I know there has been talk about watercooling with the K16's , but has anyone contacted a company for prototyping a waterblock?
If this has been a topic beaten to death, im sorry, just been out of the loop for a few weeks

I have a water block on the way to me that I think may work. Up to six K16's will fit to it. If it looks workable I will add it to my website as an option.

I also have 4 prototype boards being built by a local pcb manufacturer that I should  have in a few days. I will use them for parts placement testing, solder oven testing, and as mechanical samples for single heat sinks and the water block.

You have to look harder. I've been able to source all parts but one or two (and the headers, but those should be easy, right?) since I started searching yesterday. Also some of these are available in different packages, ie cut-tape vs reel. I'm not going to give away all my secrets yet until I have confirmation of shipments.

If anyone has the hard-to-find items (Murata 38L361C and IR3895) I'd pay a premium, hint hint.

Ok. I don't want to be rude or mean but... if you don't know which part it is I'm programming for you then please do not build this yourself. There is a reason I've stated this is this is for "hard core DIY" builders. It's not even that hard core, but I do expect you to know which chip is being programmed. At this time, that is, after 3 months of ongoing forum discussion and pre-amble if you don't have PIC chips then you won't likely be getting them soon except via me (very limited stock coming next week) or someone building for you. A week or two ago you may have found all these parts but with everyone buying them up for production it's not very likely now.

Several of the parts on that list are in stock at Mouser.com and they are a very easy place to buy from. Check there first, then check Digikey, then check Newark or element14 and so on. Some you won't find but except for 3 probably the rest are still available or easy to substitute for.

If you have Avalon chips and want them assembled then contact sensei - he is doing assembly using my boards. The others are doing pre-made boards with their Avalon chips.

The PICs you won't find anywhere right now. Earliest delivery quoted is Aug. 15th and Microchip have been pushing the date back since June as mfr. keep buying them before the distributors.

The Dual NOR gates are available still at Digikey.
The USB conn. is available at Mouser, 4577 in stock.
The ferrite bead is available at Mouser.
The PCIe connectors were in stock a few days ago but seem to be gone now. You can get by without in a pinch by using the same 6 pin non-PCIe version, or just soldering the wires on the pads made available at board edge.

The pin headers are generic - many brands are out there and you can get by without. But in a pinch there are quite a few on ebay.

The capacitor is in stock at Mouser but if you can't find one then try the next voltage up same package size, a different brand, or a different temperature rating. It may cost a few pennies more but they are out there.

The first 3 on the list are hard. I bought a couple dozen for myself just a couple weeks ago but everything has changed since then and the board assemblers have swooped in and bought up thousands. You're looking at table scraps for a while. Keep checking because sometimes the PICs show up briefly. I bought a few hundred PICs just two days ago.

It reminds me of when we were watching Newegg for the ATI cards two years ago.

Why the quantity is 192, if 266 - 43 = 223?
C43-266 is the reference ID range, ie. from C43 up to C266. There is 16 ASICs and each one has 12 0.47uF caps.

12 * 16 = 192.

Oh, and due to past changes, some were removed leaving holes in the number range.

Why the quantity is 192, if 266 - 43 = 223?

I've ordered a few of these ATX 8-pin Extenders to test. I'd cut off the end and replace it with 2x PCIe 6 pin connectors to go into a K16. This allows making use of the PSU 8-pin connector in addition to the PCIe ones. I don't know what gauage wire they use on these cheap ones, but if it's the recommended 18ga. or 16ga even, then 4 K16s should work off the ATX 8 pin.

The ATX 8-pin crimp housing is available on Mouser - Molex part # 39-01-3083 I believe, at $0.36 each, Qty 10. I figured the ebay one has wires already attached and includes shipping, even if it may take a while at economy speed.

Also, this 6 pin splitter seems decent, with low shipping cost if you're in USA.

(Note that I have not personally confirmed any of these figures)

Stock, each chip draws 1.86W. So that'd be 16 * 16 * 1.86 = 476.16W, well within the range of a single power supply.

However, you expect some overhead for the board, and most people are probably going to overclock. That said, a 1kW power supply should suffice for 16 boards.

Each ASIC draws 2W, so that's 32W per board, plus a bit for overhead, lets call is a nice round 40W.

16 x 40W = 640W

So, yes, you should be able to run it off a single 850W+ power supply, assuming it can supply at least 650W on the 12V rail.

I don't have a recommendation for that. It depends completely on other factors like what size heat sink and what orientation your board is in. Use your best judgement. Allow for air flow as the component side needs some air flow as well. I think most users will mount them fan/heat sink on top and board upside down with components underneath but I could be wrong on that.


It appears that the power connector is the tallest component on the board, so I'm going to go with a very conservative clearance height of 50mm on that side of the board.
That sounds good. There are two possible versions of the PCIe connector to use. The "Right Angle" one feeds power off the back edge and is only 10mm high (plus a small latch tab which isn't indicated on the drawing). And then there is a "Vertical" version where the cable comes out the top. This one needs bending radius space. If typical yellow/black 18ga. wire is used then that shouldn't be too much and I think 50mm works for that situation as well.

The large capacitors are also 10mm high, and if multiple boards can fit side by side then a Klego connector would be about the same but with the female joiner attached would be a few mm taller.

1) on the BOM, are the "Alternate" components the ones we should choose for Overclocking ability?

2) Is the dual NOR gate "74AUP2G02DC" firm choice? can it be substituted with dual input "74AUP2G02DC,125" gate?

The alternates are just possible changes that could be made, not necessarily for over clocking but some of them are. However, they may not be direct substitutions. eg. the inductor alternate won't fit on the board without a small change to the pad size. In that case it was going to be for an alternate board to match.

On the gates, I don't know what those extra numbers mean but I have seen them as well and I believe they're the same part. Those extra digits are not described in the data sheet ordering info, and my guess is that it indicates it's a 125C temp range. But that is what the data sheets says is normal anyway. I think the ones I ordered also have the 125 suffix. The DC letter codes are the important ones as that indicates the package type and you do not want a package that doesn't fit the board.
