taken place on Monday. That hearing took place last week.

Krauthammer on Hillary: "The More You See Her, The More Her Numbers Go Down. That's The Definition Of A Weak Candidate."

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: It's not just that she doesn't have an opponent, she still doesn't have real opponents who are going to challenge her for the nomination in the end. But we have gotten to see her. And it turns out that the more you see her, the more her numbers go down. That's the definition of a weak candidate.

I think what was astonishing in some of those polls, when they ran the Republicans against Bernie Sanders, not exactly the second coming of Ronald Reagan or FDR, in sort of attractiveness, he does better. That tells you that the Democrats have a problem. Somebody who is not going to be tested and who is going to have to learn to do it. Once she gets the nomination it's up against a single opponent.

Clintons Facilitated Donor’s Haiti Project That Defrauded U.S. Out of Millions

Hillary Clinton Donor Claudio Osorio’s InnoVida bilked investors out of $40 million

A federal agency rushed to approve funding for a Clinton donor’s sham Haiti recovery project that ended up defrauding the U.S. government out of millions, according to court transcripts and internal government documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Miami businessman Claudio Osorio, who is currently serving 12 years in federal prison on fraud charges, leveraged his relationship with Bill and Hillary Clinton to help his company InnoVida obtain a $10 million loan from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) for a Haiti housing project in 2010.

OPIC is an independent government agency that submits its annual budget requests through the State Department and works closely with the agency.

Bill Clinton helped arrange for a high-powered Florida law firm to represent Osorio during loan negotiations with OPIC, according to court testimony. An internal OPIC memo said Hillary Clinton was prepared to marshal State Department resources to assist with the donor’s project.

InnoVida was supposed to use the funding to build houses in Haiti after the earthquake, but it defaulted on the loan and the homes were never built.

After InnoVida went bankrupt in 2011, a court-appointed investigator said it appeared that over $30 million of its funds had been diverted to foreign bank accounts and were not retrievable.

Osorio was later accused of using the company to run a Ponzi-like scheme, bilking government and private investors out of a collective $40 million and using their money to fund his lavish lifestyle—making payments on his Miami Beach mansion, buying a Maserati and maintaining his Colorado ski chalet.

He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering in 2013.

Much of the media coverage of InnoVida has focused on Jeb Bush’s involvement as a consultant and board member. But previously unreported government documents and testimony from the 2013 fraud trial of InnoVida’s chief financial officer reveal that Osorio’s relationship with the Clintons played a central role in InnoVida’s efforts to obtain OPIC funding for the house-building scam.

The OPIC official who helped approve the InnoVida loan wrote in a 2010 internal memo that “secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, has made available State Department resources to assist with logistical arrangements” for the project and “Former president Bill Clinton is personally in contact with the company [InnoVida] to organize its logistical and support needs.”

The memo added that the Clinton Global Initiative had agreed to purchase “6500 homes in Haiti from InnoVida within the next year.”

During the loan process, Osorio repeatedly emphasized his connections to the Clintons during conversations with OPIC officials, boasting about taking a trip to Haiti with the former president after the earthquake and telling an OPIC manager that he had a direct line to Hillary Clinton.

He also brought members of the Clintons’ inner circle on board with the project. InnoVida brought on Jonathan Mantz, Hillary Clinton’s 2008 finance director and currently the senior financial adviser at the Clinton-supporting Priorities USA PAC, to lobby OPIC for the loan. The company’s board included Chris Korge, a top Clinton moneyman who has raised millions for them, and close ally Gen. Wesley Clark.

InnoVida also retained top Florida law firm Shutts & Bowen to help negotiate the loan agreement with OPIC.

An attorney at Shutts & Bowen testified that Bill Clinton asked the firm to represent InnoVida in the negotiations. One of the Clintons’ top bundlers, Alexander Heckler, was a partner at the law group.

A spokesperson for Hillary Clinton did not respond to request for comment.

OPIC officials denied in court testimony that they approved the loan under political pressure. They also said they never tried to verify Osorio’s claims that the Clintons were assisting him with the Haiti project, even after OPIC used this information to justify the loan approval and began dispensing millions of dollars to his company.

InnoVida’s loan request was approved by OPIC after just two weeks. The process typically takes months or years, agency officials testified. The loan was also approved before InnoVida had turned over its financial statements.

In a rare move, OPIC waived a requirement that the company provide an independently audited financial report up-front, even though Osorio had previously run a company that was sued for manipulating its stock prices.

The National Legal and Policy Center, a government watchdog group that has spent months investigating the documents related to this case, told the Free Beacon that it was “a textbook example of a corrupt pay-to-play scheme” and called for an investigation of OPIC.

“This case represents a new low in the misuse of public funds by Clinton allies,” said NLPC chairman Ken Boehm. “There must be an investigation into why this Clinton donor was using a law firm recommended by Bill Clinton and one of Hillary Clinton’s top fund raisers to improperly obtain millions from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.”

A spokesperson for OPIC did not respond to request for comment.

Osorio’s relationship with the Clintons dates back to at least 2007. That fall, Osorio hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign at his Star Island mansion in Miami Beach. Bill Clinton gave a speech at the event and “explain[ed] to an audience that Osorio planned to build 10,000 houses at $5,000 apiece for impoverished Haitians,” according to an NPR report.

Osorio contributed between $10,000 and $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation in 2009. His company InnoVida followed up with another $10,000 to $25,000 donation. The foundation returned the money in 2013, after a court-appointed receiver sued to recover funds for swindled investors.

InnoVida approached OPIC in late 2009 through its lobbyist Mantz, according to an OPIC email. Initially the company said it wanted the loan to build a panel manufacturing facility in Haiti. OPIC reportedly expressed interest in the idea, but InnoVida allegedly neglected to pay a $20,000 retainer and dropped out of contact that December.

On Jan. 13, 2010, the day after the earthquake in Haiti, Osorio reached out again to OPIC’s renewable energy director Lynn Tabernacki, this time with a proposal to build houses on the island.

After that discussion, Tabernacki said her team rushed to approve the project, working “day and night and weekends to make sure that we followed all of our credit policies and procedures to get it done as quickly as possible.”

Tabernacki helped InnoVida’s chief finance officer write the loan application, telling him in a Jan. 19 email to “[p]lease let me know when you’ve finished so that I can immediately send it to our policy group.”

Two days later, Tabernacki and another OPIC official flew to Miami to visit the InnoVida offices. During the meeting, Osorio reiterated to Tabernacki he was in close contact with Bill Clinton and that he had Hillary Clinton’s “ear” at the State Department.

Five days later, on Jan. 26, Tabernacki sent a memo to her supervisors at OPIC requesting approval for the InnoVida loan.

She wrote that InnoVida was “well placed to support the recovery efforts in Haiti,” noting its relationship with the Clinton Global Initiative and “U.S. persons of political influence that are able to assist in advancing the company’s plans.”

“Former president Bill Clinton is personally in contact with the company to organize its logistical and support needs,” added Tabernacki. “[InnoVida board member] Wesley Clark is arranging for military transport of the initial structural panels. Steven Green (former CEO of Samsonite Corporation and former ambassador to Singapore) will provide barge space on ocean vessels, when necessary, to ship the factory components. And secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, has made available State Department resources to assist with logistical arrangements.”

Tabernacki later testified that this memo was based on claims from Osorio, and she did not take any steps to corroborate the information. However, she said the part about Hillary Clinton was accurate.

“The Hillary Clinton aspect was true, because at that point, we had—not myself, but there were others within OPIC that had been making arrangements with the State Department for the activities that were going on the ground [in Haiti],” said Tabernacki.

InnoVida was the only company to receive an OPIC loan for a Haiti-related project in 2010, according to the agency’s annual report.

Senior OPIC officials green-lighted the InnoVida loan the same day Tabernacki sent the approval request. At the time, the company had yet to turn over any financial statements. Lawyers for OPIC and InnoVida had still not negotiated certain contractual terms.

While OPIC typically requires companies to turn over audited financial information before receiving a loan, it granted InnoVida a six-month extension. The company turned over an unaudited financial statement—reportedly based on questionable numbers—on January 28, two days after the loan was approved.

Tabernacki testified that the agency expedited the approval process because it was trying to expand relief efforts in Haiti after the earthquake.

The defense attorney who cross-examined Tabernacki was not available to comment because he died shortly after the case ended. His client, InnoVida’s CFO Craig Toll, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the company.

The NLPC said an investigation into OPIC is necessary.

“When a criminal like Osorio steals money meant for earthquake victims, the public is entitled to answers,” said Boehm.

Hillary Clinton sounds the alarm on meteorites

Hillary Clinton on Thursday called attention to a dire security threat: meteorites.

Speaking before a town hall in New Hampshire, the Democratic front-runner said experts should be mapping meteorites and asteroids “on a security basis,” noting the importance of scientific research and development in stimulating the U.S. economy.

“You know, back in the early ’90s, our country invested in mapping the human genome, and my husband was president when it finally was revealed. Money had been put in by both Republican and Democratic presidents and Congresses because we wanted to know more about what this meant. And in the years since, hundreds and thousands of jobs have been created and many millions of dollars have been generated for our economy,” Clinton said.

A peek inside Hillary’s Brooklyn HQ
Hillary Clinton’s campaign said media visits to the office are now welcomed. POLITICO took them up on the offer.

[...]
The original policy of prohibiting journalists from reporting on the campaign headquarters, she said, was misinterpreted as overly controlling. “When people come in for meetings, you want the operation to continue to function and that if something is overheard, or a memo is seen, it’s not going to get reported on,” Palmieri said. “It seems like that was received the wrong way.”

The Clinton campaign signed a lease on the 11th floor of 1 Pierrepont Plaza in Brooklyn Heights last April, and the campaign will expand to occupy a second floor in October.

Visitors are required to sign in on an iPad, and sign a confidentiality agreement. “You agree not to disclose any Confidential information or any information derived therefrom to any third person” and to “take all reasonable precautions to protect the confidentiality of such Confidential Information with the highest degree of care,” the statement reads.

By 10 a.m. Thursday, the open-plan office was teeming with staffers, volunteers and interns, many wearing official Clinton campaign apparel. Campaign manager Robby Mook and other senior officials were in their daily senior staff meeting when POLITICO arrived to photograph the office.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton's standing is falling among Democrats, and voters view her as less decisive and inspiring than when she launched her presidential campaign just three months ago, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

The survey offers a series of warning signs for the leading Democratic candidate. Most troubling, perhaps, for her prospects are questions about her compassion for average Americans, a quality that fueled President Barack Obama's two White House victories.

Just 39 percent of all Americans have a favorable view of Clinton, compared to nearly half who say they have a negative opinion of her. That's an eight-point increase in her unfavorable rating from an AP-GfK poll conducted at the end of April.

The drop in Clinton's numbers extends into the Democratic Party. Seven in 10 Democrats gave Clinton positive marks, an 11-point drop from the April survey. Nearly a quarter of Democrats now say they see Clinton in an unfavorable light.

"I used to like her, but I don't trust her," said Donald Walters of Louisville, Kentucky. "Ever since she's announced her candidacy for the presidency I just haven't liked the way she's handled things. She doesn't answer questions directly."

While Clinton's approval rating fell, Obama's stayed constant at 46 percent since April. More than 8 in 10 Democrats have a positive view of the president.

At least part of Clinton's decline may be due to questions about her character, a topic Republicans have been trying to make central to the 2016 campaign. In ads, stump speeches and online videos, they paint her as a creature of Washington who flouts the rules to get ahead.

Teachers Revolt Over Union’s Endorsement Of Hillary Clinton

For a union built on democracy, activist teachers are wondering how the American Federation of Teachers could have possibly endorsed Hillary Clinton for president without them knowing about it.

Candi Peterson, Washington (D.C.) Teachers’ Union, penned an article at Common Dreams in which several die-hard union activists appeared to be utterly befuddled by the national union’s sudden announcement.

Chicago activist Katie Osgood says, “I know many AFT members too and have not heard one person polled either.” The union claimed it polled members on their opinions.

According to the calculation of “Mr. Stevens,” only .04 percent of members were surveyed.

Hillary blasts GOP rivals as 'mean-spirited' in economic policy speech

Outlining her economic agenda in a speech Monday, Hillary Clinton took aim at her Republican rivals for what she described as "mean-spirited" policies.

Clinton advocated for the middle class and a higher minimum wage as part of her "new economic reform" on Monday morning while calling out Republican candidates like Jeb Bush for being stuck in the past.

The Democratic front-runner took her first shot at Bush's comment that Americans need to work more hours. The former Florida governor had been talking about the difficulty some Americans face in getting full-time work, but the statement has been wisely interpreted as suggesting people aren't working hard enough.

"Well, he must not have met very many American workers," Clinton said to the New York City crowd. "Let him tell that to the nurse who stands on her feet all day or the teacher who is in that classroom, or the trucker who drives all night. Let him tell that to the fast-food workers marching in the streets for better pay. They don't need a lecture. They need a raise."

Dem Strategist Hangs Up on TV Host When Strongly Pressed on Hillary’s ‘Never Had a Subpoena’ Claim

Longtime Democratic strategist and Hillary Clinton ally Lanny Davis abruptly ended an interview on NewsmaxTV Friday after host Steve Malzberg aggressively pressed him on the former secretary of state’s claim that she “never had a subpoena” related to her emails.

The interview started tense and never recovered.

“I hate to do this to you because you’ve usually been pretty civil and fair,” Davis began. “You said you were going to start with a question and answer, and you didn’t…Then what you did is play a clip of her answer, exactly what Trey Gowdy has done — and this is Steve Malzman at his worst.”

Hillary's long time "aid" Huma Abedin was asked how Hillary's pussy tastes.

Her Answer?

Depends.

That's not funny! That's unacceptable!

We finally have a chance for an accomplished woman to break through the glass ceiling and become president, and this is the kind of personal attack she has to face.

So what if she is an old lesbian? Is there something wrong with that? And so what if she's incontinent and has to wear adult diapers. This is a natural part of life and getting older, and I, for one, hope we as a nation are beyond discriminating against someone like Hillary simply because she no longer has voluntary control over her urine flow.

I have the same opinion about the other personal attacks on this thread. Has every other former Secretary of State been held to this high standard? Did anyone ask where they stored their emails? Were they attacked this harshly simply because they played a significant role in getting U.S. diplomats killed and then covered it up? Those people asking Hillary about the years-old story of Benghazi at this point might as well be screaming iron my shirt!

And not only is she being attacked simply because of things she did while in office, she's even being attacked for things she said, simply because of positions she may or may not have had in the past and positions she may or may not have now. What difference does it make where her positions are? I'm glad she's avoiding interviews where these "journalists" are waiting with their sexist trick questions intended to get her to state her positions.

I think Hillary will be a great president. She's a woman, a democrat and a Clinton, and that's good enough for me.

Hillary Clinton Dominates The Pack … In Fake Twitter Followers

What's the biggest difference between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's Twitter followers? His are real.

When it comes to fake Twitter followers, Hillary Clinton is winning the presidential race by a landslide. Clinton has more fake followers and a higher ratio of bogus Twitter fans than any of the other main 2016 presidential contenders, a Vocativ analysis shows.

On the other end of the scale, the candidates with the lowest percentage of fake Twitter followers are Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. Contrary to what one might guess from his reputation for extravagant self-promotion, Trump’s 2.6 million Twitter followers are 90 percent real people. Only 311,388 were deemed fake by the analysis using the tool TwitterAudit.

Bernie Sanders was tied for the highest ratio of authentic followers—90 percent of his 300,000-plus followers are real people. Then comes Gov. Jeb Bush with 89% of his followers registering as real. On the bottom of the Twitter list is Clinton, with a whopping 35 percent of her 2.3 million Twitter followers coming up as fake.

TwitterAudit, a social media analysis tool, says on its website that it judges a Twitter account’s authenticity based on its number of tweets, the date of its last tweet and the ratio of its followers to friends. The fake Twitter accounts can be bots, which are accounts run by automated software programming. They can also be accounts created by real people but with an agenda of spreading political advertisements. But under both scenarios, they are certainly not a genuine measure of candidate popularity.

We see this indignation at being asked questions over and over and over from this woman.

It's as if nobody has the right to question anything.  Not even the press should ask her any questions about anything actually relevant.

She is Hillary the Great and the peons should just shut up and let her keep right on doing whatever she feels like.  Above the law, beyond reproach and without an ounce of sense of responsibility for anything she has said, done, lied about or anything else.

She thinks she's royalty, that much is obvious, at least to me, and couldn't give a shit about anyone but herself.

Rand Paul: Hillary Clinton Was Lying to Congress on Benghazi

Senator Rand Paul: I find it very hard to believe that Hillary Clinton didn’t know. In fact, she was the biggest cheerleader for sending these arms and redistributing these arms. And the reason why this is an important issue, many of the people who received these arms are not friends to America. Many of them are linked to al-Qaeda, al-Nusra. Some of these weapons may well have ended up in the hands of those who became ISIS. So this is no small fact…

…I don’t think our public officials should be able to come before Congressional committees and lie. But it’s also concerning because the big problem we face with ISIS, did it have anything to do with Hillary Clinton arming people who either became ISIS or are friends or allies with ISIS.

Bill Hemmer: Do you think she was lying? Is that what you’re saying, senator?

Rand Paul: I think there’s a very good chance. Because I think there is no way that Hillary Clinton did not know about this. Her private emails show she was the one supporting these people.

Hillary Campaign Holding Workshops For Supporters To Work On Ways To “Help Humanize Her”…

…Kathy Sullivan, a Democratic National Committee member from New Hampshire who attended the training, said it helped her “talk about the Hillary Clinton we know.” The session included a workshop in which supporters turned to the supporters sitting next to them and practiced sharing anecdotes about Clinton that help humanize her.

“We would each tell a personal story about Hillary Clinton that is an example of the qualities about her that make her attractive as a candidate. as opposed to listing a lot of policy positions,” Sullivan said.
