Yes, that's common, when a mediocre team plays against a top team, the mediocre team will only play defensively and there's nothing wrong with that. But if Madrid really put the starting eleven as a main player then I believe, even though Elche played defensively it was still not strong enough to withstand Madrid's attacks. This does depend on the tournament as well but at least it's not surprising that when they enter extra time, they will change their gameplay to be more open. By the way congrats to Madrid too, they have qualified for the quarter-finals.
