Mystery man has mysteriously vanished. Gone like a fart in the wind.

Perhaps he is doing maintenance and will be back or maybe gone. No clue, hopefully he say the light and will be back but to each their own if he decided to move on.

Meanwhile back in the CKDB world of sequence issues ... I'm now into trying different code changes to see what will resolve it.

The first one I'll try in about 5-10 minutes, coz I thought of it about half an hour ago and have now implemented it, and the next shift summarisation will be in the next 10 minutes - and be a short one like I usually plan for a restart.
Crossing my fingers in hope this solves it ... a timing issue caused by the threading actually being a lot faster (which it is of course) and causing the main sequence number to get further ahead in some cases.

As usual, a CKDB restart means no miners will be affected - just the web/api unavailable for about 10 minutes.

Edit: restart worked fine, resolved the sequence problem, but alas it showed up the actual cause of the sequence problem.
So, I've rolled it back, yet again, and the 2nd restart will complete in the next five minutes.
I'll code in the fix tomorrow and then do another restart then, i.e. avoid doing any more restarts until then.

Edit2: all complete - web/api all back online

but those numbers really say that it's most likely that either the GFW screwed us over or antpoo did.

I'm curious how the GFW would work in favor of antpoo, or by the same token, prevent our blocks from propagating faster (than antpoo's) across the network. Pardon my naivety on this. I would have expected their blocks to be relayed slower and thus lose the race.
They confirmed their block.
... and just to add some more details:
An orphan isn't known until the block after an orphan race.
The next block decides which is the orphan - assuming the race is only one block long, which is most likely.

What happened is that antpoo got a block and we got a block ... around the same time.
Then one of the following happened:
1) Antpoo took more than 2 seconds to process their block and send it out
2) Antpoo sent out their block about the same time as us but the GFW slowed it down getting to USA, Europe, Japan etc ... i.e. the rest of the world
3) Antpoo knew about our block but used theirs, later, instead
4) Our block took a long time to get to them (even though the relay in USA, Europe and Japan knew about our block 2-4 seconds before the Antpoo block)
5) The GFW slowed down our block getting to Antpoo - this is a possible cause for 4) to happen

Then finally:
Since Antpoo was working on their block and not ours, when they found the next network block, before anyone else, that meant ours was an orphan.

Unfortunately, what woke me up was the DE node alarms.
Anyone mining on the DE node will have almost certainly failed over at 22:40 UTC
There was a network outage somewhere between the main pool node and the DE node.
It was less than a minute, so everyone who failed over will have reconnected back on the next attempt (and the hash rate was back up to normal within a few minutes)
...
I think I should point to DE node being located in UK but I'm not sure of stratum address for miners - can't find official info.

well guys i am going to have to shut down my miners at this time ive been running my 4 s1's and 1 s2 here since about jan and been lovin it but with the PH/s at where it is now i cannot afford electric for them

so i tried adding rentals to it to help it but diddnt help

maybe if i can sell these units and get something better down the road ill be able to mine again

i loved kano's pool alot

learned alot while here ill be jumping on here once in a while but only other miner that i have thats energy effeciant is my 4 compac sticks will be 5 if i can get sidehack to fix it right now its only about 60-66GH/s so its concidered dust so im going to be running that somewhere else or maybe ill shut it down..

been alot of fun guys and good luck with more blocks

All of that gear is in China mining on a Chinese pool.  Can I blame a guy with 3 s-7's in the basement of a school in china for mining in china no I do not.

The gear is not leaving China  and if you are mining with physical gear in china it is best to mine on a Chinese pool with a Chinese server.

I prefer mining with Avalon gear over bitmain as well. Bitmain are too big.

Although, some valid points were made for both camps.

The A6 does clock in at approximately .7 TH lower than the S7 I have running on the same power supply.
When I purchased this particular A6 the final cost to my door was approximately $150.00 more for the A6.

Those differences are not enough to sway me away from the A6 though. Ever since I started mining I made the decision that I cared more about Bitcoin growing to be something I could be proud to be a part of and as long as it is possible I will not let money make my decisions as much as my moral compass.

However, there are some things which can have a significant impact on people and put them in a position where if they want to mine, they buy from Bitmain. For example when the S7 was initially brought to the market there was not an A6. As a matter of fact everyone in mining when the S7 rolled out had been unable to purchase a piece of new gear from anywhere. In my situation I was running 2nd hand everything except for two SP20s and an S4 I purchased new. A dozen S3's all second, third or 4th hand, some S5s a good forum member sold me, and a couple of more SP20s I purchased secondhand from a great forum member. We were dying for new gear and I don't think anyone would refuse any new miner at that point for various reasons..

My current issue is my Avalons are unable to take the heat my Antminers and SP20s handle. It is still spring here and we aren't even coming close to our average daily ambient temperatures. I have not done everything I can do to improve the situation but I have done some basic things like move a test unit to the coolest location of the mining room. Install a nice 3000 CFM exhaust fan and have the room setup so the outside air is pulled across / through all of the miners, etc
The Avalons simply downclock which is a good feature, but they simply do not handle the heat as well as the S7s. My S5+ is still in operation and it kills every other miner in terms of lowest temps.

As I said I haven't done every little thing I can.

In my opinion the Avalon is a better engineered miner for the most part. It should have more power connections, it should handle the heat better and it should have a higher hashrate. I cannot speak to Avalon's warranty procedures, but I can say that Bitmain has some of the worst customer service I have ever seen from anywhere. If you live in the US and want average customer service from Bitmain then the price becomes more in line with Avalon's because you can pay a higher price, currently 45 bucks, but I have paid over 100 above the direct factory price. This is done by purchasing through the North American group. The service is handled in Colorado and they have not argued with me or ignored me for weeks as Bitmain direct have done. They have agreed with me on some things the factory did which were very wrong. For example when I paid an astronomical number of Bitcoin for the S5+ when it was new I had a fan failure within the first week. They told me Bitmain doesn't cover fans, and to go purchase one locally.

Bitmain has poor leadership, but again dealing with the US group does make it a better experience. It does not make up for the choices they continue to make everyday which damage our network. The choice to SPV mine, sell used gear as new, manipulate the bitcoin price, the choice to be involved in a conspiracy of network control by certain people and other pools, and in general again, very poor leadership. There is evil driven greed making the decisions there.

So my decision to mine and support the good people here, support bitcoin, and support what I see as Bitcoin still learning to walk was made by purchasing mostly Bitmain hardware. I have a voice through my hardware.
While the amount of money spent on hardware does go to Bitmain and support the nefarious things I barely touched on I do not believe has been more important than the things I do with my hardware and the reason for my involvement in firing the shots I can. Things that are more important to me and my choices.

If I ROI that is great, but if I am able to afford to mine and keep my miners running, that is awesome in my personal situation. If I had it to do over I would have handled some purchases differently and would own more Avalons.

I do not sell my signature space because I have not found anyone / company I believe in which pays. Most sig campaigns are not what I want to be associated with. I feel like it is too important and I never have an intention to lend my support in that manner unless I have personally used and vetted their service AND I feel good about them I should keep trying to use all of my resources to promote the great things in our community. I spoke with Kano recently about making an advertisement for this pool, and I still plan to do so. I simply have not had time to do the things which are currently higher on my priority list.

Please do not misunderstand me when I say these things regarding miner purchases. I certainly believe we should all make an effort to purchase from different manufacturers, namely Avalon. I am explaining why I made the decisions I did.

I am not rich, but I do make a decent salary and as long as possible I will continue to support our ecosystem the best ways possible. The Avalon miner is a better miner in terms of reliability for me. The biggest problem was availability, specifications and price point to a degree. Knowing they could have priced competitively bothered me, but it was certainly never the single factor driving my decisions.

OK, back to work for me, I simply needed to stop in and say hi to everyone along with commenting on this discussion. I dearly hope we all have more choices coming soon because there is not a doubt that Bitmain will be right there as they have been offering the gear and ready for a price war. We should make an effort to stop supporting Bitmain. However I will not support them by removing one of the only ways I have to help in other situations. I guess we all have to make that decision for ourselves because no one knows what individual issues and decisions we each must deal with.

Have a great day everyone.

That's the issue ... no one should lose a block after 2-4 seconds ...
Of course GFW issues and network connectivity will mean that it will happen sometimes
(especially for small pools - which we aren't a small pool any more)
but those numbers really say that it's most likely that either the GFW screwed us over or antpoo did.
Very annoying (as I'm sure everyone else has felt about it until we found the next 2 blocks)

I didn't get screenshots, but even BTC.com had Kano as the finder of that block until Antpoo found the next block... OK I am not going to post anything more about it

Well, I do understand the feeling about Bitmain. I'm a small miner...when I'm maxed out on power, I'll be running a little over 16Th. I just ordered 2 S7s from Bitmain, Batch 16 (one fan). I would have preferred to go with Avalon, but logistically it didn't make sense in my specific situation. They cost twice as much (as what I had to pay Bitmain with a coupon), and produce a full Th less than the S7; yes, it's on 1050 watts v. 1300w, but even 1050w basically takes a full 20A 120v circuit, unless you piggyback two S3s to get another .9Th. So...,you've got 4.6Th from the circuit. With an S7, you can run one S3 with it, and get around 5.1Th. Those were the factors I had to look at, since I've got just four 20A circuits to work with. When Avalon is able to put out a unit that is just a bit heftier, and it made economic sense (or an S7 bites the dust), I'll move over.
well 1000 watts @ 120 volts is 9 amps, also Bitmain specs for the S7 any batch is for an ambient temp of 25 degrees C. that is a hard target to meet anywhere south of the mason-nixon line
Edit: that's 77 Fahrenheit

I'm on the far west end of Kau'ai Island in Hawai'i...21 N. I've had to make some adjustments on air circulation in the room, but I'm not using AC and don't anticipate having to. It's been up to 89F here w/the one S7 I have, but it maintains no more than 67C on any of the three boards. My complaint/displeasure is the noise level. The B9 S7 I run is incredibly noisy. Also...we have to manage a relatively unstable power grid here. A 20A circuit here is only good for about 2KW, because the line power hovers more toward 100v than where it's supposed to be. Two A6s would blow the breaker on surge.

Homes are built quite differently here than on the mainland. Any outside wall will generally be plastered with louver windows, or sliding glass doors w/screens, to catch the prevailing tradewinds. I "encourage" that circulation somewhat, but not with AC. I've been able to manage quite well, but it's a unique circumstance here.

EDIT: I use TrippLite 1800w line conditioners on each circuit, and they're constantly in the yellow or red. The gear is getting the right current, but the breaker is not caring. I have tried running a nominal 1800w (five S3s at 355w ea, 1775) and it will not hold for more than 20 sec. Yes, I could monkey with the breakers, but mgt would not like that methinks.  Cool
what i was trying to state is that the S7s specs are an ambient temp. of 75 degrees F. haigh temps will affect efficiency

Ah, yeah...I agree...but I'm happy if they're running at spec (and they are) and not overheating. Been a really good day for blocks. Luv it.

Well, it seems I do sleep sometimes after all ...

The orphan was about 2 hours after I went to sleep.

I've now switched the status on the orphan block and payout to orphan just as we found block 750.

Now, for the orphan, seems I don't have to spend much time working out what happened, as others have already worked out why.
Yep, it was an orphan race between us and antpoo but they won coz they confirmed their own block.

Our block: 406197 0000000000000000033f1b617ad5c03cec10a6bcc19ce0778e8d75fdbf1ed152

18:24:40.233 block received on the US network relay

18:24:43.204 antpoo block first appeared on the US relay network

... 3 seconds ...

We send our blocks out from many locations using bitcoinds and the relay network ... and our nodes relay faster than the relay network.
So at this point, we could only guess what went wrong at antpoo.

More relay stats:
18:24:40.383 our block appeared on the JPY relay node
18:24:42.394 antpoo block appeared on the JPY relay node

... ~2 seconds there ...

18:24:40.256 our block sent on the EU relay node
18:24:40.287 our block received back from the EU relay node
18:24:44.088 antpoo block appeared on the EU relay node

... 3.8 seconds there ...

Thank you Kano for the thorough explanation as always! Can you imagine if the same request was made of Antpoo...

I moved here from those guys in December 2015(not as long as some) but I will never turn back. This pool is transparent, has the best and most helpful community, and 107% luck since inception... why would anyone mine anywhere else?
