In my opinion, profitability is not based on whether the project had an IEO or ICO. It's based on the several other factors. IEO carried out in global exchange like binance, bittrex, etc tends to be more successful than those carried out in lesser exchanges.
For IEO it seems like a short-term investment because after a few days, prices usually start to fall after an increase. In my opinion, IEO might be a good alternative as a short-term investment but not all IEOs are good and profitable and in my opinion it's better to invest in IEO held by large exchangers
What are your criteria to consider and IEO asset as long term?
There's no changes on the trend, even before when ICO was still popular, it could rise or fall as majority of the investors are looking for short term profit, however as we can see there are also altcoins which rise after years and they provided great return to investors, so as long as they still exist, they have a chance to grow in the long term as no team in a certain project that would start an IEO with short term plan only.

Because there are more and more active users, the chance of a successful project to launch IEO there will be greater than that of other exchangers. indeed for the time being IEO is better than ICO. but many rich people from investing in ICO in 2017.
and I see no IEO that is as exciting as the ICO before. but everything has a time, and for the time being I think IEO is safer
The excitement is different because both are not the same, maybe when the time comes the market is good again, which means people will be investing again that's the time we will see how IEO will be appreciated. 
As you know IEO trend is growing but i feel IEO is profitable only for those who invested in token sale but who have purchased altcoin after launched they suffer loss majority of the investors ,as the BTT and some other altcoin examples of IEO.
I mostly like IEO because for ICO we have to wait for long time that after finishing ICO token will come to market then profit or loss. But in IEO we can see present condition of market and if we include here roadmap plan of that company we can easily buy token in IEO or not.

IEO was supposed to bring hope to investors again after losing that much in ICOs. but as it is , some IEOs are not better than ICOs. they still scam investors and investors still lose money in IEO just like what was happening in ICO. the only different is that some IEO carried out on good Exchange like Binance gives investors good profits. but those on other useless exchanges do not go anywhere.
A few things that we need to know before to participate on that 2 kinds of funding a project, first we need to know if this is for a long term second if this is have a good product that can we use as a collateral so we can avoid the losses of money it is basic to know, But its hard to trust them because of a lots scammers around us. We need a hard decisions that we didn't suffer in the end.

I wouldn't suggest to invest in any ICO / IEO. Both are too risky, in exception of only if the founder is a well known business developer with positive results.
Therefore you have no plan on investing in a crowd sale.When you think of investing even not in a crowdsale, there is always a risk, you need to understand that as even using crypto as a tool for online transaction there's already risk on it.
If you have followed the status of the crowdsale, you can tell to yourself that ICO is phase out and IEO is the new or the future of crowdsale. actually there are already a lot of projects this year that has success on IEO.

In my opinion. IEO is more profitable than ICO. because there is already an IEO Exchange agreement so that investors are easy to invest so it has the potential to get satisfactory returns.
Only if its a guaranteed listing after the IEO ends and which exchange platform the IEO is being conducted, the more popular the exchange is the higher chance that it can be profitable.

If you compare IEO with ICO in 2017, the ICO will surely bring you more profits. In 2017 I invested a lot of ICOs and received a lot of profits. more than 50 times the amount invested, but through 2018 and 2019, a lot of scams appeared and caused the ICO to die.
