If I take myself as an example when it comes to investments, then for me long term comes in the 5-10 year range.
Medium term will be in the 2-3 year range, and short term is everything up to more or less 12 months.
But I also agree on the fact that Bitcoin at this point is purely hype and speculation driven where people look to get as much profit as possible in a matter of months.

investment in bitcoin is very different than traditional investments because most of traditional investments is physical such as gold or property but bitcoin is different because this is digital currency however i think most of traders will not have the exact time how long they will hold their bitcoin and i'm pretty sure if they had already have target sell they will selling their bitcoin immediately because we all know that basic for all investments is how to get very much profit
i think by long term investment it mean 1 to 2 years of duration. and from short term investment it means the investment for hours and days. some tie i do long term investment and on regular basis i do long term investment i personally like short time investment. i do a little earning from it but do it continuously.
but i think that long term investment is much more good than short term investment because i also get a big profit from long term investment and short term investment can not make a good profit so i recommend that long term investment is good .I agree that long term investment often leads to a great result. But be observant because not 100% of these long-term investments ended perfectly. Aside from waiting, how about invest your investment. I mean, you invested in bitcoin, and let your bitcoin grow by investing it on trading or ICO's of potential coins.
You need to buy good coins with good development team and community support. Otherwise, they will lose value.

But I don't think Bitcoin will be banned because it's used for illegal activities. Then we should also ban fiat currencies which are also used for illegal things but that wouldn't solve the problem.
No, I'm not ready to accept one year as a long term. In my perspective, long term must be, from one halving to another halving at least. Halving may occur approximately every 3.5 years, so in terms of this measurement we need to hold bitcoins for some 3 to 4 years to be considered as long term investments.In my case, I prefer to hold bitcoin till I will get retirement. Seriously, right now I do not have any commitment for my bitcoin saving, so hopefully I will be able to hold them for loooong term.

I think it will depend on the user. Is that person that patient to wait for 5 years? I talk about this because I am not. I dont have that much patience to just buy then wait. I want something to work with so that I wont be bored waiting and can make it larger before the 5 years come.

I think it depend on the money and financial status of the investor if the investor will have more money and he will not need to withdraw his money for his needs then he can invest for years and if the investor will need his money for his needs then he will put them for shorter time and that will be his long term.

It all depends on how volatile the market is. With enough average volatility, I can make like 10-15% profit per month. But when the price isn't moving a lot, the profits will be much lower though. I mostly skip trading on these days.

We need not to worry about government restrictions on bitcoin usage. Because, bitcoin will find its own way of existing irrespect of any government regulations.Changing your plan of holding bitcoins by anticipating government restrictions is not that much good idea, as only in long term bitcoin will give us very big benefits. Still, 5 years is not short term, still holding for decades is recommended.

as with all long term investments, we don't know the end result. people can assume the price will go up to much higher levels in the coming years, but assumptions don't have any value. especially here on this forum. if you really plan to hold your coins for 5 years, then you'll either get very happy due to the profits that you have made, or you'll end up being disappointed as the price went even down. be prepared for everything and stay calm.
They are going to come from developing countries with high inflation, because it is going to prevent their asset from losing it value since the value of Bitcoin is expected to go up provided everything works according to Satoshi plan

Well i am thinking to hold bitcoin for long terms but i fear that if price drop down because now itself it's price is stable and I think traders are less conscious about bitcoin rather they trade with other altcoins. Those good days of bitcoin had gone now 
For me not only 5 years, but I usually sell when the time is right and of course also got profit. I don't holding too long, I don't want to take risk because Bitcoin price is unpredictable.
