Been watching this from the begining. are you guys sure that Blake is the best choice? This algo makes mining profitable just for GPU miners

Simple GPU miner - A simple AMD GPU miner that connects to a local daemon will be available before launch. In the future, proper getblocktemplate functionality will be enabled and pool software will be made available.

@decred, I would like to get some detailed clarification about mining.

First of all, why a new miner and why not support for pooled mining from the beginning?

There are already GPU miners available:

For AMD GPUs:

https://github.com/Griffitsj/cgminer-saffron/

Code:
cgminer --blake256 -o stratum+tcp://...

p.s.: this should be migrated to the newer sgminer, otherwise it's just fine

For NVIDIA GPUs:

https://github.com/tpruvot/ccminer or https://github.com/sp-hash/ccminer

Code:
ccminer.exe -a blake -o stratum+tcp://...

These two miners implements Blake256 algo with 14 rounds, the same as Decred is using. So mining software is already here, why not simply use it? Are you planing to make any changes in the algorithm (if yes, why?)? Or will these miners be able to mine on Decred out-of-the-box once pools are out? Also, are you planning to go some non-standard way or will Decred be fully compatible with the standard stratum protocol for pooled mining?

Thanks for the answers!

Still no clarification on this? People are asking about mining and it is still unclear weather existing cgminers/ccminers will be compatible with mining Decred.

14 round blake-256 is 14 round blake-256.  The answer should be yes.  Wait for the official answer though, I don't want to mislead anyone.

Glad to see the discussion about mining algorithims that I partially started took full form,

For this I feel Blake is good as an introduction for the many,

But as we progress, in order to invite even more miners, we should focus our efforts to develop an algorithm for all if there is enough consenus by the Decred blockchain. (CPU miners, GPU, ASICS, etc)

Another batch went out at about 5:30 PM CST (01/15/16). Remember to check your spam if you haven't received an invite yet.

Looks like the world is ready for Decred.  The latest bitcoin drama is a testament to this fact.

If BTC had decentralized governance built in to the blockchain, it wouldn't have lost itself as it has recently.

ASIC promotes HEAVY centralization tho ... huge farms and so called cloud hashing  Roll Eyes

In my opinion mining should at ALL times be possible on (cpus, gpus, fpgas and asics).

How to achieve that?

Multi algo and THE WILL to adjust these algos as needed to preserve the corresponding hardware.

regarding botnets and cpu algo: limit it to mine for 24h only by asking a captcha
(or better yet ~20h to vary the time even more)

captcha isn't a long term solution to identifying humans and robots. http://singularityhub.com/2012/08/28/artificial-intelligence-will-defeat-captcha-how-will-we-prove-were-human-then/

Changing algos might work to reduce the likelihood of building ASICs but that's a human decision making process and subject to either bad decisions or pre-meditated decisions that offer massive payoffs to those that know it's coming.

ASICs are inevitable if a token is successful and valuable.

Nice to see the project is still alive and progressing well with the dev team. How are you getting funds for the coin? How many devs working on? I would like to do something for the coin. I'm very much interested after noticing the long standing development and involvement the coin has got.

Fucker of "the system"
asic resistant algo, Neoscrypt. However no need to advise the devs, they way smarter us and know exactly what they are doing. Decred is in safe hands.

if feathercoin got to 5 dollars a coin a neoscrypt asic would be on the market tomorrow
