As far as assembly, how will the orders be prioritized? Will it be by order date, or by assembly purchase payment date, or some other method?

My guess is that you have plenty of time... weeks at least.

He's indicated that priority is based on first in first out order based on order date/time.

I didn't realize he had already spelled out the priority of assembly, but that order makes sense.

Still, from the OP it sounds like there is some sense of urgency in making payment for assembly, and I want to make sure I'm ready.

I already have a miner consuming 1kW, my house has 2x100A ie. 22kW (@110V), this is a 100yo house, most modern North American houses have 2 x 200A coming into them ie. 44kW.  Australian houses generally have 80A ie. 19.2kW (@240V).

Yes, homes can use a lot of electricity, but it does not take a lot before you are flagged for abnormal usage. Very quick search found this, I've seen a ton of similar examples:

I remember 1,500 kWh per month elsewhere as being a limit that gets interest or being different from neighbors. That is not a lot. 1,500kWh translates to roughly 2kW per hour consumption. So that 1kW miner plus your normal usage starts to get you close.

For comparisons, my home bases at 400-600 kWh per month, which is about 700W average consumption. If I all of a sudden I jump 500% to 3,700W average consumption (100 K16s + home use) what happens?

Being paranoid? Probably. But isn't the whole point of Bitcoin that you are overly paranoid regarding government backed money   Grin

I think 100A service is pretty standard in the US.  Most homes only use 20%.  The 100A is at 220V also.

There are plenty of small businesses that legitimately consume a *lot* of current (think electroplaters for instance), you just need to be in a location with an independent street feed.

There's lots of good ideas for assembling large amounts of these units into something workable (I just read a six page thread on how to set up a rackmount version of these ... scary how much firepower could fit in one rack!). 

The issue is simply power at that density. Roughly every 30 K16s will consume around 1kW (32W * 30 = 960W). Since your average home can only handle several kilowatts (generally less than 6kW), that means that stuffing more than 100 K16s is neither needed or realistic. (Plus you have to start to worry about the DEA showing up) Datacenters & co-location services have the same problem, most are limited to 20A or 40A per rack. Anything more starts to get absurdly expensive. Very curious how steamboat plans to run his hosting service.

I've been rather stuck on these power supply limitations, would like to buy a large batch and scale-up but have no idea how to power a ton of K16s even though they would easily fit in the basement. I'm starting to wonder if maybe home self generation begins to make sense. Natural Gas fuel cell generators come in 5kW and 10kW sizes and are very efficient at generating electricity, they just cost a large amount and require installation, at that point though it's no longer a hobby...

This is how I look at it: There will be room for expansion in a PC case. You may want something small now but what about 6 months from now? Why keep buying small cases when you can get a cheap computer case now and be done with it? The PC case has the added benefit of being pre-drilled for your power supply. Just a thought

I'm poking around looking for case/housing options for these miners.  What are the anticipated final dimensions of one fully assembled unit, please?  If the unit is stored in a case, would the bottom standoffs still be necessary? (i.e., do they serve some purpose other than providing spacing between stacked units?)

I believe the K16 is 10cm X 10cm but its height is variable(heatsink!).

If you're not stacking them then the standoffs will probably attach directly to the case. Think about the standoffs on a regular computer motherboard that attach it to its case; same idea. The bottom standoffs keep the uneven surface of the assembled PCB from just sitting there on the bottom of the case.

I'm thinking about just making a case out of plexi when the time comes. It'll be cheap and easy and it'll look neat.

I'm planning on mounting 4 units in a slim micro ATX case, using something like this:



You do need SOME sort of standoff to keep the PCB suspended in the case, and you will need the others to hold the fan up.

Has anyone given any thought to using a wall wart with a Molex connector (e.g. http://amzn.com/B002TJNDU4) and running it through a molex-->pcie adapter? Are there any reasons why that wouldn't work? I would love not to have a large, exposed power supply if I don't have to.
