He was unsure what he can achieve in Manchester United with available players and thought he can rely on Ronaldo in some matches or some early months of this season. There is nothing wrong with the player and the formation not matching - for example, Ibrahimovic was fired from Barcelona because of this and there was no talk of Ibrahimovic's bad form back then - he was cool but he didn't fit Guardiola's formation.

Both Ten Hag and Manchester United should be responsible for this drama too. They wanted to get lot of things from Ronaldo: income, goals and rejected to let him go. Now when they saw that Ronaldo is no longer useful for their club, they are ready to punish him.
