Before answering your question, I need to know what type of invest you wanna do short term or long term?
If you are gonna  for long term , it would be better to not go for alt-coin , select btc for long-term and now it's running in a good dip position.
On the others hand if you wanna trade short term with alt-coin  .Then select the top rows of alt coin without selecting more coins- such as bnb ,Etherium, matic, ltc. 12k isn't a small amount . You can make good profit by doing day trading by reading the candles

If I'm to select between the two, I'll go for option 2 because it has more assets and with the nature of the market. It would be impossible to accurately predict which projects would give the best return in the future. When it comes to investing in altcoin, diversification is better to spread risk and maximize potential returns.
why choose 2?, I prefer more than 2 and less than 10, maybe 5 is a good answer,
because we know the potential of altcoins which are certainly safe to invest,
I have a choice if you want and maybe you can consider it,1. BNB, 2. CRO, 3. VET, 4. IOTA, 5. IOST.
I like your list better than a lot of the other ones. It pains me to see people are still buying SOL. What do you think of IOTA vs IOST? I only hold IOTA. As to BNB and CRO, I would consider trading one of those for CNDL.

Option 1 is better.
But first I have to ask you, what is your goal?

1.) BTC
2.) ETH
3.) AVAX

It makes sense to put 3 of the 5 currencies in strong currencies.
But don't you want to try your luck on projects with 100x potential? Chiliz, polygon or shiba no longer have such potential. We are not in 2020.

You can divide your $12,000 into 6 parts.

1.)BTC
2.)ETH
3.)AVAX
4.) An Average Token (Chiliz etc.)
5.) Gem (For example; Curio Cards NFT)
6.) Ultra Gem (For example; Cardstack )

If you can't choose the gems well, you will make up for the loss if you do 2x from projects like BTC and ETH AVAX. If you choose the gems well, you will be rich.

Holding more number of coinseis upto the user. If the user finds it to be worthy, then he/she can make up the portfolio with more number of coins. Whatever we do, we need to make prior plans understanding the market. Every coin won't be moving on the bullish track. So, user needs to have a detailed plan. This will let the user have a portfolio strong without much disturbance even when the market isn't good.

option 1 I think it's enough to invest in those 5 coins, but can sol replace avax,
the reason I chose option 1 is because I'm not a coin collective type
it's also gonna be significantly easier to manage because sometimes too much diversification could result in bad management considering the fact that each altcoin have their own moments.
Instead sticking with fewer altcoin if the investment isn't that much makes a lot more sense financially speaking.
after all, even the big fund management if they invests in cryptocurrency usually they just choose eth or btc.

there's nothing wrong if you decide to hold more than 5 coins. but that is your prerogative and your choice. but as much as possible, it is best if you can keep up with their progress, each one of them. so you can avoid potential losses. because having so much coins will give you so much trouble if you are neglecting some of them because you have no time. if you haven't followed one of them, you may found out late that it is about to exit the market, and youre already too late about this.

From 12.000 USD, are you sure not including Bitcoin to prepare for the next bullish?
I think that the worthiest holding will be Bitcoin.
I will put at least minimally around $5k to buy Bitcoin.
Then, let a higher percentage for Ethereum and BNB.
Followed by some altcoins like:
Avalanche (AVAX)
Polygon (MATIC)
Solana (SOL)
The Sandbox (SAND)
And maybe add some to ADA?

Well it’s popular saying especially in terms of Crypto-currency investment and every other investments to always diversify that is to say get more coins under your wings, but still this isn’t a guarantee to getting good returns on investment especially when you spread your capital on the wrong coins personally I have seen people with diverse coins in their portfolio and they still ended up badly, that’s why research is the almighty rule.

It seems we have a mixed vote result here where both sides, 5 and 12 make sense in their own way. I think as long as both are carefully selected, I don't see why you have to limit your bag to just 5 or think 12 is too much.

If you really see a good coin, I would buy it!

Because why not buy it?

If you have done your research, you will know if it's a good coin or not.
So if you are sure, it is a good coin, buy it!

But you really need to do a good research, bro.

Having a lot of coins looks good, but having a few can minimize the risk of losing quickly.
I think there will be many options to choose from, you can choose more coins or just hold Bitcoin. profit is the main goal of investing, but you must be able to manage the time to see the coins you are holding so that there is no big loss, for example LUNA coins, I held this coin and planned to make a long term investment and in the end I lost because I thought the project this will work fine, my mistake was holding too many coins to focus on other coins.

I think the second option is better than the first, of the 12 coins in the second option, there are some coins that are not too dropped when the market is currently red, and I think the philosophy that spreading to many better places is right, there is always an unexpected surprise And by storing assets to many places will not be too stressed if there are coins that drop.

I will take the first option. The 5 coins on your list have proven to be in good fundamentals and there is no doubt about it. three of them are network projects that in the future are likely to become cryptocurrency projects with the greatest utility (already happened with ethereum). In the second option there are coins with a metaverse basis, unfortunately until now the metaverse has no evidence that it will be big in the future, therefore the second option has a greater risk than the first option.

It will usually depend on the market conditions whether it is better to invest in more coins or not if the prices of the currencies are good, it is possible to get more profit by investing in multiple coins. Bitcoin and ethereum are good currencies according to current market conditions even if the price goes down, it is likely to go up the guarantees for other currencies are lower.

I used to have 20 coins in my portfolio bag half of these are new coins coming from IEO and ICO, and my portfolio was almost wiped out, if you're not a whale it's better to invest in a small number, those coins with a proven record of profitability, a small number of coins that you can follow that can you can relax knowing what you're holding are already proven.
I wonder why you did not list Bitcoin, all coins depend on Bitcoin, when it crashes, the majority will also crash.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
It depends, varies, or subject to change. In the past I tend to stick with few options and likely all-in mindset, but this time I use to have different crypto in hand but altcoin should have a fewer percentage in my portfolio. The reason is that altcoins tend to go nosedive faster compare to Bitcoin and Ethereum or other alts that has low market cap.

The reason my portfolio is on Bitcoin the most is because of that reason. I have about 10+ on altcoins or even 15+ but that doesn't cover up my portfolio to even 50%, likely it was just around 30%.

Of course it depends on the situation, I don't want to suggest anything to you, I'm afraid that later you will blame me for following my advice, but what I'm doing right now is buying and investing in lots of coins, if there is a problem with 1 coin then we still have hope on the coin. other.
