any idea how screwed I am with 128 chips?  Looking at mining calculators looks like I'll only make $700 in a year, am I way off or is the calculator flawed?

I doubt the percentage will remain 100%+ per month, but im new to this, any updated predictions guys?

It won't make you a single dollar. The miners makes bitcoins! Its an important difference..  that some people seems to neglect.
If you believe the coins will go up, invest in coins. If you belive you can buy mining hardware for less than cost of coins, buy mining hardware.
It seems according you your calculation, if you remove extra fees and the 2% silly mining pool fee, will make a total of 7.44 btc, not including power costs.
The value of those coins, are worth as much as they are worth when you sell them and only then.
From the looks of the calculation, your last month of mining will be in the month of January, if difficulty by then hits 1361MM you will only make 0.5BTC, which should be similiar to your electricity cost pending on the value btc/usd at that time.
Then again, if the difficulty increase slows off which some people dont think it will, you might make more, maybe 10BTC until then or that it happends later that hardware becomes obsolete.
Or , that you are able to sell it on ebay for a lot more than buyers are willing to pay for it here while you have already mined with it for a while.
On ebay, dont show TGB link, only show this link http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/, which does not calculate difficulty updates..

Well said.  Mining equip I buy is in BTC and my ROI calculations are in BTC.  If I'm not getting a return in BTC then I'm buying coins instead.  The calc here is much better http://btcinvest.net/en/bitcoin-mining-profit-calculator.php

October's already half over, that assumes you're mining for the whole month.

30% per jump at least until Feb.  I hope it won't happen, but I am expecting it.  Hashfast and Cointerra are shipping TH/s units and hit $4/Gh/s by Jan.  It's going to be brutal.

Same here.  Very glad I've had the strength to limit my pre-ordering.

IMO, Avalon-based miners are currently worth ~$20/GH on the market. So your 128 chips would be worth ~$800 if delivered on boards today. I paid ~$1100 for 128 chips plus ~$1200 for steamboat to assemble them on K16 boards, so even if I received them today, I've lost $1500. For the record, I mostly blame Yifu and company, not steamboat.

I don't want to wait for the bootloader either.
I am willing to accept my miners at whatever is available now.

But without a bootloader, one would need a PIC programmer to either install the bootloader once available (to facilitate future firmware updates via USB), or to directly apply the inevitable firmware updates.

I'm just sayin...

Edit: From looking at SB's last update, which is the only "official" information I have to go on, it seems that the firmware itself isn't finished yet either, or wasn't at that time.

If only there were some way for Steamboat to communicate the current status of the board development...

So, anyway, when do the miners ship exactly?  Huh

When sb will have time for us...

I'm guessing once the miners of dubious value finally ship, he'll once again decide to grace us with his presence to FINALLY give us the details on getting our miserable tiny fraction of the assembly charges refunded...

Because you know, right now it's all about the people who got stuck with, er, I mean the people who decided to keep their miners. Once they have their crap, SB can once again consider the issue of our assembly refunds.

The Really Big Question: Are there working miners, or not?
The miners work, they are working on USB bootloader so we can flash firmware.  Id however like my miners now, even if I gotta screw on fans myself, this is rediculous

Still shocked Yifu bothered to ship the chips at all instead of refunding everyone, considering how inefficient Avalon ASICs are compared to other designs it won't make sense to even turn them on a little bit.

My hope is SB runs another group assembly run with Bitfury or other chips. I just got 1 Drillbit board from that groupbuy, not much but I wanted some hardware for fun, doubt it will ever pay off. But at some point an ASIC chip vendor is going to sell worthwhile chips at a reasonable price, and I hope to use my assembly components/etc from this canceled order then.

Couldn't agree more.  I didn't get chip refund tho, so my parts are probably gonna get smashed onto a K16 with inferior chips etc etc.

But I'd still like to see SB do Bitfury or some other asic as a group buy, or just announce out of the blue he's produced some and they're in his online shop (preferable) Wink

Yes, I received the refund for the chips (you can check the refund tracking thread), but like others am in limbo over the assembly cost. So, so far only 45% recovery...

Actually, I think he WOULD have refunded all batches had SB acted quickly enough to submit the requests. For some reason he insisted that "no one would be forced to take a refund", then delayed until it was too late to request refunds for all batches.

I'm sure he did that because people kept screaming they wanted their miners, and also because his business model depended on assembling miners, not refunding chips.

I'm "officially" the cutoff customer, as per SB's email. The "official" refund request is "16/09" (between " " because I *think* I submitted it before, but hey, I might be wrong).

I got an email yesterday saying I would get a refund for 450 chips (I ordered 904) and saying assembly is starting - but I also have 54 miners, fully assembled + hosting, paid for and still no news regarding the amount of the refund for those.

If anyone is interested, PM me with a reasonable offer. I'm looking at min 1BTC per miner, chips for free.

That's rough, I also had a large order (485 chips 30 miners) and feel for you. On the bright side at least you got the 450 back so that's some recovery.

Given the amount of hash power coming online soon from KnC, CoinTerra, Bitfury, etc., etc., etc. I'm beginning to think that mining will become unprofitable in the next 6 months for ASIC chips of any efficiency. Not just ROI on the capital cost for a miner, but breakeven cost with electricity. If the hash rate goes up another 100x from here even 28nm ASICs start to operate at a loss.

At that point I'm not sure what will happen, even the large professional mining pools are in trouble. I think two things will happen: 1) ASIC vendors will will not be able to sell and stop producing chips, and 2) Many people will sell miners on the cheap.

I'm beginning to think that this is the time to get back in, buy unprofitable miners on the cheap and then either run at a slight loss or just wait for a BTC price spike and turn on then.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything back. I don't know what's the hold out either, as "refunds have been processed".

What happened to your order, did you get a refund?
