This would be a great idea. Dogies thread on powering the AM Erupter Blades was very helpful, and something similar for the K16 project would be wonderful.

I'm currently looking at running just a single K16. Has anyone given any thought to using a wall wart with a Molex connector (e.g. http://amzn.com/B002TJNDU4) and running it through a molex-->pcie adapter? Are there any reasons why that wouldn't work? I would love not to have a large, exposed power supply if I don't have to.
I've been toying with the idea of doing something like this. I want to use a wall wart to power my RPi and my single K16. It should be possible(and less noisy than an ATX PSU).
That wall wart you linked to puts out 12 V, which is fine for a K16(iirc), but the RPi needs 5 V. An LM7805 or similar would do the job.
Using that same wall wart to power a USB hub should also be possible, but I only have the one K16 so I'm not going to bother with a hub

I would tend to want to power a RPi from a separate source anyway, since the amount of current it draws is variable and a little unpredictable. Though if you have an adapter that supplies enough power for a K16 and 2 amps left over for the RPi, you're probably in fine shape. 7805 is from the 70s, you would be better off with 2 wall warts than wasting 7V @ 500ma of heat from a 7805. Consider a simple USB cigarette lighter converter from ebay. or http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-Converter-Buck-Step-down-Module-12V-convert-to-5V-3A-USB-Car-power-adapter-/171061990530

All 280W is on the 12V rail though so don't compare with the overall capacity of the supply.

Personally I like Corsair Brand PSUs. How many do you want to power?

A single Corsair CX430 should do just fine and can be purchased for anywhere from $30-60 online. It was on sale a few weeks ago for $29.99 after rebate at Newegg. The biggest thing you need to check is how many amps the 12V rail supplies. Run that amount through a wattage calculator to make sure everything lines up. The 35 watt figure should be treated as an estimate right now until BKK has a board up and mining, I would figure 40 watts per K16 to be safe

Yeah I plan on running headless myself, just run cgminer on RPi startup and let it mine away 
You should just use ssh, then you don't need either a keyboard or a mouse. (Or a monitor)

Well I am by no means an expert lol but from what I gather they will "tile" together with some form of pin headers or jumper wires. Please anyone with more insight on the subject correct me if I am wrong. The powered hub won't be strictly necessary as the "master" K16 will handle the USB comms for the chain. This would leave you with a USB port on the RPi free for a keyboard. cgminer runs from the command line so you shouldn't need a mouse

Ouch I need full assembly then. I think my first two orders maybe didn't even include saying what i wanted done with the things but the last order I sent the form did include saying, and I foolishly put full kit not realising that would mean the chips could be bad.
Is there a procedure for updating that? As now i obviously am going to want full assembly at least, and if that doesn't include chi-checking then i guess I would need to full assembly plus testing.
All you've committed to is what you've paid for, buying some chips. As above SB is finalizing a shopping cart for chip buyers to nominate and, if necessary, pay for what they want done to their chips. Commitment comes with payment, you've only committed for what you've paid for. SB did send out a survey to batch 1 buyers, afaik this was just a survey to gauge interest.
At what point will discovery of bad chips be done?
Will only good chips be going onto K16 boards?
Or will we only find out if chips are bad once we get our K16 boards?
Part of why i am wondering this is if possible I would like to have K16s made from any full sets of 16 good chips I have, and K1s of any odd chips left over after bad chips are weeded out.

Bad chips will be discovered during the testing phase of the boards. Any boards discovered to have a faulty chip will be repaired with the replacement chips. There are a few options we are exploring regarding board testing, and a procedure to do so will be finalized prior to chip arrival. K1's will not be available for Batch 1, as our focus is on ensuring the K16 are produced, tested, and shipped as quickly as possible. This may change in subsequent batches as the process is streamlined and more resources are made available.

If you went to the shops and bought a new TV, is there any form of guarantee it won't break in a month? Nope! It could blow up the moment you plug it in, or it could carry on for 50 years
As to if there's any recompense if it breaks in a month, that's another matter, but my view is there probably isn't. Steamboat will no doubt chip in (geddit?!) but it's probably unlikely. I've bought extra chips just in case, so that's my "insurance".Also, if I ordered now, would I likely get it in august?
All that sort of information is in the first post, but as much as steamboat has done to push this forward, no one can do anything without the Avalon chips, so the timescales will start from when they are received. August is possible, but then so is December... (but let's hope not)!
