Kobocoin - Mobile Money for Africa
Seemingly a stupid question: but what miner can we use to mine for this coin? Can we use our BitCoin hardware miners for this?
Check here:

Another issue:

./minerd -a x15 -t 6 -s 4 -o stratum+tcp://kobo.suprnova.cc:5057 -u drazha.worker -p worker

Seems nothing is working on port 5057?

Dude, the coin isn't launched yet...  Grin

Also, for sgminer, there are more than one editions. Most of them working with the argument "-k bitblock" or "-algorithm bitblock"

Yes, I use -k bitblock. Or "alogrithm" : "bitblock" when I'm using a conf file.

./sgminer -k x15 -o stratum+tcp://kobo.suprnova.cc:5057 -u Weblogin.WorkerName -p WorkerPassword

yet...

./sgminer --help reports :

Are you sure about that -k switch?

Looks great.my bubba will be ready @ launch
Happy mining! Kobocoin will be cloud mining using Suprnova pool. My Bubba will be solo mining (then pool mining) till it's last remaining GPU fails (I thought I had 2 good GPU's but another one is sick).

Did you try switching gpu's to ensure it's not a broken pci-e slot?

Try to run one by one and check what happens.
Tried them both. It runs fine for about 15mins but as soon as I start mining the temps and rpm show there's a problem.
what cards do you have? i have a gigabyte 280x BF edition that runs @ 89-93 celcius all the time.when it was ne w it was a little cooler, cant get all the dust out.
the 280x from gygabyte not BF edition runs alot cooler
and what algo you mining?

I had 3 MSI 7950's Twin Frozr. I'm using sgminer 5.1/bitblock. The temps should be around 69C but the sick GPU gets up to 90C in 5-10 mins. Also, the software disables it as sick. You can see it's sick as well. One fan is sticking at startup. The dead GPU had 2 stuck fans. It wasn't even registering at the OS level. The single GPU still mines OK. I'm getting 1.2Mhs out of it (sometimes).
maybe if you lower engine and memclock a little to keep it under 90 it would still work.could be a thermal problem.
7950 and 280 are both tahiti core i believe.
but it solved my problem
No joy. The fan is stuck. It's not even spinning up.

Hope that goes some way to answering your question(s).

Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful answer.

It's interesting that you bring up the issue of the project being "admirable", and I see your point.  I was meaning it more in the general sense of it being admirable for a crypto to have meaningful, real-world goals, given how many essentially pointless coins we've seen, but that the sentiment is so common probably also betrays a certain naive condescension among those unfamiliar with Africa (myself included).  We so often hear about both micro-finance and Africa in the context of humanitarian work that there might be a tendency to think about Kobocoin in similar terms, which, as you say, misses the point.

Anyway, I can see that you have a plan and the qualifications to give it a chance at success.  Again, best wishes, and I'll be watching the progress with interest.
Thanks. Sorry if I went on a bit but I'm glad you got the point of it all.

I ask this out of honest curiosity, and not to be negative--I like the idea of what you're proposing, will consider investing, and wish you all the best.  However...

Kobocoin's goals are both grand and admirable, but such aspirations require more than just hope and a website of stock images of West Africans. What connections/credibility/experience in the target region do you have that will advance Kobocoin's stated mandate as a regional micropayment system?

Every coin advertizes in social media and attempts to partner with services or retailers.  Every Nigerian with a mobile phone and some spare change is already free to invest in existing cryptos, and the growth of mobile banking in the region suggests that some (many?) already do.  But why should Kobocoin emerge as "the" micropayment system over existing options, some of which are already supported by local interests?  Furthermore, a sizable proportion of hashpower during PoW will come from outside West Africa, and many Kobocoins will be held by "foreign" investors.  If I am a West African, how will you convince me that Kobocoin is truly for me, and not just another supposedly-decentralized-but-actually-quite-centralized-in-the-West crypto?
